2002/2003 Report - Under 11/2

Although some of the U11/2's had not played cricket before, they learnt a lot about the game during the season, and judging by their enthusiasm in the field, enjoyed themselves too.

We got away to an encouraging start, winning two of our first three matches, and showed character to finish with a flourish in winning two of our last three matches, despite a frustrating run in between which cost us a top four finish.

This team had an unusually even spread of talent. Everyone got some runs, took some wickets, and fielded competently which enhanced the spirit in the team, and discernible progress was made by all players in all areas of the game.

Aleem accumulated the most runs with 84, and the stand out batting performances were Kieran's 35 and a partnership with James of 71 in our first win against Hills Barbarians, and Patrick's 27 not out and a 58 run partnership with Robert to see us to victory against them a second time.

Matthew was our most consistent bowler collecting 15 wickets, while Kieran and Mason both came close to hat-tricks, taking three wickets in memorable overs against Hills and Norwest. Mason also had our safest pair of hands, holding eleven catches.

Congratulations to all players, and thanks to all parents for their support - especially to Neil Chesher who willingly umpired in every match.

THE TEAM

Matthew Barbeau: Matthew (our leading wicket taker for the season) developed into one of the best opening bowlers in the competition able to produce a very good outswinger with both the new and old ball. Matthew is very keen in the field with a strong throwing arm. Batting needs a little of work but should be capable of getting a high score in the middle order.

Dayne Byrne: Dayne played most of the season as opening bat and as time goes on seems to be suited for this position with the amount of patience so far displayed. It is a tough position to start off in but runs will come as his strength develops. Dayne has very good pair of hands taking all catches coming to him. Needs to work a little more on his bowling.

Michael Chesher: Michael seemed to be the silent achiever this season performing well in all aspects of the game. Batted very soundly and should develop into an opening batsman as his confidence grows. Took some great catches in second slip. Bowling improved greatly as the season progressed.

Paul Costi: Started the season bowling medium pace but ended the season bowling a very classy off-spinner and this will only improve with practice. Paul is a very good fielder in almost any position. Paul is also a very handy batsman and once he develops some offside shots into his repertoire, should and will score more runs.

Patrick Daniel: Patrick opened the batting for most of the season and showed that he could be a very capable batsman playing shots on both sides of the wicket. Lost concentration when fielding but this should change next season. Another bowler who tries to bowl too fast, but can bowl a good line when he slows down a little. Patrick was our most economical bowler this season.

Mason Hemmings: Mason was our secret weapon in the bowling department by being able to break any opposition partnership once it started to establish itself. As far as fielding went Mason caught ever ball that came near him as shown by his 11 catches. As the season progressed his batting improved and he should develop into a hard-hitting middle order batsman.

Kieran Houlahan: Very handy fast bowler but at times tried to bowl too fast. Kieren is very fast in the outfield and is capable of taking some classic catches. At times Kieren displayed real talent with the bat but must realise patience, as the longer you remain at the crease the more runs you will score.

Aleem Khan: Aleem was our leading run scorer and is a very capable batsman who should develop into a very steady top order batsman, again needs to learn patience and runs will come. Nice pair of hands which prove to be very safe in the field. Bowling was a little bit upset this season as a bowling action change was implemented which will benefit him in the long run.

Christian Reeks: A real trier, gave 110% in the field never giving up the chase. Unfortunately unable to attend training but with a little more effort and some pre-game training should start to improve in both batting and bowling.

Toby Shaw: Joined the team after a few games had been played and developed into a promising cricketer. A very steady left arm bowler whose ability improved greatly as the season went on. As Toby's confidence improved so did his batting, should develop into a very handy middle order batsman. Fielding was very solid all season.

Robert Slater: Never met anybody with so much passion for cricket, gives everything in all aspects of the game. Both batting and bowling are very solid and will only improve with more self-confidence. A very handy bowler and a capable batsman. Performed reasonably well as wicket keeper. A good thinker about the game and will make a very good captain as he matures.

James Wilkins: Another player who performed well with both bat and ball. Likes to hit the ball hard, which is fine but would be better on the ground. Bowling improved as the season as the season progressed, as shown when on several times James was on a hat-trick. Looked like a very promising wicket keeper and with more practice may develop into one.
