2002/2003 Report - Under 10 Blue

From the eleven games this season the boys were able to muster two wins, however this result does not reflect the true manner in which the boys started the season as individuals, and finished as a team. Whilst winning was not considered the most important objective for the team throughout the season, the boys learnt the most important issue when it comes to sport, and that is playing with a positive attitude, and being part of a team.

A number of times during the season, the boys were unlucky not to record wins, however most weeks they were let down by a lack of players, with most games only being played with 10 out of 13 players. When playing full strength teams in the modified game, the team with a lack of numbers is heavily penalized. I would therefore register my disappointment in parents who commit their sons to playing a team sport at the start of the season, to then have them withdraw before the season is not half way over to pursue other activities, or because they have lost interest. This surely is not a good example to set for young boys in allowing them to understand the true meaning of what it means to belong to a team. However to the ten boys who regularly attended cricket, and to their parents who ensured they attended training and were punctual on Saturday mornings, my warmest thanks.

My congratulations to the award winners this season, and to those who missed out, you remain in my mind all true champions.

I would also like to extend my thanks to the parents who helped out with the boys during the season. In particular I would like to thank Doug Conceicao and Greg Veldsman for their tireless scoring throughout the season, and to Nella Pillay and Umbi Vettivelly, who offered their help when we were short handed.

THE TEAM

Martyn Bailey: Every team needs a living legend. In the Australian Team, Steve Waugh takes this mantle, in the Under Ten Blues, Martyn fits this bill to a tee. He is an extremely talented cricketer, who as the averages shows, is most competent, batting, bowling or fielding. And when called upon Martyn was more than capable wicket keeping. I am sure, with some further coaching (and deletion of the Dennis Lillee three-mile run-up) Martyn will prove to be a successful opening bowler. In the game against Norwest, Martyn returned the best bowling results for the team for the year with 5 wickets for 3 runs, three of the wickets falling in the first over of the game. Congratulations Martyn on winning this years batting trophy with 108 runs at an average of 13.50 runs. It is also hard having the same first and second name as the coach, the number of times I would hear "for good sake Martyn James behave", I would turn around, expecting to see my mother at the ground, only to realize it was Bernadette Bailey pulling the "living legend" back into line.

Daniel Carey: Last year Daniel showed signs of becoming a more than useful bowler. This year, Daniel's batting was leaps and bounds ahead of his achievements for last season, finishing third on the overall aggregate with 71 runs for an average of 8.88 (and 5 not outs). Daniel, listen to your old dad, if only you stop stepping away to the leg side and hitting, you will not lose your wicket as frequently as you did this year. However, on the flip side when he did make connection, the ball most likely went for four runs. Daniel with his high bowling action, was the only bowler in the team who could bowler a good "bouncer". Unfortunately for him, these balls either passed over the head of the batsman and called a no ball, or "clocked" them on the helmet. Daniel finished the year with five wickets, but was unlucky not to bag a lot more. Well done mate, I was again extremely proud of your results!

Dylan Conceicao: Playing cricket for the first time this season, Dylan's enthusiasm was for me the highlight of his season. Whilst the runs did not flow freely when he batted, Dylan proved an extremely difficult customer to dismiss, finishing the year with 59 runs for an average of 7.38 with 5 not outs. At the start of the season Dylan had never bowled, yet he persevered throughout the season finishing with 4 wickets. Another highlight of the year, and a strong example of his enthusiasm and character, occurred in Round Two, when fielding at mid wicket Dylan attempted to catch a pull shot hit off the middle of the bat. The ball crashed through his hands and clocked him on the head. Dylan's first reaction was to get to his feet and retrieve the ball, before giving the 'melon" shaped bump of his forehead a rub. I hope that Dylan continues with his cricket, as I am sure his batting and bowling will improve as he matures.

Pumina Liyanagama: Always looked stylish with his sunglasses when fielding, Pumina proved himself to be a competent batsman, with a "cast iron" defence, which demonstrated to me he understands the basic technique of batting, that being head directly over the ball and play with a straight bat. It is refreshing to see a young boy more intent of protecting his wicket than trying to hit the cover off the ball. Pumina also showed his aptitude to wicket keeping when given the opportunity, and when called on to bowl, he could be counted to bowling handy left arm slow balls. Like Dylan, Pumina will no doubt improve his game over the next few seasons.

Mahela Navaratne: One of the pleasures in coaching a team of boys involved in their first or second year of competitive cricket, is to see the individual change in a player's abilities and skills over the life of the season. Of all the players in the team, the difference in Mahela's skills from the start to the finish of the season was nothing short of remarkable. In particular, I was most impressed with Mahela's improvement with his bowling. Whilst his averages do not truly reflect the year he had, I am sure given more opportunities and coaching, Mahela will turn into a more than useful allrounder. Well played Mahela! Keep up the practice with your dad during winter, and I hope I see you next year.

Kirveshin Pillay: With the right aptitude, Kirveshin will mature into a true all rounder, capable of opening either the batting or bowling. Throughout the year Kirveshin was called upon to open the batting, and by the finish on his eighteen balls, in most instances would have cleanly struck two or three fours, and got the team off to a great start. Kirveshin however needs to learn to hit and leave the right balls. As a bowler, Kirveshin, with a technically correct action will improve as he matures, and will be rewarded with a lot of wickets. His fielding also has improved in leaps and bounds, on two occasions this season he was successful in running out batsman with direct throws, twenty metres from the stumps. One last piece of advice Kirveshin, forget about being a spin bowler, you future lies with "terrorizing" batsman as an opening or first change bowler.

Jarred Taylor: Was the surprise package for the year, finishing with the bowling award with 8 wickets at an average of 9.50. During training prior to the commencement of the season, Jarred had problems bowling with a straight arm, and keeping the ball on the wicket. By the time the first game commenced, Jarred had mastered his action, and was awarded with a wicket in the first over he bowled. With minimal effort and a "whippy" bowling action, Jarred was able to bowl with good pace, with his best bowling results against Seven Hills when he took 3 wickets for 8 runs, narrowly missing out on a hat trick. In the field Jarred showed a safe pair of hands with two catches, while he could prove a dangerous hitter when given the opportunity with the bat. Congratulations Jarred, you should be proud of your achievements this year!

Don Udagahapaththuwa: One of the younger players in the team, Don was a pleasure to coach, always willing to listen to advice when given. As a bowler, with more practice, he will no doubt secure plenty of wickets with his left arm medium pacers, while his batting, he achieved mixed success, finishing with an aggregate of 47 runs. Another player also willing to try his hand at keeping, Don proved gallant when given the opportunity of getting behind the stumps. Keep up the practice Don, I am sure hard work will be rewarded with more runs and wickets.

Stanley Veldsman: Whilst his results this year might not reflect it, Stanley has the makings of a very good cricketer. He possesses one of the most fluent bowling actions, and with perseverance, will become a very good medium pace bowler. Batting, Stanley needs to stem his enthusiasm for lifting his head and attempting to hit every ball for four. When needed to bat with caution this year, Stanley showed me he has both the temperament and ability to become a good batsman. My highlight for the year with Stanley was the opening partnership he formed with Nealan. On two or three occasions when they opened, they both run with authority, placing the team in a strong position when they had finished their eighteen balls. Another player with the ability to knock the stumps down from a long distance, Stanley was instrumental in running out three batsmen this year, making him a worthy winner of the fielding award. Listen to your father Stanley, when he is giving you advice on your cricket! If you do, I am sure you will have more success with both bat and ball.

Nealan Vettivelly: Another player who was a pleasure to coach, Nealan had success with both bat and ball this year, finishing with 64 runs for an average of 12.80 (6 not outs) and 6 wickets for an average of 24.67. He made a formable opening partnership with Stanley, his running between wickets was impeccable. With more coaching in years to come, his batting and bowling will improve immensely. In the field, Nealan also showed good ability, taking a "classic catch" at square leg. Congratulations Nealan for your allround performances during the year, you are a worthy winner of my Coaches Encouragement Award.

THE SUPPORTERS

The Ten Blues had the pleasure of possessing two of the most parochial supporters in the competition, Bernadette Bailey and Jacki Taylor. Week in and week out, whether at training seasons or at the game, Bernadette and Jacki showed their true colours with their vocal barracking. Whether a boy hit 30 runs or was out five times during his time at the crease, the cheer squad always made the boys feel special when they returned from the crease.

Thanks ladies, you certainly added colour to the team with your vocal support, and my deep- hearted thanks for the fantastic beer stein you organized for me at the end of the season. I will treasure it and remember with fondness your support for the team when I partake of a refreshing ale!
