About Baulko

We started the season with about a dozen players (on paper) but this was quickly reduced to about eight core players by the first round. There were a few games we struggled to put 11 players on the park, but we understood that some other teams were in the same predicament. Hopefully next season all teams will have their main 11 plus a reserve or two. We had a bit of a disjointed season, finishing with only three first innings wins. When we played to our full potential, we really fired, but sadly we were simply outclassed in a number of encounters and finished the season outside the finals in 7th position. Despite this, it was an enjoyable season, with many team and personal highlights. It was great to see many of the younger players making a successful transition to senior cricket. Mitchell Walters scored the most runs (362 @ 22.63) and looked unstoppable when in full flight. Sadly, Mitch also tended to get himself out, when it all looked too easy. Gavin Jansz wasn't far behind with 355 runs @ 22.19. There was healthy rivalry behind this pair of friends, which was beneficial to the team, and it's ironic that they had similar stats. They both figured in a classy partnership of 118 against Wenty Waratahs in the 3rd round - Mitch scoring 55 and Gav 72. Gavin likes playing against that team, as in our second encounter (when we beat them) he scored his maiden century, scoring exactly 100 before getting caught straight after the milestone had been reached. Sam Freeman was Mr Reliable with the bat; he just makes it look so easy with his stroke play. Sam finished with 335 runs @ 25.77, and if it wasn't for Sam, Gav and Mitch our games would have been finished a lot earlier. In fact, only Adam Meakins (112) Greg McLoughlin (108) had aggregates in triple figures. Greg also did a sound job during the season as our main wicket keeper, with Chris Smedley filling in on occasion. I thought our opening bowlers Guy Battin (20 wickets @ 24.40) and Adam Meakins (26 wickets @ 21.38) were the pick throughout the season, with Gavin Jansz (14 wickets @ 19.50) also chiming in with some good spells. Guy bowls with very good pace and was very unlucky during a number of spells, with either questionable decisions or catches going down. Adam is very consistent and is destined for higher grades and accolades. The Skipper picked up 22 wickets @ 20.17 during the season, with a combination of seam and spin bowling, usually picking up a couple of wickets when coming to the bowling crease. At various times Sam (8 wickets @ 29.38), Mitch (8 wickets @ 35.63) and Ash-M2 (8 wickets @ 20.50) also chipped in with important wickets. Our catching (or lack of) was sometimes ordinary, sometimes spectacular - with a few "classics" taken throughout the season. Sam was our most consistent fieldsman, someone who wants the ball to come to him. His ground fielding and catching has improved out of sight over the fast few seasons and he is like a greyhound in field. Sam took 11 catches, including a couple where firstly I didn't think he would even get to the ball and another that was blasted directly at him from close range. David took 9 catches; Gav, Greg and Ash also snared 6 catches, with sneaky Peter, (and ring-in Malcolm Currey) taking 5 catches each. THE TEAM David Banks: (Banksie) Highlight: Blasting 47 off very few balls against Cumberland and "that catch" in the gully against Erskine Park - both at Yattenden. Famous Quote: "If M2 asks me one more time..." Guy Battin: Highlight: His overall fast bowling, his catch off Peter's bowling and his stylish 20 against Guildford. Famous Quote: "Come on" (in high-pitched voice) Sam Freeman: (Sammie) Highlight: Taking 5/39 against Cumberland Community off seven overs, his overall fast and spectacular catching/fielding and the 65 scored against Wenty Waratahs. Famous Quote: "Dave, give me a bowl." Gavin Jansz: Highlight: The 100 against Wenty Waratahs, to go with scores of 72 (including partnership of 118 with Mitch) and 22 from the first round meeting plus his 3/17 against Erskine Park. Famous Quotes: "I'm pumped" and "I'm ready to T-upl" Ashmeet Jolly: (M2) Highlight: 3/8 against Guildford, with the wickets falling in one long over (he thinks it's still a hat-trick!) and his ability to take catches when not paying attention when the ball gets drilled at you! Famous Quotes: "When am I bowling?" and "If I was captain, I would..." Greg McLoughlin: (Mundine) Highlight: His sound wicketkeeping throughout the season and a classy 29 not out against Guildford, after scoring 24 against the same team in the first round. Famous Quote: "Dad, I'm hungry. Can you get me something (unhealthy) to eat and drink"? Peter McLoughlin: (Tony) Highlight: Taking a wicket with his fifth ball in senior cricket (1/3 of 0.5 overs, the 2nd best bowling average in the Club!), and that superb left handed diving catch against Granville Pats. Famous Quote: "I'll do anything Skipper, as long as I bat last and don't have to bowl!" Adam Meakins: (Adds) Highlight: Being able to entice his girlfriend to come to some matches, some flashes of brilliance with the bat and a double of 3/35 and 2/40 against Wenty Waratahs. Famous Quote: (directed to Banksie) "I'm sure you only get wickets because they feel sorry for you." and "How come I always get ripped off with the bowling awards?" Chris Smedley: Highlight: Being awake at most of the games (when upright and fielding), and his 17 not out against Wenty Waratahs, showing glimpses of what we know he can do with the bat. Famous Quote: "You didn't dive for that catch.. .you fell over!" Darryl Smedley: Highlight: Taking a crucial (for Darryl!) wicket in the last game of the season to halve what would have been an average of close to 150! Famous Quote: "Why do the catches always get dropped off my bowling?" Mitchell Walters: (The Count) Highlight: His dominant partnership with Gav of 118 runs against Wenty Waratahs. Scoring 55 against the same team and his overall powerful and positive batting throughout the season. Famous Quotes: 'There will be carnage next time we play Erskine Park!" and "M2 better replace my chair and Frisbee and anything else of mine that he's broken." Thank you to the numerous players who helped fill-in for us during the season, often at short notice. All of these players made a contribution to the team and were very supportive of the club. This included Brad Adams, Brendon Byrne, Raj Chandiok, Jason Currey, Malcolm Currey, Troy Friedrich, Chris Hush, Mark Lovell, Jacob McCauley, Ron Moye, Des Pillay, Warwick Smedley, Jason Thompson and Peter Touzel. I especially wish to thank the youngsters who backed up from junior cricket in the morning to enable us to put eleven guys on the field. This also gave these players a taste of seniors cricket and highlights the depth of talent within the club. From the administrative side I would like to single out the following individuals, essentially from outside the team, who gave me great support during the season. Bob Dokter chased around for players for us after a number from our original squad had to be drafted into higher teams. Bob was extremely supportive and is a great clubman. My only gripe being that he personally debuted for the club in A Grade, not the B6's as he promised! Oh, and some dubious umpiring during the Senior Double Wicket day at Charles McLaughlin! Rick Thomas and I were robbed of a finals spot (and probably overall victory) by "that caught behind" being turned down early in the day. Fancy questioning Malcolm Currey's and my integrity! Malcolm's son Jason stole the day, pairing with Will (Bob's son), after dumping Peter McLoughlin at the last minute. The stewards should have been called! Anyhow, thanks again Bob for all the help you provided myself and my team throughout the season. Peter McLoughlin did so much for the team behind the scenes, and his influence did not go unnoticed. Peter often drafted junior players into our team and also assisted with scoring, umpiring, transport, arranging the meat raffles back at the "Sporto" and became a valued friend and regular member of the team during the later part of the season. Peter also wrote some entertaining match reports for Owzatt during the season. Congratulations on the "Clubman of the Year" Award - much deserved Peter, but I know you will equally cherish the ball that you took your maiden wicket with. Malcolm Currey also assisted by providing and arranging a number of players from his premiership winning side and Peter Touzel also was of great support throughout the season with a range of administrative matters (and the odd reminder as well!). Both of these gents had memorable "debuts" in our B6 side this year. Malcolm grabbed a bag of catches (five for the match!) behind the wickets whilst Peter batted for eons, almost carrying his bat, to compile a dogged 34 against some of the worst sledging I have experienced on the cricket field. For the record, Peter and I put on a quick 38 run partnership (for the ninth wicket), during which Peter contributed 1 run off the bat! Special thanks to my great friend and vice captain Darryl Smedley, who looked after the scorebook and the kit throughout the year, and was always there to offer advice and support. Thanks again to all the players, their parents and all who supported our team. Let's hope that next season we will have more continuity and stability, as if we keep our core players, with a few additions, I know we will be more than competitive. Bring on the 2003-2004 season!
