First year of coaching and unsure of what was expected from myself, the players and the parents. What I would like to say is a big thank you to Graeme, in the role of team manager ensuring I did manage to concentrate on the coaching aspects of the job, Anne Denlow for canteen and scoring duties. Also a big thank you to Hilton, Doug and Rick for attending most of the sessions (at the ground and not across the road) and all the games. Thanks to Rod and Janice Farlow in having a BBQ and supplying a pool for everyone to enjoy! Pop for his insights into the game, all enjoyed and taking on board. Finally special thanks to the opposing coach and fellow clubman Peter for all the support and cricket gear (I'll return it some day). Taking over a team in their final year together was always going to be interesting (to say the least) from what I'd heard they are all talented and by far the most promising side in the comp. This statement was to be proven correct as the year went on, the side only got stronger. Early in the season we faced our first and only defeat in the regular season by Kings Langley who I ranked as the only side to really trouble us through out the year. Throughout the year the boys proved that not only could they play excellent cricket but could play the odd joke as well. Enjoying a day out to Penrith Whitewater Rafting ensured a bit of team spirit. Overall consistency of the side was good with some exceptional individual play. Gavin with his 100 against Kings Langley in even time, Josh's bowling and fielding throughout the year remained of a high level, exceptional was his hat trick against Kings Langley, Jarrod's 97 against Baulko 1B's. At some stage throughout the year all 12 guys put up their hand and performed very well. In the end, an off day against an average team in the semi final proved to be our downfall leaving us third in the final rankings. Not what I or anyone in the team wanted or expected, but that's the game of cricket. Below is a summary on each of the players good and bad!!!! Including their best performance with bat and ball. THE TEAM Gavin Cowan: Led by example on the field, steady season with the bat and ball by his own standards. 104 no and 5/1 off seven overs. So afraid of training made an excuse about playing something called S.G Ball!!! John Procajlo: Made vice captain after the other one went AWOL (James!!). Grew into the role and displayed confidence with the bat, averaging in the high 30's got plenty of starts and has the ability to turn them into big scores in the future. 76 runs and 3/18. Doesn't believe in being caught especially when bulleted by the coach. Josh Stafford: Should have taken a lot more wickets for the year but the batsmen weren't good enough to hit the ball. Probably the best fielder in the club in both juniors and seniors (besides me of course)?? Staffy, captain for a game, comes out to bat and given the instructions by the coach to take his time - straight away caught - hits one in the air to backward square (off a no ball). I don't think I managed to show him what a block shot was. 40 runs and 4/30. Jarred Farlow: Unfortunate not to have scored a 100 in juniors this year, but sure there is plenty to come. Bowled well throughout the year. 97 and 6/18. Jarred I don't think you chuck hand over the cash. James Wojtun: Skilled with the gloves and knows how to hit the ball, dragged himself out of his deathbed to play a wonderful innings against Norwest whilst sick. Show all the guys how to do it tough. Unlucky not to have scored more runs. 64 runs and 1/6. Now were do I start how Gavin let you have a bowl is beyond me and to get a wicket, my God. The socialiser, surfer, travel and "I'm up to no good" guy of the team. A player ever team should have, just a coaches nightmare. Training ... what's that ... "I'm hurt so John can keep " 5 minutes later bowling??????? Matt Hardy: Technically one of the best bats in the side, when he is on song. Like most of the guys in the team bowls well when the opportunity arises and proved late in the season there are plenty of runs when he takes the time in the middle. 26 runs and 4/6. Trying to drown the coach is never a good option (whilst Whitewater Rafting Matt decides to have a go at drowning the coach). Jay Smith: Extremely good bowler on his day, with speeds of up to 118 kph is also very quick. Blasted a lot of the opposition out, not only with the ball. When he did spend some time in the middle, it was only a matter of time before the ball went sailing into orbit. 12 runs and 4/5. Patience might come in handy. Michael Procajlo: First year in the ones and proved he has a lot of talent with bat, ball and lip service. Very good bowler who will confuse a lot of batsmen in the future. Handy number ten who averages 36 and showed a lot of leadership qualities as the year progressed.10 and 4/36. Quote of the year - "Quick let's get him out as he's running late for Milo Cricket" - even the batsmen was laughing. Michael Delfino: Youngest in the team, has plenty of skill and managed to do the job of opening batsmen. Showed glimpses of his ability with a solid 50 against Norwest and could have scored a few more runs but will improve. 61 runs and 2/9. Maybe the youngest, but can talk better than the Information Minister for Iraq... David Byrne: Potentially a very good allrounder, showed good skills with bat and ball and has good hands in the field. Ability to bat much higher up the order if time is spent out in the middle. 31 runs and 2/18. Never short of an opinion. Cameron Child: Mr Laidback of the side, often showed the top order how it was done, and had the ability to bowl offies, leggies and medium pace whatever took his fancy on the day. 22 runs and 1/17. Cameron's opinion "whatever - I'm not fussed". Andrew Denlow: Started the season as Mr Consistent with the bat and managed a few break throughs with the ball. Has a lot of skill and is already performing well in the A's. 54 runs and 1/6. Nickname: Rowdy. On a serious note, thanks guys for the opportunity to coach and work with you. I hope you all go on to do well wherever you play and I hope you enjoyed the season. Cheers Nick,
Nick Connellan
