2003/2004 Report - Under 12/2

This year saw a remarkable improvement on the previous with most of the boys now with a year's more experience.

After a slow start to the year and with our numbers down Cheryl Luther took on the duties of recruitment officer and came up with the goods, providing not only a full squad but 3 extras! Once we had the full complement of players, this team really started to play some good cricket. The team never lost a game outright and consistently frustrated the top teams with determined batting and great catching. The parents support this year was excellent, which was also a factor in the team going so well.

Our most exciting game of the year was when we beat an undefeated Norwest side in a one-day match in lead up to Christmas. What a great match, where it came down to the last over to seal the victory. It was unfortunate that Norwest pipped us out of the semi-final race by a solitary point!!

Other major highlights were Robert Slater getting a fantastic hat-trick, with Kieran, Mason and Patrick all within a whisker of achieving the same. Mason and Paul took some unbelievable catches, while Aleem and Kieran produced some great innings with the bat. The main thing was that every player gave his best out on the field. The team also had some first time cricketers in Matthew and Joel and boy didn't they show what they were made of!

Congratulations to all players and a big thank you to all the parents for your support during the year. A special thank you must go to Chris Luther (our manager) for his great support of the team and his on-field expertise. This is a very good team and if we keep together, we can have an even better year next season.

THE TEAM

Dayne Byrne: Dayne was the quiet achiever of the team. Whatever he was asked to do, he did it perfectly. He took some superb catches in close and troubled every batsman with his deceiving pace with the ball. Dayne was a very handy first or second change bowler who would trick the opposition into thinking, now the good bowlers are off. What a mistake many of those batsmen made! With a little more patience at the crease and picking the right ball to hit, Dayne will become a very good all-rounder.

Joel Celnikier: Now this guy was a real surprise packet. This being his first year a competitive cricket, Joel took a little time to settle in. However, once he gained some confidence out in the field he soon became one of our best out-fielders. Joel produced some great saves out in the deep, which prevented a number of boundaries being scored. With a bit more time in the nets with the bat and ball, Joel will become a very good young cricketer.

Robert Slater: Now can this lad talk it up on the field! Every team needs a person that can keep the team on its toes and put pressure on the batsmen without having to have the ball in his hands and Robert is that person for our team. It was Robert's positive attitude in the field that helped us win many of our matches. When it was time to dig deep with the bat and simply stay at the crease, Rob did just that - much to the frustration of the opposition. It is not that often that you will see a hat-trick taken, but I must say that Mr. Luther and myself had that pleasure watching Robert achieve this for the team.

Daniel Gibb: The one thing that can be said about Daniel is that he always gave a 110% effort. In the field he did a great job backing up for our wicket-keeper, saving many boundaries. Dan didn't get much time with the bat as the top order often did the job, but when it was asked of him, he gave his all. It was unfortunate that he was injured at school which prevented him playing the last couple of matches, but as any great sportsman would do, he still turned up to watch and support his team mates.

Mason Hemmings: You will go a long way to find a more gifted young cricketer than Mason. Most of the catches he took this year left us all shaking our heads, yet he made it look so effortless and unassuming. When it was time to use the bat, his timing was superb. Sometimes he was so relaxed it would make the coaching team nervous! Mason was often used as the first change bowler and when he found his line and length, he was lethal. One talented young man, who can go a long way with his sport with a bit more concentration.

Cameron Daines: Cameron was the entertainer of our team. Life was never boring with Cam at training or on match day! When it was time to bat he loved to slog any bad ball that was outside the leg stump. Now when it was time to bowl he would entertain and often surprise his coach with how many variations of a ball he could bowl. However part of the entertainment were the wickets he would some how always come up with. Another talented young sportsman who with a little bit more concentration can do very well.

Aleem Khan: Now this young man is a very talented batsman. On several occasions during the year Aleem managed to rack up a half century to help the team put pressure on the opposition. His batting style would often upset the opposition with its field placement and bowling attack. When in the field, Aleem was our main man with the gloves and showed a very safe pair of hands. Aleem will be set for a big season next year with a little bit more patience in picking the right ball to attack.

Patrick Daniel: Patrick struggled a bit this year with the bat, but boy did he make it up with the ball, particularly towards the end of the season. Patrick is capable of achieving a lot both with the bat and with the ball, but needs to maintain his concentration when he is not batting or bowling. This young man is another of the naturally talented bunch within the team and will continue to improve next year.

Paul Costi: Paul might be small in stature, but certainly not short of talent when it comes to his bowling and fielding. Paul was simply outstanding this year in the field with his catching. He too made it look so natural, even when taking the difficult catches. With the top order firing for most of the year, Paul really didn't have much opportunity to spend a lot of time at the crease, but like any good sportsman, you could never feel that he was disappointed. Many times during the year, when Paul found the right line, he took some great wickets at some crucial times.

Adam Luther: Adam opened the batting all year and did a stirling job. Between Adam and Aleem the team generally always got off to a solid start. The left hand, right hand combination also worked well against the opposition. Adam is a sweet timer of the ball, but just needs to pick the right time to play defensively to a good ball. Adam was also one of our strike bowlers. It was his line and length that proved to be extremely frustrating for the opposition. It was a very rare occasion that Adam would not achieve the vital breakthrough that the team needed in his opening spell. This young man was a pleasure to coach.

Matthew Vassallo: Matthew was another first timer to cricket this year, yet his improvement was remarkable. Every aspect of his game improved beyond what could be expected of a rookie in his first year. Matthew showed great enthusiasm for his cricket and always put in that extra effort. Matthew will continue to improve again next season if he shows the same determination and commitment that he showed this season. Well done. (Thanks Rachael and Joe for your support).

Nelson Brown: Nelson was another one of our enthusiastic team members. Nelson possesses a great set of hands for catching a high ball out in the deep and this year took many difficult catches. You will find it hard to come across a more eager player. Nelson would love to bowl, bat, catch and keep wickets all at the one time if he could. Every team needs a player like Nelson and this team was lucky enough to have him. A few vital wickets in cleaning up the innings was always Nelson's specialty.

Vikashan Thayanithy: Vikashan (or "Kar" as he was affectionately called by his team mates) proved to be a great sportsman during the year. He never once worried about what part he played in the team, just so long as he was involved. It was a memorable day when Car took his only wicket for the season with a beautiful leg spinner to leave the batsman without an answer. Keep up the good work and see you next season.

Kieran Houlahan: This young man has proved that he has a heart that is twice as big as his body. This boy 'lives and breathes' cricket and this year his efforts off the field shown through on the field. He was Mister Consistency with the bat and proved to be a potent opening bowler with Adam. His talk in the field with Robert always kept the team concentrating. Some of his team mates dreaded going into bat with him (namely his mate Mason) as he proved to be a whippet between the wickets and not only put pressure on the field, but also his batting partner. A fantastic season and proving to be a shining star with his cricket.
