About Baulko

It is my pleasure to report on another excellent season for the Club, which saw us once again grow in numbers, with 32 teams taking the field. This was made up of 16 junior and 16 senior teams. There was only one junior and one senior grade where we didn't field a team. This saw us regain the position as the largest club in the Parramatta District Cricket Association. The Club continued in its efforts to provide the best facilities for the players with the emphasis currently being aimed towards the practice facilities. To this end, new practice nets were completed at Yattenden Oval, the end of the bowler's run up at Ted Horwood nets was turfed and the Crestwood nets fully concreted. The Crestwood nets will have new Astroturf laid before the start of the next season. I would like to thank the Baulkham Hills Shire Council for their assistance in conducting these ground improvements. Unfortunately the PDCA decided not to use the Ted Horwood fields for the Junior Inter Association representative season due to the poor state of these two fields for cricket. This situation will not improve until Council realises that not only is long grass not suitable for cricket, but by encouraging this type of growth, the grass does not mat together properly during the growing season, thus providing a better surface for both summer and winter sporting codes. On the field the juniors continued to show their strength. We once again ran the Have-A-Go program with 45 participants enrolling. This season we moved the program from Ted Horwood 3 to Charles McLaughlin Reserve. This was done for a number of reasons, ease of traffic access, closeness of amenities, better storage facilities for equipment and the additional funds generated when the canteen was being operated at the times when junior matches were is progress there. It was very pleasing to see the high level of parent participation in running the various skills stations each week and helping in running the games. I will not be available to be the Have-A-Go Coordinator next season, so we are looking for someone to undertake this role. This season we did not have as many teams qualify for the semi finals as normal with just 12 teams qualifying for the playoffs, however all these teams were placed either first or second. There were 5 teams who were minor premiers - 11/1 (undefeated), 16/1, B10 (undefeated), B13 and C grade. The curse of being minor premiers struck again with three of these teams losing in the semis. The finals resulted in a 100% success rate with all six teams who played the final being victorious. I congratulate the premiers for the season 2002/2003, the 11/1, 13/1, B1, B7, B10 and B11. Although cricket is very much a team sport, I feel we should recognise those who have been selected for further honours in the sport. This season we had 27 juniors and two seniors selected to represent the PDCA in the various Inter Association Shield competitions. We also had 12 players selected by the grade clubs to play in the A.W. Green Shield competition. These players were undoubtedly assisted in their ambitions by being able to gain turf experience in Club matches at Charles McLaughlin. On the financial side of the Club, we basically broke even for the season. This result was achieved through great support in our major fund raising activities held during the season, namely the Melbourne Cup trifecta, the Trivia Night, the Rotary Club raffle and the Saturday Night Meat Raffle. On behalf of the committee, I would like to thank those who organised and ran these events and those who so enthusiastically supported them. One of the problems facing the club over the years has been the difficulty in holding pre season practice for the juniors on Saturdays with so many being unable to attend to due involvement in other sports during this period of the year. It makes it very hard to organise and grade teams when there are so many players absent. The committee has therefore decided to conduct these trials on Sundays. Not only will this assist in many more being able to attend, but also with no winter sports being played at the various venues on Sundays, there will be more room available for practice. During the season, we were due to host an Under 12 junior side and combined senior side from Bankstown Sports Club at Ted Horwood in the annual challenge. For the second year in a row it rained and the matches had to be cancelled. We look forward to travelling to Bankstown next season when we will hopefully get a game. I would like to thank all senior captains, vice captains, junior coaches and managers and all those who helped in the smooth running of the club during the last season. I would also like to thank the Baulkham Hills Sports Club for their continued support both financially and in providing meeting and function facilities during the year. It certainly makes the running of the cricket club much easier with this kind of assistance. I would encourage everyone to support the Club that supports the Cricket Club. I would also like to especially thank the Management Committee for all their hard work. Without their efforts, the Club would not exist. Finally, congratulations to the following players who were the best in their respective grades for the entire Association:
Congratulations to all the trophy and premiership winners. Good luck for next season.
