Overall a disappointing season for the Club's top graded team. There were many causes to this, two that should be mentioned was the lack of commitment by some A Grade players and the inability of the Club to move players up from lower grades to substitute their A Grade side. For the Club's top graded side to have fielded some 35 players during the one season is unheard of, yet it occurred. Throughout the season we won two first innings out of 14 games, a poor showing by anyone's standards. The introduction of youth into the A Grade with a view of looking at the long-term future of the Club did however work. With one under 16 player and two players in their second season in seniors selected all three showed promising signs and they may bode well for the future. Next season may see a further injection of some younger players in the top few teams to bolster the depth of player availability and further looking towards the future. THE TEAM Andrew McLellan: Captain. Andrew had a mixed season missing the first few games and then being sidelined after Christmas with a back complaint. He ended up playing 5 innings. Most probably not a season Schicky would like to remember for being fully fit for cricket. Steve Sarlog: Stand-in Captain. Steve took over from Andrew during Andrew's injuries. Had a very good season behind the stumps with 22 catches. Showed some glimpses of his batting prowess with some big hitting and fine shot selection. Ended up with 234 runs for the season. Denis Tokic: The big DT was also racked with injuries throughout the season, the most memorable being trying to outrun an under 16 player to the boundary and subsequently pulling a hamstring, to be out for the next three matches. Bowled exceptionally well when fit and in 8 innings took 24 wickets. Joe Gurka: AKA Doc bowled very well, with little reward and batted at the top end to be dismissed on some easy shots after putting in the hard yards. Doc is the type of bloke who will bounce back next season and thoroughly deserves to pick up more wickets. Andre Guthrie: Andre took on the mantle of either opening bat or first drop when required and seemed to relish this role. Some of his best innings were when he faced the new ball. Took a few great catches in the outfield, one at Coleman where he covered a large amount of ground to catch the ball with outstretched hands. Came in as a relief bowler and picked up some handy wickets. Will Dokter: One of the younger players in the side who played his best games at the beginning of the season, but needs to have better shot selection in the earlier parts of his innings. A good fielder with a very safe pair of hands and strong throws from the outfield. Neil Sammons: Neil stepped up to become our opening bowler with both Andrew and Denis injured - a job that he excelled at taking 31 wickets @ 18.8. A handy bowler with both the new and old ball he became the backbone to our bowling line-up. Struggled with the bat but started to play some shots near the end of the season and his confidence started to come back. Chris Springall: Chris came back to the Club this season after a good stint at Shires. A good batsman who topped scored with 408 runs @ 27.2. Made a 126 run partnership with Will in the first game and continued in the following games with some classic off drives and cover shots. Showed his hand as a bowler and picked up a few wickets as well as some very good fielding and catching skills. Stephen Denlow: Steve is another one of the younger players who showed some good skills with the ball. Picked up some vital wickets at the right time and in the end was most probably not bowled enough to give him more confidence. Although he did not bat to his usual standard he showed glimpses of what he is capable of when given the chance. Andrew Denlow: Andrew was our Under 16 player who volunteered to open the batting in A Grade. Showed some good technique and was dangerous with anything on his leg side. Will improve as he gets older and stronger when more shots will pierce the field more often. James King: James was a new player to the Club and showed some good skills with the bat and ball. A middle order batsman, he was capable of hitting some good runs. He also became a reliable back-up bowler. Couldn't finish the season off with the Club due to personal commitments. Darren Woods: Darren came into the side fairly late into the end of the first round. He showed signs of putting together some big innings, however, they never came to light. Used as a relief bowler on occasions and picked up some handy wickets. It would be remiss of me not to say a big thank you to all the fill in players, we hope you enjoyed your time with us and without you we would have been a lot worse off. Too many to name, but you know who you are.
