2003/2004 Report - Under 13/1

What a fantastic season! Our competition was a very strong one. All six teams were capable of winning the competition - there were no easy games. So it was a superb effort to finish minor premiers - 12 points in front. We were not undefeated but we won all the close, tight games. The boys played with a great deal of fight and determination, which really showed in the final.

The final was against the second placed team, Kings Langley. They were the team who knocked us out in the semi last year. We won the toss and elected to bat. All our batsmen got a start with Azaan going on to make a fighting 41. Tyler finished the innings strongly with 15 no. Our final score was 149, which we were very pleased with. However, Kings Langley had scored more than this in their semi final the previous week, batting second. Sunday was going to be a big day!

Even though our bowlers bowled a tight line (Luke M 0/19 off 8 overs, Azaan 0/17 off 10 overs, Luke D 0/11 off 6 overs) we couldn't get that vital breakthrough that we so desperately needed.

Finally Ben came to our rescue in the 40th over taking two wickets in a row, just missing his hat trick. That was a sensational effort given that Ben had not had a lot of bowling leading up to the final. Then, Ben, Aaron and Hari kept things tight with some excellent bowling. At the 45th over Kings Langley was 3/115. They needed only 35 runs off 15 overs and we still needed 7 wickets! The spectators were starting to pace nervously, but the players and coach remained confident.

We felt we had the best bowling attack in the competition, now was the time to prove it. Luke D came back on for his second spell and bowled sensationally- 4 overs 4/11(10/4/22). He was backed up superbly by Evan - 5 overs 1/12, taking the last recognised KL batsman - a Parramatta rep batsman (10/1/22). At the 57th over they were 9/148. We needed one wicket, they needed 1 run to draw, 2 runs to win. We were running out of bowlers. Luke M, our brilliant captain, turned to Owen, who had aggravated a back injury in his first spell (5 overs 0/10). Owen gleefully accepted the challenge. A few dot balls, which were nerve racking for all spectators, before a brilliant caught behind by Andrew. WE HAD WON THE PREMIERSHIP BY ONE RUN!!!!!

Excitement flowed onto the ground as normally placid parents raced over to congratulate the team. This was the closest final I have ever been involved in. Commiserations to Kings Langley who were gracious in defeat and showed the kind of sportsmanship that makes them a pleasure to play against.

A big thank you to all the parents especially the scorers. Their support and help throughout the season was fabulous. Thanks also to Peter Butler for his role as manager.

THE TEAM

Tyler Azzopardi: Tyler continues to improve his batting. He has a great technique. He is a very solid wicket keeper. His attitude to the game is something to be admired. Under 13 Parramatta rep player.

Kapilesh Balander: Kapilesh was new to the club this year. He is a very enthusiastic player who quickly settled into the team. His batting and bowling technique is developing well and he will improve with experience.

Owen Butler: Owen settled into the opener's role with distinction. His fast bowling and excellent fielding give the batsmen no peace. He is always prepared to try something new.

Ben Clift: Mr Reliable. He always does the job asked of him. During the season he scored some very valuable runs late in the innings when they were badly needed. He was one of the final heroes with the ball.

Luke Dempsey: Luke continues to go from strength to strength. Both his batting and bowling are first class and he is a great fielder as well. He is a very competitive player always giving 100%. Under 12 Parramatta rep captain.

Damien Johnson: Damien was a very valuable part of our team in the early part of the season with some great fast bowling. Unfortunately he moved to Brisbane at Christmas.

Luke McNaught: Luke missed a third of the season with a broken arm. He proved to be a very popular and respected captain. He is a very quick bowler and his batting is improving all the time. He loves his cricket and works very hard at it.

Evan Platt: Evan is a very enthusiastic cricketer. He is always supportive of his teammates and his on field "chat" keep the boys focused. He is a very good swing bowler and he has a great batting technique, which is developing well.

Hari Rajah: An excellent spin bowler. He mesmerised many batsmen this year. His batting improved greatly over the season. He always had a smile on his face and was a welcome addition to our team this year. Under 13 Canterbury rep player.

Aaron Singh: Aaron was the second member of our "spin twins". Aaron provided us with the variety we needed. He often came on, in tight situations and did the job. He took a sensational catch in the final.

Azaan Vhora: Azaan is developing into an excellent cricketer who always gives 100%. He is a genuine quick bowler who is improving all the time. He showed more maturity and patience with his batting this year, carrying his bat in one game.

Andrew Wood: Andrew finished off the season on a high. His keeping in the semi and final were first class. There were stumpings, caught behinds and very few sundries. His batting is much better than his scores this year showed, he had some bad luck when at the crease.
