About Baulko

This was my second year as the captain of the B3 squad and this season had a sense of deja vu. Making it all the way to the finals only to be beaten in the semi by Hills Barbarians. This year the youngest player in our team was 29. I think overall that it had some bearing on the overall performance of the boys. Without any young blood to liven up the spirits, occasionally our game was tragic. On paper our team this year was one that was nearly unbeatable, even the opposition knew who the team was to beat come the finals. One of those occasions was during our first clash with this year's Runners Up, Hills Barbarians. Bowling at them most of the day on a matchbox ground we managed to get them out for 179. At the end of the first day we were 0/70. We went on to crush them with 2/183. Our second meeting with them we managed to bowl them out for 29 runs at Teddy 2. Then putting on 186 in reply, we put them back into bat and won outright as they could only manage another 111 runs, 47 runs short of making us bat again. Another great win was against this year's Premiers, Greystanes. Batting all day (our full 70 overs) at Teddy 2 we were 7/326. The next day we humiliated them by getting them all out for 45. At the end of the regular rounds, we finished Minor Premiers, with 9 wins and 3 losses. Unfortunately our winning run came to an end in the semi. Thanks guys for putting up with me throughout the year. THE TEAM Glen Mulvaney: AKA Lite Ice, Icey, Iceman, Mullos, famous for making sure the Baulko team on the field knows who the captain is, if anyone can't remember, I AM THE CAPTAIN DO AS I BLOODY WELL SAY OR GET OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Poor season with the bat, lacking some form. Started slowly with the ball but came good at the end. Finishing up with 31 wickets that included 7/57 vs Cumberland. Contributed $35 to the fine tin, consisting of two $10 dropped catches off my own bowling. Nick Connellan: AKA Tubby, Vice Ice, famous for having the luck of the Irish. Should have had a fine just for getting dropped in slips, could have made a fortune for the team. Also enjoys the occasional dance down the pitch, charging the bowler, most of the time only to block the ball. Had a good season with the bat hitting 355 runs for the season and winning the overall batting average with 44.4. Nick is also deadly with the ball and doesn't know when to stop. He is a "bowling machine". With only two of us (Vice Ice and Icey) qualifying for the bowling award this season, Nick won this also with an average of 9.5. Nick got the most wickets in the season for the team with 45 scalps. That included a 7/39 and 5/41 vs Parramatta. Contributing $29 dollars in fines, which included a dropped catch off his own bowling. Adam Ferguson: AKA Fergs, Frenchie, famous for perfecting the "French cut", by performing this stroke and getting the ball to go forward of square. Fergs also was lucky with the bat, losing count of the amount of times he got dropped. Fergs had a good season with the bat, opening on every occasion. He hit the most runs for our team this season with 358, and only an additional 6 runs in the semi. Fergs luck with the bat rubbed off to his bowling when given the chance. His occasional arm ball (every ball) had most batters guessing or just committing suicide and just getting out. Fergs best wicket would have been against Kings Langley when he bowled his change up ball (the arm ball), the batter padded forward hit it towards me, I managed to get a finger on it but dropped it, the batters took off to take a quick run, Fergs fielded the ball and slung it backhanded towards the stumps, and somehow managed to hit it running the batter out cold. Fergs only contributed $16 measly dollars in fines, equal lowest contributor. Andrew Pittman: AKA Pittos, always has a strategy or opinion on the game and how it should by played out. Generally very good in slips, but action was scarce in that position this season. Dropped more catches than he took. Had a good season with the bat - one of only three players to score more than 300 runs in a season, 323 and 6 in the semi. Pittos was our player who hit the highest score in an innings of 95, although checking the score book and re calculating the score as there were a couple of errors, had him stranded on 99, one run short of his ton. Had a few stints with the ball and managed to pick up a few vital wickets in the process, confirming that rubbish does get wickets. Contributed $29 in fines including two dropped catches in the semi with the fines doubled cost him $14. Steven Hobbs: AKA Hobbsy, known for his happy go lucky manner, especially when he supports the "stiff upper lip" look. Hobbsy's form generally improves when pushed to this limit, ie when a batter hits him for six, you can almost guarantee that the next ball will be several yards faster and whistling around the batters nose, then nearly guaranteed to soon get a wicket. Unfortunately it has the same effect when he is batting, that he generally goes for the big swing and sooner than later loses his own wicket. Hobbsy had a fair season with the bat scoring 246 for the season and 3 in the semi. He was also a vital contributor with the ball, although old age seemed to be creeping up a little too fast, and his stamina he could not contain for any great length of time. Contributing $27 in fines, starting the season off in the first game by batting without a box, then calling for one, only to get out not long after having it, that's a fine right there. Bernie Brown: AKA Brownie, "weekend at Bernies", tight arse, known for having short arms and long pockets. Brownie was an essential member of the team generally being the rock, or was it just that he was the oldest and wisest. Became the "tight arse" of the team after refusing to pay for a dropped catch fine, then thinking that he would pay but only half of it. Several weeks later, at trivia night in fact, we managed to scam the $1 out of him. Brownie had a good season with the bat averaging over 20. With the ball Brownie seemed to do everything right but he couldn't get any of the luck. In the semi he managed to give the opposition Captain a fat lip, and as he batted on Brownie dismissed him a couple of balls later LBW even though there was a definite edge onto the pads. A little luck all too late. Brownie contributed $22 to the fine tin. Greg Gersbach: AKA Skeeta, known for having the "gift of the gab", Skeeta was a little quieter this year with other things on his mind, including his wife. The fall of another good man to the charms of a woman. Congratulations Skeeta and Mel, hope you have a wonderful life together. Skeeta's form with the bat was up and down this season making a few quick runs. With the ball Skeeta wasn't given a lot of opportunity to impress, and didn't get many wickets. Contributing $48 in fines, Skeeta won the honour paying the most fines. Andrew Madden: AKA Maddos, Mad Dog, known for clearing the change rooms every time he gets out batting. It is amazing how his bat has lasted so long. Maddo seemed to be lacking some form with the bat this season, only with the occasional glimpse of what he is capable with. Maddo bowled a couple of overs this year and was rewarded a wicket in his first over. $30 was contributed to the fine tin this season by Maddos. Scott Thorn: AKA Thorny, known for being the wicket keeper in the team, and doing a respectable job of that this season. His last game, the semi probably one of his worst games dropping two sitters. He also took the most catches with 19 and 2 stumpings, not so hard when you are in the box seat every game. Thorny this year also won the most meat trays out of everyone in our team with a tally of 7. With the bat Thorny started slowly but found some form towards the end of the season which included a well-earned 30. Bowling 3 overs this year gave Thorny 2 unorthodox wickets. Contributing $45 to the fine tin put him in second top place behind Skeeta. Craig Prior: AKA Hoss, Hoss by name and nature, the Cartwrights would have been proud. Hoss is an exciting player to watch bat, playing some textbook shots and getting value for money for them. He bowled 5 overs and got 2 wickets which both came in the semi. He contributed only $16 to the fine tin, equal lowest with Fergs. Peter Huszczo: AKA Husk, Ballerina, known for wearing ballerina shoes on the field as he danced and pranced around any ball that came his way in the field. Also enjoys batting, although sometimes he forgets he is actually batting and doesn't swing his bat and lets the ball go on the stumps and gets dismissed. Husk's first runs for the season came against Wenty at their home ground, round 9. He managed to hit the ball in the air and was caught on 0, however the bowler bowled a no ball so he was not out, ending his duck run, he went on to make 6 valuable runs that game. Husk got the most ducks in our team this season with 4. With the ball he managed to pick up 3 wickets. He contributed $31 to the fine tin. Nandar Kumar: not AKA anybody. Known on the field, or in a game, as the guy who is wearing boxers while he bats, and has great difficulty running between the wickets. No more mental pictures here. He was a slow start with the bat but always managed to make some runs. With the ball picked up one wicket this season. Only contributed $2 to the fine tin but only played three games. Josh Rich: AKA Joshy, known for always being the twelfth man. He was always there to help us in the field when needed. He even played a couple of games. With the bat Joshy had one turn but was unable to turn that into any runs, much to the delight of Husk and Brownie, as fines were payable by anyone who scored less than Joshy. Joshy had an over with the ball but was unfortunate not to pick up a wicket from it. He contributed $4 to the fine tin. Ben Gersbach: AKA Jarmin, known for driving a different car around every time you saw him. Had one game for us this season against Wenty. He couldn't make any runs with the bat continuing his form from the previous season. He had the chance to bowl 4 overs and picked up 2 wickets. Although he only played one game, he regularly came down to the club to catch up, and in doing so picked himself up 4 meat trays for his trouble. He also contributed $5 to the fine tin. Nathan Blake: AKA Nath, known for being one of the quicker bowlers of Baulko. However the seasons and the Gods seem to have been good to Nath, as he seems to be a little unfit. That seems to have slowed him down some, but he was still quicker than anything else we had to offer, which isn't hard to do. Had a bat and made 6. Had a bowl and picked up 2 wickets. Contributed $2 to the fine tin. James Thomson: AKA Tang, he is a young player with a lot of talent, just needs to believe in himself. He bowled for us against Hills Barbarians 6 overs, 2 maidens, 1/16. Very tidy bowling and well controlled. He wasn't needed to bat this game and didn't have to pay any fines. Jason Currey: AKA Jase, only played the first game with us against Cumberland. He didn't get a chance to bat, however with the ball he was on target. Bowling 7 overs of spin for just 18 runs. Unfortunately Jase was not able to contribute anything to our fine tin. Jared Mohr: AKA ?, played in the last game of the season against Greystanes. He is also one of Baulkham Hills talented young cricketers. With the bat he managed to score 4 runs, and with the ball showed a lot of composure to the big hitting opposition. Unfortunately he was unable to get a wicket, and also didn't contribute to our fine tin. Greg McLoughlin: AKA Noddy, played for us against Hills Barbarians along with James Thomson. Noddy didn't get to bat or bowl but was very sharp in the field and saved a lot of runs. Noddy didn't contribute anything to the fine tin. Peter Touzel: AKA Pete, played in our final game of the year, the semi. He was a last minute recruit, no offence but there was nobody else we could get to play at such short notice. Pete had a bat and displayed all the form Baulko have come to know from him. He batted for probably about an hour for his 9 runs and was the last man standing, unfortunately ran out of partners. With the ball Pete's only over nearly gave him a wicket, unfortunately a dropped catch put an end to that. Pete was the last player to join our team and also didn't contribute to the fine tin. Well that's the boys and that's another year of cricket. Time to wind down during the winter months and prepare ourselves for another bigger and better season come spring. Take care,
Glen Mulvaney
