2002/2003 Report - B14 Grade

What a season of cricket, great year that ended most disappointingly for B14's. The season kicked off at Morgan Power and the players met one another for the first time. Players were very modest on their talents and so Charuka (the Captain) had to work with what he was told. A very good quote that we remember came from Chris White 'I am not much of a bowler, rather a batsman…' and getting Edward to bat at no 9. Chris ended up with 75 wickets at an average of 6 and Edward scored more than 350 runs for the season. The first game was disappointing with an outright loss by a few runs, however everyone realised each others strengths and weaknesses and Charuka started to immediately work on everyone's strengths and position them where they would fit best. Choosing Edward to act as the vice captain proved to be a very good one. Edward provided the leadership and the team tactics whenever we needed the most.

The game of the season has to be the first game we played against Kellyville. Losing our first wicket to the first ball of the day and lose next two wickets without adding any runs to the total and recover to make 149 runs and bowl Kellyville out for 148 on the last over of the day was the highlight of the season.

The first half of the season was sensational with only the 2 losses and the rest outright wins. Chathura Tissera knocked up 2 centuries in times we needed them most along with Charuka's consistent runs and Chris White continued with his ever-reliable bowling by picking up constant bags of wickets. Through the second half of the year it was mostly the bowlers that fired, particularly Sacha Fernandez and Andrew Mahoney. They started to pick up wickets and kept Chris White very quiet. The batsmen that held the team together in the later part of the season were Matthew Bracken and Edward Burchill, both notching up multiple 50's and big partnerships. The fielding was very much improved through the season with not many catches being dropped and a lot of sharp ones being taken. Edward had a good year with the gloves taking 20 catches and 5 stumpings. There was also some great support from the juniors constantly filling in through the year with Ashley Dubberly, Grant Griffen, Dushyant Rao and Jared Mohr. The catch of the year would have been Sam at first slip that grabbed an amazing ball one handed and flew through the air. The season came to a big stop in the semi finals where we lost by 13 runs. Once again it was the bowlers that did the damage and not much help from the batsmen. Overall a fabulous season, 11 strangers at the start of the season became good mates. Hopefully as promised, most of us will return next season and hope to be in the same team and complete the final hurdle of winning a championship, which we missed this season. The standouts of the year would have to be Chris White with 75 wickets at an average of 6, Andrew Mahoney and Sacha Fernandez with over 25 wickets, Chathura Tissera with 2 centuries at an average of 35, and Charuka and Edward with both over 350 runs.
