2002/2003 Report - Under 14/2

The 2002-2003 season started full of promise winning 2 out of the first 3 games and narrowly losing the other match. Unfortunately it was down hill from there and we failed to win another match. This could be partly attributed to the team not giving 100% at training. If you do not work on your weaknesses and try and increase your skill level at training you can not expect to improve and win matches. The other significant problem was the unbelievably high number of dropped catches. It is going to be difficult to win when the bowlers need to take the equivalent of 15 wickets each innings because of poor fielding. This aside I think every player enjoyed their season and I hope we will see you all back next year.

Finally on behalf of all the players and parents I would like to thank Terry for his time and commitment put into coaching the team and umpiring every Saturday. Without this there would be no team. I would like to also thank Chris Meakins for scoring, Craig Jones for umpiring and Sharon Whittaker for supplying morning tea which helps makes some very long Saturday mornings pass easier.

Highlights for the year: Reece Jones 65 vs Norwest; Tim Carter with 3 catches in an innings at mid off; Keith Meakins 4-19 vs Pendle Hill; and ... the team table winning the trivia night for the second year in a row.

THE TEAM

Joseph Caristo: Joseph came to the team as a replacement for the last 8 games. Joseph happily stepped into the opening batsman role and developed well throughout the season. He is a reliable fieldsman.

Michael Carter: Michael continued to improve as the year progressed. Michael has a very solid defence with the bat and this will help him score many runs in the future.

Tim Carter: Tim gave 100% to all areas of cricket. As bowler he ran in hard all day and tried to bowl as fast as possible no matter how hot the day. As a batsman, Tim hit the ball as hard as anyone. No bowler was going to intimidate him. With a little more patience he will become a class player.

Ben James: Ben made a great improvement from last season in both his batting and bowling. He had two good innings of over 40 runs in the last 3 matches. Ben's bowling is both fast and accurate and should see him take plenty of wickets again next season.

Bryce Jones: Bryce had a good season with the bat and features in several good partnerships which helped the team avert a total batting disaster. Bryce's bowling continued to improve as the season progressed. A reliable fieldsman who never lets the bowlers down.

Reece Jones: Reece had a great season with the bat with only 2 scores of less than 10. He played a terrific innings of 65 against Norwest. While Reece's bowling was accurate and economical, unfortunately some of his ability to take wickets was not the same as past seasons. His slower ball is not the weapon he would like it to be.

Lakshey Kumar: Lakshey at times could be one of the fastest bowlers in the competition. He was often let down by the fieldsman. Lakshey always gave 100% and happily filled any role the coach asked of him making him one of the contenders for the coach's award.

Lokesh Kumar: Lokesh was one of our opening batsmen. He has a solid technique which saw him as an obstacle to many a bowler. Lokesh's spin bowling continued to develop as the season progressed. He will take plenty of wickets next season. Another contender for the coach's award.

Reece Latter: Reece hit the winning runs in both matches the team won. His batting continued to improve throughout the season. Reece was a surprise packet in the wicket keeping stakes and was starting to develop well in this area.

Keith Meakins: After a good season last year Keith struggled this year with the bat. As the team's wicket keeper and many long days in the field, Keith had a tough time behind the stumps. Keith's bowling (when given a break from keeping) continued to improve and in the last match finished with 4-19 off ten overs.

Mathew Murphy: After playing the first 4 games Mat had to miss the rest of the season. Mat showed promise as a wicket keeper and was developing into a reliable opening batsman.

Simon Ruxton: Started the season with several good scores, but a bit of a slump followed. He featured in a good partnership with Ben in both the matches the team won.

Kate Whittaker: Kate's batting improved as the season progress. Kate had several great partnerships with Bryce including one against Guildford that saved the follow on. Kate's bowling continued to bamboozle the opposition, but bad luck saw her not take the wickets she deserved. Kate won the fielding award and would always chase hard and back up.
