2002/2003 Report - Under 16/1B

This year we had a large change in players, with only 5 remaining from last year's team. It was new look team, with hopes of making the finals, as we appeared stronger than last year. But in the end we just missed, as we were not consistent enough. We defeated every team, except Baulko A, including a thrashing of the eventual premiers in the second last round. To finish 5th, just a few points from the finals and with the A's finishing a clear first, shows the depth in our club. Division One was quite even this year and we performed well.

THE TEAM

Brendan Byrne: Brendan was our opening batsman and was in his first year with the club. He started well, lost a bit of form and then returned to form after Christmas when he made his top score of 56. Did well to compile a season total of 177 runs at just under 18 in this division. He is strong square of the wicket and does not easily give his wicket away. Did not get much chance to bowl, but did get a wicket. Brendan's fielding was much better than Leeds' form this year. Highest score: 56, Best Bowling: 1/5, Catches: 4.

Andrew Wilkins: Another player in his first season with the club, Andrew opened the batting and was our wicket keeper. His early season batting was outstanding and although he did not get too many runs after Christmas, he still finished with 231 runs at just under 20. His wicket keeping was excellent, with a couple of smart stumpings. He is also a handy spin bowler and produced the Best Bowling performance for the team with his 5/32 on the turf wicket. Well done Andrew. Highest score: 75, Best Bowling: 5/31, Catches: 10 + 2 stumpings.

Ben Dooley: An amazing season from Ben, even better than last year. He was the outstanding batsman of the competition, making a total of 517 runs at an average of 51.7, with four (4) centuries along the way. A batsman with power and technique, he was never content to let the bowlers dominate and his runs were made at a strike rate of around 110. A persistent back problem restricted his bowling, but when fit was accurate and fast. A good fieldsman, with a safe pair of hands, he even played keeper a few times. Highest score: 112, Best Bowling: 2/18, Catches: 8.

Kendrick Khoo: Kendrick has now completed nine years of cricket with the club. He is still a most enthusiastic player, always willing to bat anywhere in the order, even at number 3 when others won't. His top score came against Baulko A, where he stayed around while wickets were tumbling. His leg spin bowling was not as accurate as Warnie, but has great potential and he bowls a good wrong'un. An excellent close in fielder, with sharp reflexes. Well done Kendrick and keep the growing taller please. Highest score: 13 no, Best Bowling: 1/5, Catches: 3.

Greg McLoughlin: Greg had a mixed season with the bat. He played some very good innings with his season high 39 only ended by a run out by the bowler. But at other times lost his wicket through a loss of concentration. After being our keeper last year, he bowled regularly this season and took 15 wickets with his medium pacers. He has a safe pair of hands and a strong arm. Also kept wickets a few times. Completed a busy season by playing every game in seniors, mostly in B6. Highest score: 39, Best Bowling: 3/17, Catches: 5.

Shane Ng: Shane, in his fourth season did it tough this year. But he showed his determination never to give his wicket away easily. He was always willing to bat wherever asked and always put in a top effort. His top score did not do him justice. He did not get many opportunities to bowl, but whenever he did, he always bowled a tidy spell and got three wickets. Shane's fielding has improved greatly over the last few years; he is good in the outfield and has a strong arm. Highest score: 9 no, Best Bowling: 1/2, Catches: 2.

Des Pillay: A left handed batsmen, Des showed what he was capable of with a swashbuckling innings of 43 off 18 balls in Round 2, when with Ben Dooley, he put on 84 in about 5 overs. Fell away in mid season, but returned to his best in the last game with a good innings. Scored his runs at a fast rate of just under 100. He is a left arm fast bowler, who can really cause problems when on the spot. Bowled best in the last few games, when he was fast and economical. Another good fielder, with safe hands. Congratulations on being selected to play Green Shield with Mosman this year. Highest Score: 43, Best Bowling: 2/14, Catches: 5.

William Cartwright: Will doubled his run total from last season, making 157 at just over 14, in an improved performance. Batting down the order, he was another who scored quickly, at a rate of just over 80. Played a couple of important innings, especially against Kellyville on the turf and Kings Langley in the last game of the season. His medium pace bowling was accurate and took 11 wickets this year. A quite achiever, who fielded well this year. Well played Will. Highest Score: 44, Best Bowling: 2/13, Catches: 5.

James Thomson: Another new player, James joined us this season after moving from NZ. Unfortunately, he started the season with a broken arm, which stopped him batting in the first two games. He batted in a number of positions from 1 to 11 and showed his potential with a great innings of 42 against Norwest. Technically looks very sound. James was our opening bowler, our top wicket taker with 20 wickets at just over 20 and bowled with great pace. His fielding was excellent. He has a strong arm and moves well in the field. An excellent first season for Baulko. Highest Score: 42, Best Bowling: 3/20, Catches: 3.

Ben Jennings: Ben was also in his first season with the club. He did not seem to rate himself much as a batsman, but showed his ability with some sound batting during a couple of good partnerships. Importantly stayed with Ben Dooley as he made a century in Round 11. Ben is a medium fast bowler and bowled quite well, taking 9 wickets and showed his versatility when he bowled both left arm and right arm. He is a sound fielder, with a strong arm. Good luck next year. Highest Score: 14, Best Bowling: 2/6, Catches: 4.

Lorenzo La Cava: Lorenzo returned after a season off and besides hating to get up early, he had a very good season. His batting showed he had an excellent eye and he made some scores in the 20's, without going on to get a big score. He was the victim of a couple of great catches, which cut short a couple of his innings. Didn't bowl a lot, but managed to nab a few wickets. He is very fast, has a safe pair of hands and was one of our best fieldsmen. Good luck with your music. Highest Score: 27, Best Bowling: 1/0, Catches: 5.

Vasanth Rajan: Vasanth joined us in Round 2, but was only able to play 3 games, before other commitments meant he was unable to play any more games. This was unfortunate, as he would have given us another option in the top three batting positions. Showed potential in the games he played and hopefully, we may see him back next year in seniors. Highest Score: 10 no, Best Bowling: 1/42 Catches: 1.

Thank you to Warwick Smedley, who played 4 games for us when we needed backup. Also thanks to Rameez Ullah and Chris Jones from U15/l's for filling in for us.

So that's it. After six years, 41 players, 725 innings, 7,292 runs, (@ 12.09), 12/50's, 7/100's, 367 catches, 5 stumpings, 2,999 overs, 413 maidens, 644 wickets (@ 14.32) and 19,419 balls bowled, junior cricket is finished and I can now sleep in on Saturday morning! Thank you to everyone who has helped over the six years, especially Darryl Smedley who was coach for five years, including our premiership in U14/2, when we were unbeaten. I have thoroughly enjoyed myself, learnt a lot about life and made some good friends along the way.

To our co-captains William Cartwright and Greg McLoughlin, thank you. You ensured the team played the game in the right spirit. Congratulations on a job well done. I hope to see many of these young men back next year playing seniors (I might even be there!).
