2003/2004 Report - Under 10 Blue

We started the season with a group of very young players. Within a few weeks the group blended into a fine team determined to play good cricket and enjoy the game. Winning the first game encouraged the players and they realized that if they played well it would not be hard to win games.

Our team had an excellent season, winning six games out of the eleven games played. Few times during the season the boys were unlucky not to record wins when playing with full strength teams, let down by the lack of players with some games played with 9 or 10 players.

Most of the boys played competitive cricket for the first time in this season. After the first couple of games, boys realised how important it is to defend their wicket and to reduce the number of wides and no-balls. It was a pleasure to watch how the boys progressively developed a sound defensive batting technique and to bowl straight.

Players and their parents thoroughly enjoyed the season and I would like to thank all the boys for giving us such an enjoyable time. My congratulations to the award winners and undoubtedly all the boys in our team are true champions in my mind.

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Phil Waddups, Romesh Lokuge, Kevin Balzarolo, Mukesh Pandya and Ganeshan Upendran for their help in scoring, umpiring and assisting in training sessions etc, during the season.

THE TEAM

Joshua Balzarolo: A very keen cricketer and participated in training diligently. Josh improved his batting, bowling and fielding skills as the season progressed. He is a very good all rounder capable of effecting run outs with his accurate throws in the field and was selected for the best fielder award.

Jack Dwyer: A fine all rounder enjoyed an excellent season with his performance. Jack started the season with well-developed skills in all areas of the game. Scored 63 runs for the season with a superb knock of 15 runs against Seven Hills, which included three boundaries. Jack received the award for batting (jointly with Tevin) for averaging 31.5 runs for the season. Jack bowled with pace and also shared the wicket keeping duties with Tevin. Well done Jack!

Devin Liyanage: Improved his batting and bowing skills with the every game he played. I am sure this youngster will develop into a fine cricketer soon. Devin is very polite, attended training diligently and gained a lot of self-confidence towards the second half of the season. Need to work on fielding and catching.

Tevin Liyanage: This excellent all rounder had an outstanding season with the bat and the ball. Averaged 31.5 runs with the bat and his highest score was 20 runs against Seven Hills which included five boundaries. Tevin received the award for batting (jointly with Jack) for his performance during the season. Tevin's pace bowling earned him 12 wickets for the season averaging 5.08 runs per wicket, also winning him the bowling award for the season. Tevin shared wicket-keeping duties with Jack and showed his skills with the gloves by taking few stumpings behind the wicket. Well done Tevin!

Shanik Lokuge: A keen player and always worked hard to contribute 100% to his team. Shanik is a good pace bowler and improved accuracy in the second half of the season. He bowled a lot better than what his bowling statistics reflects and was a bit unlucky not to get few more wickets in the second half of the season. Shanik is improving in his batting skills and I am sure he will develop into a fine cricketer soon.

Darshan Pandya: A stylish batsman with correct batting technique in defence and attack. It is a delight to watch the game when Darshan is at the batting crease. He is a very good pace bowler with accuracy. Darshan is also an excellent fielder. This youngster has an enormous potential to develop into a fine all rounder.

Taseen Rhman: Very good attacking batsman, who scored 31 runs for the season with his heavy bat, achieved the second highest batting average for the season. He has a well-developed technique in defense and attack. Taseen bowls slow medium pace and is a handy bowler. He is a good close fielder. Needs some work in selecting suitable balls to play attacking shots.

Sachin Rajapakse: This keen youngster improved his cricket skills and developed his confidence with every game he played. Sachin worked hard and developed into an accurate medium pace bowler taking more wickets in the second half of the season. Developed a sound defensive batting technique and has to work on playing attacking shots to score more runs. Also need to work on fielding and catching.

Ramal Rajapakse: This five-year-old boy started as a fill-in player and soon became a regular member of the team. Ramal developed a good bowling action and captured four wickets for thirteen runs in the game with Hills Barbarians. Developed sufficient batting skills to defend his wicket and showed courage to face fast bowling from bigger boys. Need to work on catching, fielding and playing attacking shots to score more runs.

Yadhavan Upendran: Progressively developed into a good batsman with sound defensive technique and also capable of playing attacking shots to score valuable runs. Yadhavan is a good fielder with a strong arm. He bowls medium pace and worked hard on the accuracy of his bowling. He was keen to contribute 100% for his team and was a very valued member of the team. Need to continue working on the accuracy of his bowling and catching.

Michael Waddups: A fine all rounder with well developed skills in batting, bowling and fielding. Took 12 wickets for the season with his accurate bowling and achieved second best bowling average for the season. Michael is a very keen cricketer and attended training diligently. Michael earned the award for most entertaining player for the season.
