Fifth place, an outright loss and eight first innings losses from twelve games suggests a pretty tough week in week out season against superior opposition. While we struggled at times, there were many positive signs both for the team and for individual players. There were some bad losses early in the season but this was more to about how poorly we played in those matches than an overwhelming superiority on the part of the opposition. Best example of this is to compare how the team fared against the eventual grand final winners. We played Seven Hills RSL twice narrowly losing by only two wickets and 6 runs respectively. In terms of individual performances there was the batting of Ashley Dubberley, the bowling of Pramod Wijayapala, the all round contributions of Jared Mohr and the fielding of Sean Law. These boys and a number of others are sure to make their mark in the senior teams and perhaps move on to higher honours over the next few years. Several of the boys filled in for senior teams. Notwithstanding the importance of individual performances, cricket is a team game and there was no better feeling for the boys throughout the season then when the team won or played well. Lastly it is important to mention the help provided by Steve Henshaw (who surely had better things to do - as had we all) but turned up for every game and umpired, scored, packed the kit, served in the canteen, sold meat raffle tickets etc. Many thanks Steve, without your help I wouldn't have managed. THE TEAM Grant Carmichael: Right hand fast bowler who could be relied upon to do the hard work and open the bowling at the 'other' end. Highly competitive and never gave up. Always bowled four or five good balls an over including one or two that were unplayable. Just need to work on the other two. 15 wickets for the season and all of them well earned. Lively down the order batter and energetic fielder - a good team player. Jonathan Christy: Came into the team from Wenty Leagues. Stylish right hand bat who had some very close decisions go against him early in the season and really only got going towards the end. Jon picked up seven wickets from his medium pacers and was a safe catcher close to the bat. Keep working on your game, a big season is just around the corner and runs and wickets will come. Ashley Dubberley: Forceful right hander who topped the batting with 338 runs at 24.14. The opposition soon learnt that they had to get Ashley out early or chase lots of leather. Ashley's value to the team extended to wicketkeeping although he would probably have preferred to bowl his medium pacers - six wickets from 30 overs. Ashley's keeping was of a high standard and he finished with 17 catches for the season, a great effort. Grant Griffin: Spent the first couple of rounds helping out the U16/1(B) but it didn't take him long to get into stride once he did play. A bowling all rounder coming on at first change, his fast- medium swingers more often than not took wickets when the team needed it most. A natural big hitter, Grant only needs to be more selective early in his innings and the big scores will follow. Good slips fielder. David Henshaw: If there were a team player award, David would have a mortgage on it. Batted up and down the order depending on the circumstances. Best batting effort was saved for the final game when he shared a last wicket partnership of 24 with Ganka K. David's bowling has improved and he finished with three wickets at an average of 9.67. A very enthusiastic fielder who saved many runs over the season. Ganka Kurumoorthy: Leg spinner who was often asked to bowl when the batsmen were set and looking to score quick runs. Eight wickets at an average of 19 do not do justice to Ganka's value to the team. Ganka's batting is also improving and he scored his runs when they were needed the most. A very consistent and determined fielder. Continue to work hard on your leggies and you will continue to be a key team member. Sean Law: Only a matter of time before we see a big score from Sean. All that is needed is a bit of patience early in the innings and some hard work in the nets. Didn't get many opportunities with the ball but the effort put in should have been rewarded with many more wickets. Sean was our best fielder during the season, filled in more than capably at wicketkeeper and took 10 catches during the season. Jared Mohr: Jared has improved significantly since last season and his hard work was rewarded with 213 runs and 18 wickets. While preferring to bat in the middle of the order he answered the call and did a fine job opening. Still has a lot to learn about bowling offies but will get the rewards if he continues to improve. Captained the team with distinction in the last half of the season and was, as usual, very reliable in the field. Dushyant Rao: One of the most consistent performers with the bat, 'Dushy' has a great defensive technique and is a natural opener. A big score always looked likely once he got through the first five or six overs. Didn't bowl as many overs as is previous years but still managed to chip in with seven valuable wickets from his medium pacers when they most counted. A very safe fielder in the deep. Scott Renfrew: Another great team player, Scotty goes about his cricket with enthusiasm and a never defeated attitude. There was only limited opportunity for him to shine at the bowling crease and as a consequence he needed to work hard in the nets. Always on the lookout for quick singles in order to rotate the strike. Made gully his fielding position. Andrew Whitney: One of the most naturally gifted players in the team. Andrew made batting, bowling left handed medium or fielding all look easy. It was disappointing for him not to put a big score on the board but this will come. Maintain your defence and with plenty of work in the nets it won't be very long into the new season before the first fifty comes. Bowled brilliantly at times to pick up nine wickets and was a good outfielder. Pramod Wijayapala: Again this season our best and most reliable quickie. Pramod was the leading wicket taker with 22 and proved to be just as effective in his second spell with the wearing ball. An aggressive middle order batsman who uses the 'flat bat' to greatest effect when the situation is at its tightest. A great fighter for the team, Pramod shared the captaincy duties with Jared and is one of the team leaders.
