Congratulations to the 2002/2003 B1 Premiers. A long time in coming but good things come to those who wait ... and we have waited a bloody long time! Before the season is dissected, I would like to thank all who became "B1 Kookas" for a game or sometimes two! All 18 of you! That's right; our squad of 12 grew to 30 during the season. Without your contributions, we may not have got to where we did. The season commenced in the field against 01/02 B1 Premiers Hills Barbarians, all out for 215 (Ash Jolly 4/40, David Cope 3/28 and Sumit Kalia 4 outfield catches). Our reply could not have been better, winning by 9 wickets (1/230). The first wicket stand of 174 between Mark McLeod (93 no) and Sumit Kalia (89) was a pleasure to witness. Our next game resulted in a first innings loss to Greystanes then an outright victory over Wenty Leagues. We won the toss and sent Wenty into bat, rolling them for 76 by drinks with Glenn Fewell (6/15 off 9 overs) and Richard Cope (3/33) doing the damage. Our reply was marginally better, all out for 126 (Marty Keeble 41 and Glenn Fewell 27). Without Glenn for the following week, we bowled Wenty out for 133 (David Cope 4/46 and Richard Cope 3/49). Chasing 84, we achieved this with 3 wickets to spare. (Marty Keeble 28 and Michael Gadow 26) This was not without some angst as we were 2 players short. In our next game, we made 235 against Seven Hills RSL (Jason Thompson 52, Glenn Fewell 58 and David Cope 33 no). All the bowlers chipped in and we rolled them for 78 at drinks. Instead of having another go, we could not resist the cold carton of "crownies", shook hands and had a beer. The beer was obtained from a bet our wicketkeeper Darren Allen had with our # 3 Chris North. Darren bet Chris that he could not have a four "all run" at Ashley Brown reserve. Chris was batting with our quickest bloke Mark McLeod, duly hit an all run 4 with his second scoring shot! Well done Disco! Kings Langley were our Round 6 opponents and was the first game all season that our full squad was available. Kings Langley were all out for 146. We could not have achieved this without the spinning genius of Peter Micali, taking 6/13 off 9 overs. We cruised to 2/65, had a hiccup or two at 5/83 before our skipper Jason Thompson smashed 100 no, in an 86 run partnership with Scott Diamond (20 no). Back to back losses to Winston Hills and Hills Barbarians knocked us off the minor premiership lead. Performances of note were Chris North 61 vs Winston Hills and Richard Cope 5/52 and Luke McLeod (brother of Mark) 34 no vs Hills Barbarians). On a 45 degree day, we luckily won the toss and batted, keeping Greystanes to the full 42 overs, 8/161. We rolled them in 17 overs for 52 with all bowlers sharing the wickets. Best was Richard Cope 4/18. In view of the oppressive conditions and the cold beer, we called it a day. Round 11 saw us beat Wenty Leagues. We made 7/314 (Jason Thompson 70, Darren Allen 44 and Sumit Kalia 41) to their 152 (David Cope 7/30). Round 12 against Seven Hills RSL saw us all out for 226 (Chris North 83 and Darren Allen 46) to their 197. Sumit Kalia completed a rare double of the best bowling for the match 4/39 and 4 catches for the second time this season. We suffered a close loss to Kings Langley by 6 runs (Kings Langley 209, David Cope 4/55 and Glenn Fewell 3/40) to our 199 all out. At one point we were 6/186. By our last match we were assured of second spot. We decided to continue the long-standing tradition of drawing the batting order "out of the hat". Our bowling attack toiled hard to have Winston Hills all out for 135 (Luke McLeod 3/14). Our batting started a bit shaky and was 8/97 until our usual # 3 Chris North and # 5 Peter Micali made a 48 run partnership for the ninth wicket to win the match. This keeps our winning rate "out of the hat" at 6 from 6. Our semi final was too good to be true, Seven Hills RSL all out for 85 (Richard Cope 5/39).We ended the day 8/101 and on the Sunday, crept up to 128 (Sumit Kalia 31 and Dom Novella 27). Seven Hills were then hit with a "Fewelly Hurricane' 6/48, gone for 126, leaving us 84 to chase. Sumit Kalia 33 no and Chris North 36 no lead us to win by 9 wickets. Onto the Final... Our Final opponents were the 4th placed Kings Langley at Charles McLaughlin Oval. On what appeared to be a green top, we won the toss and sent them in. Kings Langley started with a blaze, with the first wicket falling at 111. Peter Micali then worked his spinning magic, 5/74 off 23 overs, many in partnership with spin twin Sumit Kalia, 2/47 off 17 overs. Kings Langley were all out for 226. We ended the day 1/17. Our innings continued poorly, being 5/47 when a brief but almighty thunderstorm hit the ground, delaying play for about 2 hours. We resumed play at 4:15pm, gritting it out until stumps at 5.30pm, Kings Langley still with 11 overs remaining, 7/149. We won't mention Kings Langley played a non-registered player under the name of one that was registered either! I can honestly say we would not have held on if not for a 91 no by Sumit Kalia. Sumit was ably assisted on resumption of play by Glenn Fewell 20, Darren Allen and Craig Sinclair. Sumit's regular season was interrupted with an overseas holiday during Christmas, so his figures, not reflecting his semi and final performances do not do him justice. Adding his 155 semi and final runs to his tally would see an overall aggregate of 421 runs at 35. This is on top of his 10 wickets and 16 outfield catches, pointing to a pretty good season and quite a handy cricketer (especially compared to the rest of us!). Hope to see him back next season. The batting award was hotly contested and decided in the last match. Jason Thompson scored 347 runs at 38.5 while Chris North made 338 runs at 42.25. The bowling award looked to have the name of Richard Cope etched in it by Christmas. This was until his brother David had an exceptional post Christmas/second round. David took 33 wickets at 13.8 (post-Christmas 20 wickets at 10) to Richard's 31 wickets at 18. Ironically, both finished on 36 wickets including the semi and final. Special mention goes to Glenn Fewell for his all round efforts. Glenn only bowled in 6 innings yet took 14 wickets at 8.5 and including finals, 21 wickets at 10. Glenn also scored 120 runs at an average of 24 in the lower order. We also can not forget Dom Novella, who is moving up north and has played his last season with the Kookas. His three ducks in the regular season were extremely unlucky yet hilarious at the same time. His call up for the semi saw him endure a fair bit of practice in the lead up weeks. The result was a handy 27. Sad to see a Kooka leave the nest. Good luck Dom. Finally, I would like to thank the Baulkham Hills Cricket Club for their support this season, just like the last five seasons. See you next season, let's win another!
