2003/2004 Report - Under 16/1

The season could best be described as one that should have been. The season started with only 10 players, but fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on the way you look at it we were able to get three players from the 15/1's after they were not able to get a team together.

Throughout the season there was considerable displays of talent from all the boys. On many occasions we had control of the game only to have a half hour lapse in concentration to see the opposition come back into the game. Perhaps fewer parties and earlier nights before the match may have helped.

Our bowlers were equal to or better than most of the teams in the competition as was our fielding. Most of the teams we faced at Charles McLaughlin were terrified of playing on a turf pitch and this worked in our favour.

It was unfortunate that we lost Robert Meyrick early in the season due to a shoulder injury as he was in great form. However we were able to get Eddie Wojtun back into the team to take his place.

This was the last year in juniors for most of the team before they move onto seniors. I hope that they play the game in the same spirit they did this season. Best of luck for the future fellas.

THE TEAM

James Chatman: James is a good all round player. On his day he can be quite lethal with the ball and bat. He is very energetic on the field and has great reflexes, which saw him fielding in slips most of the time.

Jeremy Daniel: Jeremy opened the batting several times and took some tremendous catches. A very likeable young man.

Michael Delfino: Often his own worst critic, Michael always gives it his all. He shows great talent with the bat when he concentrates. His representative cricket will only help him to become a great player.

Troy Higginbotham (U15): Troy's bowling improved as the season progressed and he picked up quite a few valuable wickets through the season. He has a strong arm when fielding deep and continues to improve all round especially with his batting.

John Jerome (U15): Mr Cool. Always cool whether bowling or batting. He is a competent spin bowler and puts it on the mark from the first ball, often frustrating batsmen into making mistakes. When batting he shows great technique and should become quite an accomplished batsman and a benefit to any team.

Chris Jones: Chris proved to be a great wicket-keeper throughout the season. He showed great enthusiasm and pushed the team through the overs when required. Another one who loves his cricket.

Maxim Perrera: One of the opening bowlers Max can swing the ball well in the right conditions. Unfortunately he did suffer from a shoulder injury but could always be counted on to put in. An accomplished batsman who has the ability to do well.

Robert Meyrick (U15): Although Rob was only able to play a few games before his shoulder gave out, he showed that he could get genuine bounce out of a turf pitch. There were quite a few batsmen with the bruises to prove it.

Keith Morrison: Never afraid to bend his back when bowling Keith was our opening bowler. As with most openers his final figures did not really display his true value to the team. A very fierce competitor who could really fire up his bowling if the opposition were foolish enough to make a comment to him. A good season Keith.

John Shanahan: Another quiet achiever, John was never afraid to put in for the team. Another newcomer to the team he was very active in the field and he protected his wicket well when batting.

Simon Smith: Simon proved to be a good leader and is a worthy recipient on the Under 16 Best and Fairest Trophy. As captain of the team he really needed to back himself by bowling more often. A great thinker, with the ability to position the field well.

Adam Thomas: Adam displays the qualities of becoming an all round player. He held quite a few partnerships together and plays the game the way you should.

Eddie Wojtun: A tearaway player with excellent commitment once he is on the field. He is very athletic and his fielding usually put the opposition in two minds when attempting an extra run.
