2003/2004 Report - Under 13/2

The team had a good season, especially as we often had less than 11 players, particularly before Christmas. To their credit, the boys worked very well together as a team, with the season's highlights being:
- The general improvement in individual skill levels with most of the boys achieving personal bests with both bat and ball; and
- Qualifying for the semi-finals by finishing in 4th place, and although beaten by minor-premiers Pendle Hill Colts in the semi-final, putting up our best all-round performance for the season and making Pendle Hill work very hard for their victory.

Thanks to Sam Lehmann, Cameron Daines, and Mason Hemmings from the Under 12's, and Christopher Gunton from the Under 11's who played in the team at various stages to boost our numbers.

THE TEAM

Matthew Gunton: Team captain and led the side with skill, maturity, and encouraged each team member to give their best effort. Matthew opened the batting with purpose and dedication and dug the side out of trouble on several occasions. He was the team's main wicket keeper in addition to being a good all round fieldsman, and a useful medium pace bowler.

Alex Bowen: Alex is a top order batsman with a good range of shots and sound defence. Alex spent less time wicket keeping this season, compared to previous seasons, and as a result, his bowling developed significantly to the point where he was regularly opening the bowling and a consistent wicket taker.

Andrew Casey: Andrew joined the team mid-way through the season and was not able to play every game due to school cricket commitments. However, his dedication and application were tremendous and a great example to the rest of the team. Andrew's innings of 96 in the semi-final against Pendle Hill was an outstanding innings in any circumstance, combining fine stroke play, solid defence and excellent running between the wickets. It was an innings that deserved a century. Andrew is also a good left arm spin bowler and fine fieldsman.

Pranav Khanna: Pranav batted at no. 3 or 4 throughout the season and is a good all round batsman who is particularly strong square of the wicket. He bowled with energy and determination, either opening the bowling or first change.

Gareth Cousin: Gareth's batting improved significantly this season, especially in his defence and off-side stroke play. This enabled him to hold a spot in the top half of the batting order throughout the season. Gareth became the team's regular first slip fieldsman and took some good reflex catches.

Joshua Rich: Joshua is a hard hitting batsman who, as the season progressed expanded his shot range and was hitting boundaries to all parts of the ground. Consequently, he was rewarded with a series of good scores. This added confidence was also evident in the improvements in his bowling and fielding.

Adam Bailey: Adam's batting improved enormously during the season, enabling him to go from being a lower order batsman to a competent middle order batsman, able to both defend confidently and attack the loose ball. This was a good reward for his application and willingness to learn. Adam is also a useful medium-pace bowler and a good athletic fieldsman.

Alan Sala: Alan was playing his first season of competition cricket and is rapidly developing into a fine left arm pace bowler. By the latter half of the season, he was either opening or bowling first change. His batting also made good progress and he took some good catches in the field. Alan's achievements were well earned and resulted from a good attitude and consistent effort.

Kanav Malhotra: Kanav played several handy innings with the bat and although he usually batted in the lower half of the order, was always keen to bat higher when an opportunity arose. His energetic efforts in the field saw him save many runs and he also took a couple of fine catches. Kanav is also an enthusiastic spin bowler.

Daniel Crook: Daniel missed a large part of the first half of the season due to injury and we sorely missed his aggressive pace bowling at this time. When he was fully fit after Christmas, he consistently took early wickets and his accuracy meant that opposing batsmen weren't able to score easy runs off his bowling. Daniel is a hard-hitting lower order batsman, and brings a good aggressive attitude to his cricket.

Preet Gosal: Preet was playing his first season of competition cricket and was always very keen to develop his cricket. He always gave 100 per cent effort, whether batting, bowling or fielding.
