This is my tenth Secretary's Report (yes, a decade, doesn't time fly?) and it doesn't get any easier to think what to write. Aggravating this is the fact that, being entrusted with putting together this grand tome, I have the opportunity to read the President's, Junior Secretary's and Senior Registrar's Reports before putting my fingers to the keyboard. Unfortunately, they have again left me very little to say! Once again I must stress my sincere thanks to the members of the Club's Management Committee. Due to the efforts of President Neil Boyle, Vice President Peter McLoughlin, Treasurer Malcolm Curry, Junior Secretary George Wasyluk, Senior Registrar Bob Dokter and Committee Members Rick Thomas, Graham Baker and Ian Chatman, the operation of a Cricket Club with 32 teams plus the Have-A-Go Clinic, looking after in excess of 500 players and officials, seems to just happen. It doesn't. It is due largely to the tireless, selfless and dedicated efforts of this small band. They deserve the thanks of all the members of this proud Club. One of our Official Guests mentioned in his address on Presentation Night that our Club maybe should be considering its succession planning for the management of the Club. My colleagues and I would probably argue with his "ageist" comments. Although the consideration that a number of us have past 10 years on the Committee, does make one think that more "fresh blood" in the senior positions may need to be considered in the not too distant future. It would be great to hear of more interest from the members of Baulkham Hills Cricket Club in becoming involved in the Management of their Club. I must also thank the Captains, Vice Captains, Coaches and Managers, who put in a huge amount toward the smooth operations of Baulkham Hills Cricket Club Inc. There is not enough recognition of these team officials and I sometimes feel that many players and parents really do not understand how much time goes into these roles. It does not all just happen on Saturday! Unfortunately, I must again point out that a few continue to let down the standard. Some teams are consistently not represented at meetings, and then want to know why they do not know what is going on in the Club! Then there is my annual end of season gripes, where some teams may miss out on inclusion in this report notwithstanding having up to three months to submit, while some have still yet to return their team kit! The finals campaign in 2002/2003 was "different". A little depressing with only 12 out of our 29 teams that play traditional cricket qualifying for the semi-finals (particularly as mine was again not one of them!). Then pleasing that they all qualified first or second and therefore should have had strong claims for berths in their respective final. Again somewhat disappointing that only half of the semi-finalist made it through to the finals. But eventually ecstatic that all six finalist became premiers in their grades. Congratulations to the B1, B7, B10, B11, Under 13/1 and Under 11/1 teams. That is about enough with the secretary's diatribe. Season 2003/2004 beckons and, as I sit looking at my computer monitor and see it is the first day of June, I realise pre-season practice starts next month! Albeit that it may be eight weeks away ... it is still next month! Go Baulko!
Yours in cricket, PS A little late breaking news. Congratulations are in order to Stewart "Mac" McCoullough, a Life Member and long time servant of the Baulkham Hills Cricket Club, who was awarded an OAM on the Queens Birthday Honours List. A huge "well done and well earned" from the officers and members at Baulko. |
