2002/2003 Report - Under 15/1

The season 2002/2003 would have to go down as a bit of a disappointment due to the fact we won only one game and finished up bringing in the rear. However, I feel the boys performed above what the stats suggest. I was once again pleased to see the individual improvements by each player, but as a team sport winning games is the priority and premierships the goal. I feel it fair to say the boys were in with a chance in pretty well all their matches however we seemed to either let our opposition back in or failed to take the chance when offered to take the game away. The innings, bowling spell, or catch that you need to win, only come along in small sections of the game, and if you are not focused as a team or as individuals these opportunities will pass you by. Focus in cricket starts on the training track during the week, and continues on Saturday in warm up, so when you hit the paddock you are truly ready to go. As much as coaches and managers try, it eventually comes down to how much players want to focus and how much they want to succeed, both individually and as a team.

Once again a massive thank you to all the people who helped through the year, in particular Colin Jones for getting us where we needed to be every week, and Michael and Sarath for scoring, and those who came along to support the boys.

THE TEAM

James Chatman: As always, a tireless worker in the field. Opened the batting on several occasions, including his top score of 35. His bowling improved this year but he found the wickets hard to come by.

Jeremy Daniel: Opened the batting and showed determination to see off the quick bowlers. Didn't make a lot of runs but never surrendered his wicket easily. Fielded well in the covers, taking four catches.

Chris Jones: Worked very hard to improve his keeping. Needs to talk to his fielders more to direct play. Unfortunately his batting slipped, as it didn't get the effort his keeping did. Took out the team Fielding Award. Well done.

Keith Morrison: Showed more confidence in his batting, and with just a little patience scored some badly needed runs in the lower order. He led the way with his bowling taking 14 wickets in some good fiery spells and took out the team Bowling Award. If he can improve his consistency to keep the pressure on the batsmen the wickets will come more often.

Eddie Nield: Significantly improved his fielding this year taking some great catches, and saving quite a few runs. Found it hard to score runs against the bigger fast opposition bowlers.

Maxim Perera: A sometimes reluctant captain, he didn't have a lot of support from his teammates. His batting looked good but often didn't carry on to make runs. A good top score of 52 against Kings Langley was unfortunately too rare an occurrence. He struggled with his bowling rhythm for much of the year. Hopefully next season will see him back to his usual high standards.

Nath Rankothge: Suffered from some questionable umpiring decisions, which affected his confidence. Had more success with his batting in the seniors. Bowled some mixed spells of quick spin. Needs to practice more if he is to achieve consistency at a match.

Sonny Saini: His first year with the club and he struggled with the standard of the opposition bowlers. Tried hard in the field but missed a few games with injuries.

Simon Smith: Another who looked good with the bat but often failed to convert his time in the middle into a high score. Our second highest wicket taker, he bowled well in spells. Improved consistency to keep the pressure on the batsmen will see more success from the good ball.

Rameez Ullah: A fine young batsman, top scored with a century against Wenty Leagues. He took a wicket with his first over for the team, and often followed it up as a good change bowler. Like the others he needs to reduce the number of loose deliveries.

Eddie Wojtun: Missed the early part of the season due to a footy injury, but on his return quickly became our most consistent batsman scoring four fifties, in just seven innings. Took out the team Batting Award. His bowling wasn't as dangerous this season due to his hand injury but he was getting his swing back by the end of the season.

Gary Yiannake: Improved his batting this year but needs to take his net form into the match. Worked hard in the field saving runs in the gully.
