2002/2003 Report - B11 Grade
In a pleasing piece of sporting symmetry, the season began and ended the same way for us, by getting over the top of Kings Langley on their own turf. The fact that the final game of the summer happened to be the Final, made it all the more pleasing. In between, we played some really good cricket, winning ten games (three outright) and losing two, finishing the home and away rounds second on the ladder.
Our second place finish set up a semi-final showdown with our archrivals AKA Sports. To cut a long story short, we almost stuffed it up, but defended 108 to win by the healthy margin of six runs. With our post season nerves out of the way, the grand final was a very different story. We batted very well indeed to rack up 194 big ones before dismissing Kings Langley for just 90. Victory was ours. Premiers!!
It was a season jam-packed with highlights, here are but a few of them;
Matt Friedrich's sensational early season form that saw him compile 217 runs in his first three digs, setting up a couple of outright wins that helped us finish second on the ladder.
Adam Tinley's superb finish to the year. Adam piled on 256 runs for his last five dismissals, including crucial knocks in both the semi-final and final.
Eric Ripps' lusty blows, strategical advice and provision of mobile TAB facilities.
Dave Higginbotham's bottler of an opening spell in the final. He removed the Kings Langley danger-men, taking 3/11 from 9 overs.
Adam Vincent's classic outfield catch vs Wenty Leagues and his part in a crucial 9 wicket stand in the final. Also led the way for his teammates with the eagerness he showed to arrive at the final on time.
Chris Marjoniemi's consistent top-quality keeping throughout the year. He conceded just 24 byes compared to the 108 we received from our opponents. Chris also scored plenty of runs, batting at just about every spot in the order for the good of the team.
Luke Fiore's high-pace outswing opening bowling that collected him 25 scalps (+4 in the finals). Luke also landed some big punches with the bat in a last wicket final partnership.
Kamil Choudray's crafty spinners and solid opening batting. Kamil really toughed it out with Chris in the final against some dangerous bowling to lay the foundation for the rest of the side. Kamil also had the ability to explain how any pitch/game/meteorological conditions would suit his bowling.
Ben Atkins' high quality all-round year with bat, ball and some sharp catching in the gully. Not forgetting his under utilised spinners.
Michael Hughes coming up with some big semi-final plays in the field, taking a sharp catch and getting a run out at crucial stages, plus his knack for aggravating opponents.
Troy Friedrich's textbook hip and shoulder to clean up his unsuspecting skipper against Seven Hills. Despite that setback, Troy went on to be one of the best of the teams several good allrounders.
Neil Perera's left arm swingers that got better and better as the year went on. Neil also held down the tough batting spot at first drop in good style.
Andrew Hinton's cunning ploy to lull Parra Leagues into a false sense of security by letting himself be taken for 30 runs in an over. Outright victory was ours in a matter of hours.
Special thanks go out to Sue for a sterling effort with the scorebook, to Marti and Daryl for filling in when needed and to all the friends and family members that lent their support over the season. Personally, I would like to thank all the guys for making me feel welcome in a team that had been playing together for some time.
Overall, it was a great year, and it was great to win the comp. The secret to our success was the evenness of the team. Six batsmen averaged between 20 and 30 and five bowlers took over 15 wickets each. Those who failed to achieve such a level of individual success did so through lack of opportunity rather than lack of ability.
