About Baulko

Who would have thought that there was any way that we could top last years performance? After sneaking into the semis we managed to win the whole thing, proving that when you hit the semis you go back and start from scratch. This season we made a name for ourselves going through the season undefeated and racking up a mountain of points along the way. Once again every player made his mark during the season and that's probably what makes this team as good and tight knit as it is. Plus having the only guy in Australia with every copy of the PDCA rulebook as your captain helps too. Anyhow the season was as fun and enjoyable, as it was successful with a few new players joining and providing entertainment as well as some good cricket. Some of the new recruits also made some changes and additions to the great game of cricket to liven it up for both fans and players. These additions include:
THE TEAM Mal Currey (Captain): Yet another solid season from this Baulko cricketing legend. In what may be his final year of professional cricket he continued to display the qualities of old and produced a few ripper catches as well as a great 40 run last wicket partnership with Kegs. Always followed his instincts while captaining the team and kept alive his traditional "Get a wicket and I'll give you another over" policy. An underrated asset to the game of cricket. Highlight: Last wicket 40 run stance with Jeremy, tail order batting at its best. Simon (Joycey) Joyce: Had yet another great season with the bat and ball. Will take out the batting award again this year but had some strong competition from the 2 youngn's and Jason. Hit another great century in a 135 run partnership with Hushy in the 45° round from hell. Didn't get the ball much at the start of the season but became the middle order destroyer towards the end. Good season but expect bigger scores from this man next season with the pressure now off him to consistently make runs. Highlight: 100 no, and his 5/21 vs Norwest, he got the wickets just before the rain came down. Jason (Jay) Currey: New player to the team this season but an old face that everybody knew. Solid opening bat who provided numerous 50 run opening stands with Dave. His wicket was always hard to get and when he was dismissed it was usually well deserved by the opposition, they had to earn his wicket. His 3 50+ scores were only really dampened by his 91, he batted brilliantly and really deserved to get to 3 figures. Bowling was attacking and always seemed to provide quick wickets. It's a very useful asset to have a spinner like Jas that may not appear till second or third change. Highlight: The 91, he came so close and his 3/13 (7) vs Parramatta, it was an enjoyable spell of bowling. Mark (Griggsy) Griggs: Had a great season after a bit of a poor start. Still has that ability to get out in the mid 40's and not get to 50. Hit his first century in a great day's batting, but still managed to give his mother a heart attack after almost being caught and bowled on 98. Also expect big things from Mark next year as he settles into his batting groove. Wasn't really used as a bowler much this year but his batting really shone. Highlight: 124 vs Parramatta, in what became a massive score, Mark's partnership with Jason really shone and the innings was a treat to watch. Chris (Hushy) Hush: What a year from this player. Everything happened for this man, he broke all the barriers. He hit his first 50, which included his first 6. From then on 6's became a regular part of his batting with a bit of friendly encouraging from Sash and Simon. Hushy's fielding improved immensely as he held on to some ripper catches that by all rights he shouldn't have taken. Yet another player who will continue to get better with every season. Great season from Hushy. Highlight: His 55 no vs Kings that included his first 6. Dave (Scruffy) Massingham: Every year I seem to be writing that Dave is becoming an established opening batsman, and he just seems to be getting better and better with every new season. Hit a great 50 in the semi and even though he was bowled the following ball, you couldn't wipe the smile off his face. Fielding as always was top notch as he threw his body at everything that came his way. Top cricketer who had his best season yet. Highlight: The 50 vs Guildford in the semi, saw the return of the infamous Massingham pull shot. Andrew (Junior) Joyce: Improved immensely in the bowling department and is cementing himself as a great first change bowler. Was unlucky not to have more wickets as he had many catches dropped. His speed increased, as did his accuracy. A bit unlucky with the bat but continued to shine in the fielding department. Great season Junior. Highlight: 5/23 vs Kings. Simon (Simey/Buck) Rogers: The blonde tipped Brett Lee style eye candy of the squad. Simon was deadly with the ball and a bit of chat from the batsman just fired him up more. I don't think he ever had a batsman get the better or him. Talked himself up in the batting department but always seemed to get out cheaply. He told everyone he was a big game batter and to his defence he was right, scoring 39 in the semi and 41 in the final. These 2 scores actually doubled his total runs for the season but they came at exactly the right time. Great cricketer who possesses that fire that in some games is just priceless. Highlight: 4/29 vs Winston Hills and the 41 in the final which include a huge 6 at North Rocks Oval that cleared the wire fence and landed on the middle of North Rocks Road. Sacha (Sash) Hilbrink: Sash started the season sporting a new hairstyle, which saw him resembling tennis ace Bjorn Borg. Bowling as always was tight and the first change bowlers didn't actually bowl in the first innings of a match until Round 4. Fielding was again top notch with 13 catches. His batting was good when required but like many of the lower order batters, he was usually sent in when we were either after quick runs in a few overs or we needed him to bat all day. Always took advantage of his chances though. A great cricketer. Highlight: 7/36 (13) vs Parramatta, best spell of inswing bowling I've seen yet. Jeremy (Kegs) Kerrigan: Jeremy was another newcomer to the team and provided laughs and some great lower order pinch hitting when it was needed. A good set of hands in the slips and a strong hitter. Jez is a very laid back cricketer who's always up for a few laughs both on and off the field. A top bloke. Highlight: His 40 run last wicket partnership with Mal, big hitting at its best. Jonathon (Jono) Bocking: Jono had a pretty hot and cold season. Had some good batting and bowling performances as well as a few shockers. Probably not given the chances he needed to provide some good scores. Was under bowled this season too. Fielding was still perfect, as he seemed to be throwing his body everywhere round the field week after week. Given the chances this man can shine. Highlight: 24 vs Parramatta had the pull shot working like a dream that day. Pat (Fezza) Mcphie: Fezz only played 2 games with the team but he left his mark. A great cricketer who bowls a hell of a lot faster than his action suggests. Had a great game vs Guildford hitting the ball to all parts of Ted Horward and almost collecting Mal's car. If we can get him back for a whole season you'll be seeing lots more of Fezz in the weekly reports. Highlight: Game vs Guildford, hit 43 with the bat then took 3/26 with the ball. lan Renton: Only played one game yet topped the batting averages. Nice guy who came along to one match and left with a catch and 108 runs. What more can you say. Highlight: The 108 of course. Mark (Powelly) Powell: Mark filled in for a few games when we were short. Always provided laughs and his fielding was above standard for a guy who only played cricket occasionally. Top bloke who we hope to see more of. Highlight: Quick fire 15 no vs Winston Hills. Patrick (Paddy) Mamo: The VC had an OK season, solid with the ball and pretty disappointing with the bat. Slips fielding was the big improver and didn't drop a catch till the final round of the comp. Some potential 50 were cut short by fading light and batting partners hogging the strike. Happy with the season though as for some reason it seemed no one in this team could put a foot wrong this year. Highlight: 33 no and 5/8 (7) vs Parramatta.
