This season could best be compared with every season of the NSW Waratahs in the "Super 12's". What started as promising ended in disappointment. Although we did not meet our expectations of a spot in the final four (we were there until the last round!), there were plenty of highlights along the way. Here is the "tale of the tape". A bye in Round 1 saw us away against Hills Barbarians. We thought our all out for 285 (with one player short) was going to be enough (Chris North 150, in at 1/9 out at 285) however they passed us 9 down. Round 3 against the Two Blues coincided with the wedding of Richard Cope and a total of 9 players out. Although we did not win, for the 7 players that showed, thank you. In Round 4, we had our first win of the season with Guildford Leagues all out for 160 (Sumit Kalia 5/42), passing their total 3 down (Sumit Kalia 60 no). This was followed by a win in Round 6 against Wenty Waratahs (again 2 short) where we went from 1/70 to 7/152 before a last wicket stand of 41 between Richard Cope (25) and Keith Morrison (14 no) saw us "all out" for 193 (Chris North 75). That proved to be enough to beat them by 21 runs (Peter Micali 4/20). Our Round 6 game against Wenty Leagues was one of the few games to play both weekends due to poor weather. They did not want to be there and did their best attempt to cancel the first week ... and it showed when we ended the day 5/360. Our first wicket stand of 143 was the highest all season. The damage was done by Sumit Kalia (157), ably assisted by his opening partner Mark McLeod (69), a cameo innings of Chris North (50) and Jason Thompson (39) were all a delight to witness. It was enough to beat them by 148 runs. Round 7 in hindsight proved to be a crucial wash out against Kings Langley, our last game before the Christmas break as we had the bye in Round 8. We headed into the new year in second place, however was dealt a big blow with our opening bowler Richard Cope out for the reminder of the season, diagnosed with a hernia. Round 9 saw a combination of a poor "home" deck and poor batting to struggle to 91 against Hills Barbarians (Peter Micali 20). This total was not enough for the eventual premiers, getting the runs 5 down. It could have been a different story however if the writer had taken a chance after drinks that would have seen them 5/40! Round 10 was our first one dayer against the Two Blues. Off 42 overs, they were all out for 187 (David Cope 3/38). We were cruising at drinks, 0/101. After drinks, we lost 9 wickets for 62, being 9/178 at the end (Sumit Kalia 60 and Mark McLeod 41). It was disappointing to see 4 wickets fall to mirror catches to the same bloke at deep mid wicket in the space of 20 minutes! The slump was reversed in Round 11 against Guildford Leagues, having them all out for 110, with Peter Micali the star, 6/39 off 17 overs. We managed to pass their total 6 down (6/113, Chris North 62 no and Jason Thompson 31). We also managed 4 ducks in this same innings too!! There were no ducks in our Round 12 match against Wenty Waratahs, 9/357 with Chris North 155, his second "150" for the season, Sumit Kalia 58 and Peter Micali 62. The opposition duly bored us to tears, taking 56 overs to finally be all out for 148. Glenn Fewell, back against his old club took 7/40. This is where the fun begins ... with a couple of recent wins and other results in our favour, we were still coming second into Round 13. There is however, only a first innings win separating second to sixth places. Due to the bucks weekend for Scott Diamond we played one short and the team sheet included four new faces, getting Wenty Leagues all out for 174. Despite the best efforts of Mark McLeod (35) and Darren Allen (29), we could only manage 141. What a difference another batsman/fielder would have made. Round 14 match against Kings Langley had the first week washed out and the second happen to coincide with the wedding of Scotty D once again having 5 players out but this time, 2 players short. This game pitted fourth verses fifth, the winner securing a spot in the semis. A strange innings with Kings Langley scoring 170 off their 42 overs (David Cope 6/14 and Sumit Kalia 3/29 both off 10 overs). Strange in that only 2 of their players managed to get into double figures with one, a neat 100. This total proved to be too much ... in fact 36 runs too much but the again, probably not for 2 additional batsman though. Well done to Mark McLeod, 52. Thanks to Mark McLeod's brother Luke who filled-in in the outfield. A disappointing end to what could have been! Our "in house" player of the year is Chris North with 568 runs @ 63, closely followed by Sumit Kalia, 389 runs @ 39 and 20 wickets @ 15. Another performance of note was the consistent opener Mark McLeod, 234 runs @ 26. In the bowling department, it looked like for the first time since our "reformation" that there would not be a "winner" awarded this season. Going into the last round, I needed 6 wickets and Sumit 5 to qualify and I just made it, 22 wickets @ 15. Other performances of note include Glenn Fewell who bowled in just 7 innings took 17 wickets @ 14 and Peter Micali, off just 42 overs took 10 wickets @ 10. Looking forward, we will probably need a larger squad of players than in the past, to overcome the times where we are 1 or 2 short. There was no need to appoint a 12th man all season! We did not have any luck either with the unforseen injury to Richard Cope after Christmas and Scott Diamond only playing 2 games due to work commitments. Anyway, there are no sheep stations at stake and whilst you like to win, it's not the be all to end all either. What is important is to get out of the house, away from our partners and kids for the afternoon, have a laugh with your mates and play some competitive cricket. Isn't that what social cricket is all about? Thanks to the club for its management and support, especially to try and cover for our absences and the many, including Keith Morrison who became a "Kooka" for a game or two. Hopefully next season the square at Charles McLaughlin will be vastly improved on what was on offer for 2003/04. See you all in 2004/05.
