BUSINESS:
ANNUAL REPORT
Gentlemen,
Your Committee has much pleasure in placing before you for your consideration and approval the Annual Report and Financial Statement of your Club for the year ending, 30th June, 1958.
In it you will find a detailed list of performances of each team, together with individual averages, also a few personnel pars about players and the activities of the Club during the season.
This season was another good season with a minimum of playing time lost through wet weather. Some very good performances were recorded with members of the Club winning three Association averages and having twelve players listed in the Association averages.
The Club entered four teams in the competition comprising sixty-one players, i.e., A. grade (14 players) B3 grade (15 players) C grade (16 players) Saturday Morning Juniors, (16 players).
The A grade team, after leading the competition at the end of the first round, failed badly in the second round, winning only one match. They finished second last in the competition with forty-nine points. This failure is attributed to the injury of P. Newman and to some players being unavailable for certain matches.
Congratulations to Westmead Colts on winning their first competition.
MOST CATCHES: P. Newman, D. Parker and F. Booth
FIELDING TROPHY: G. Gallard.
This team carried the honours of the Club by finishing an unlucky second in the competition and only for some bad fielding lapses at critical stages in some matches they could have won the competition.
Congratulations to Merrylands on winning the comp.
MOST CATCHES: J. Hicks and A. White - 12.
FIELDING TROPHY: J. Cameron.
This team again had a very enjoyable season finishing 4th in the competition and I feel sure that with some better batting performances (as the averages will show) they would have; finished much closer to the winners in points scored.
This team is helping the Club immensely by giving our young players competition experience before they come to our higher grades.
Congrats. to Westmead Central on winning the competition.
MOST. CATCHES: R. Hutchison.
FIELDING AWARD: B. Bowyer.
This team performed creditably to finish 5th in the competition and judging from some of the averages the Club will have some worthy players in the near future. In fact the Club is now receiving the benefit of sponsoring this junior team when we observe the C grade averages and see that the two top bowling averages were obtained. by our ex-juniors. Special thanks must go to Max Gilham for his effort in looking after these boys.
Congratulations to Rangers 1 on winning the competition.
At the Annual General Meeting of the Junior Association, D. Blundell was again elected as a Vice-President of the Association and G. Horwood and F. Horwood were elected to the Executive Committee; also G. Horwood was elected to the wet weather Committee.
The Association again entered a team in the Martin Shield Competition.. W. Anderson, G. Horwood and D. Blundell were selected to represent the Association. W. Anderson captained the team while D. Blundell acted as manager. These players performed well, their averages being: W. Anderson batting average of 24, G. Horwood batting average of 18, D. Blundell bowling average of 5.9 for 11 wickets.
Congratulations to Kevin Gilham on his being selected to play in the C. S. Watson Shield Team.
As mentioned before, players from this Club won three Association averages, i.e., P. Newman winning A grade batting average which was a fine performance considering he was partly incapacitated with an injury to his leg.
B. Ross won the B3 grade batting average, a fine performance, and B. Cleasby won the B3 grade batting aggregate. Congratulations to these three players. Special mention about W. Anderson for scoring 606 runs only 16 runs behind best aggregate, but he had six innings less than the winner. Also to D. Blundell on finishing second in A grade bowling averages.
On behalf of the Club I offer congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. A. White, Mr. & Mrs. B. Cleasby: Mr. & Mrs. J. Hicks and Mr. & Mrs. G. Hunter on their becoming proud parents. It looks to me as though these B grade boys have had their heads together.
The Club held their usual. Social and Dance as a wind up to the end of 1957-58 season, and a. good time was had by ail those who attended. The spirit of good fellowship which exists among the players during the season is exemplified by the friendly atmosphere at the Dance, and the function is fast becoming known among other Clubs in the Association.
The thanks of the Club are extended to Mr. J. Thompson, our President, for acting as Master of Ceremonies, and the capable manner in which he performed these duties. John, as we know him, is without a doubt our keenest supporter and a tower of strength to the Club. The Club is indebted to John for having the Annual Reports printed.
I, personally, wish to thank him for assistance in having all the A grade averages completed at the end of the season, which saved me hours of time.
Thanks to Councillors E. Horwood and A. Whaling for their attendance at our Dance and making presentations to the recipients of the following trophies;-
A Grade Fielding Trophy - G. Gallard
Presentations to Mrs. Franklin, Miss E. McDougall, Mrs. Gilham, Mrs. White and Mrs. Russell for scoring and serving of afternoon tea.
A special presentation of an engraved watch was made by Mr. J. Thompson, on behalf of all Club members, to Mr. D. Blundell on his completion of 25 years membership with the Club, also Doug had the honour bestowed upon him of becoming the first honorary life member of the Club.
Many thanks to the persons who looked after the Score books and worked out all averages before delivering the books to me. One only has to try and work out averages to appreciate the assistance this was to me in compiling the averages to be sent to the Association Secretary.
A special mention must be made about our Treasurer, Frank Horwood. Frank does more for our Club than most members realize and if it was not for his generosity and interest in the Club, our Balance Sheet would be in a very bad way; by that I mean he saves the Club much money by the purchase of new equipment and repairs to the old equipment. While our financial position is not good, I think Frank, most capable as he is, will think of some new ways to improve our finances. The way in which our Financial Statement has been presented is .a credit to him, and while we have Frank as Treasurer our financial position will improve during the next season. Keep up the good work Frank.
I wish to convey my personal thanks to all persons responsible for making the presentation of the watch to me and conferring honorary life membership of the Club on me. I will treasure the watch for all time.
I hereby take this opportunity to thank my fellow office-bearers for their assistance in helping me to carry out my duties. I also wish to thank all executives of the Club, Club members, their wives and friends for their continued support of the Club and the Club's social functions.
D. BLUNDELL
You will note from the Financial Statement that our finances have deteriorated during the past year from a balance of £29/1/9 to 3/6. This is the second year in succession that expenditure has exceeded receipts. The deficit can be attributed principally to lack of support of our Annual Dance and cost of trophies. In future we shall either have to increase our Club fees or budget for a profit at the Dance and impose a special levy for the trophies if we continue to present them.
I take this opportunity to bring to your notice the able way in which your President and Secretary have guided the Club during the past twelve months. I consider it an honour to be a member as well as Treasurer of the best Club in the district.
I thank you for your confidence in me and trust you will give earnest consideration to my earlier remarks.
F. HORWOOD
The season 1957-1958 will, in my opinion, prove to be a milestone which will long be remembered in the Club.
As well as the joys of the season we suffered the necessary adversities and these I feel have given us a maturity which does not necessarily follow from longevity.
The Club is growing numerically whilst retaining the good fellowship which has always been to us the most important thing in cricket.
Indications are that we will have even more players trying out with us this season and I feel that we shall need to .have even more intense practice sessions to enable the grading committee to intelligently select the various teams.
I feel it would be regrettable if the selection resulted in anybody feeling that they had been either dropped or promoted: this is a new season, at time of writing we have neither an A, B, or C grade team. What we do have is a number of players available to play in whichever team they are chosen for in the best interests of the Club and I ask each of you to accept your grading in this spirit.
Some thought must be given to our financial position which is so perilous as to not permit any further deterioration. The present position, of course, has been largely brought about by our being no longer allowed to hire out our equipment for Sunday games on our ground.
On a personal level I have had my usual happy season; with an excellent crowd of fellows, and their ladies, from among whom you elected a hard working Secretary and Treasurer a President's lot could not be otherwise.
To paraphrase Churchill, "Come then let us onto our toes" for great things lie before us.
John Thompson.
