2002/2003 Report - Under 13/1

After the disappointment of finishing runners up the previous year, we were hoping for a better finish in 2002/03. Late withdrawals at the start of the season in Division 2 saw our team with the bare 11 players. This had us on the back foot from the start. Ashleigh Endacott was appointed captain for the season. We finished the minor rounds in 2nd place with 7 wins, 1 draw, 1 tie and 3 losses.

SEMI-FINAL

We played Kings Langley, last year's premiers and a team which had beaten us twice in the minor rounds. Ashleigh won the toss and batted. We started brilliantly to be 3/180 off 30 overs. The loss of several wickets saw our run rate drop but we batted out 57 overs to be 8/234. Kings Langley started well but lost 4 quick wickets to slump to 4/29. From then on it was just a matter of time and they were all out for 105. Best with the bat was James Frank, 89 and Max Pobihuszka, 48. The bowling saw 5 bowlers take 2 wickets each.

FINAL

This was against minor premiers, Norwest. We had won one match each at the end of the minor rounds. Norwest won the toss and batted. Steady bowling kept the run rate down but it took until the 17th over to get our first wicket. From then on they came regularly until Norwest were all out for 98 in the 56th over. Our stars with the ball were Mail Scholz, 4/9, Tanveer Josan, 3/10 and Tom Gurka, 2/16 (the first 2 wickets).

Thanks to Luke Dempsey (2 catches) for sub fielding in the final. The next day it was our turn to bat. We were quickly in trouble at 4/16 with semi final heroes James and Max out for 8 and 0 respectively. This left Ashleigh and Tom Gurka at the crease. They battled hard to take the score to 63 before Ashleigh was out for 24. Tom Warland and Tom Gurka then took the score to 76 before Tom Warland was the sixth wicket to fall. Tim Littlejohns then joined Tom Gurka and together they took us to 6/100 and victory! Best with the bat were Tom Gurka 36 no, Ashleigh Endacott 24 and Tim Littlejohns 12 no.

The team showed a lot of character throughout the season to overcome lack of numbers, injuries and representative commitments and become a great team during the finals. I was proud to be their coach.

THE TEAM

Ryan Buckland: Converted to off spin bowling during the winter months. The hours of hard work paid off with him finishing the season with 16 wickets (2nd in team) at 6.69 (1st in team). His batting with limited opportunities continued to improve. Top year in the fielding compartment.

Ashleigh Endacott: Took over the captaincy this year and after a settling in period showed outstanding leadership. Finished the season with 334 runs (2nd in team) at 47.71 (1st in team). Bowled well throughout the season for 11 wickets at 15.82. Outstanding in the field and wicket keeping with 8 catches and 1 stumping. Member of Parramatta U13 rep team (semi-finalists) being leading wicket taker (10 at 9.5) and batting average 20 (HS 45). A member of NSW U15 girls state side that won the Australian Championship.

James Frank: Outstanding year with the bat making 415 runs (1st in team) at 37.73 (2nd in team). Great year with the gloves taking 10 catches and 2 stumpings. Steady medium pace bowler. Member Parramatta U13 rep team with batting average 28 (HS 85). Selected to try out for NSW U14 Emerging Blues.

Tom Gurka: Fine all rounder with 203 runs (HS 45) at 29 and 14 wickets at 13.71. Outstanding in all areas of fielding. Captained Parramatta U12 rep team, which just missed the semi-finals, batting average 55.6 (HS 64n.o.) and 8 wickets at 11.6. Selected in NSW U13 Emerging Blues Team. Grand final hero.

Tanveer Josan: New to the side this year and will develop into a fine all rounder with work in the off-season. Finished the season with 9 wickets at 20.33 and batting average 12.8. He was sensational in the field taking 10 catches and winning the fielding award.

Tim Littlejohns: Finally got back to his best bowling in the final taking 1/4 off 5 overs. His batting reached maturity this season with an average of 9.7 (HS 22) and a great 12 no in the grand final. Fielding was good.

Alex Mihalyka: Came of age this year opening the batting scoring 173 runs (HS 35) at 14.42. Kept under raps with the ball to concentrate on his batting. Again outstanding in the field. Parramatta U12 rep player scoring 83 runs at 16.6. Selected to try out for NSW U13 Emerging Blues.

Luke Palmer: Continued to improve his leg spin bowling culminating in 2/21 in the semi-final. His batting showed a lot of improvement. His fielding also continued this upward trend. Most pleasing aspect of his season was the belief he is now showing in himself. This will be the turning point in his career.

Max Pobihuszka: One of the fastest bowlers in NSW for his age. Finished the season with 19 wickets (1st in team) at 9.63 after missing 4 matches through injury and playing the majority of the others on one leg. Hard-hitting batsman who scored 217 runs (HS 79) at 31. Good fieldsman. Parramatta U13 rep player (semi-finalists) with batting average 44 (HS 61) and bowling 10 wickets at 11. Selected in NSW U14 Emerging Blues Team.

Matt Scholz: New to the team this year but came to the club with a vast amount of experience. Batted exceptionally well throughout the year for 244 runs (HS 82) at 34.86. Outstanding leg spin bowler who showed his true ability in the finals with 6/36 off 20 overs. Good fieldsman. Parramatta U13 rep captain (semi-finalists) and an outstanding talent. Selected to try out for NSW U14 Emerging Blues.

Tom Warland: Started bowling chinamen deliveries with great effect. Took 7 wickets at 13. Batting levelled off but played some fine supporting roles throughout the season. Good fieldsman.

Thanks to all the parents for their help throughout the season including the trivia night, Robin Druitt for scoring and Joe Gurka for managing and statistics. Joe, Doug, Chris and Louie for assistance with umpiring. John and Julie Pobihuszka for feeding me throughout the season and all the other mums for the numerous cups of coffee, biscuits and buns. Finally special thanks to all the players who made giant steps toward adulthood in the way they overcame the season's obstacles to go on and be the premiers. You should all be extremely proud of yourselves. See you all next season.
