After a very disappointing end to the 2002/2003 season, it was concluded by the grading committee to re-grade the B9 players to B10's. With so many full-time players deciding to play on a part-time basis, it was soon realised that we were not going to be able to field 11 players each week. The grading committee came to our rescue and we were able to field 11 players at our beloved home ground North Rocks Park for the first game of the season. The dual captains from the previous season (the two Benny's) decided that playing rugby union in the off season would benefit the side by not being available for the first game of the season. This set the tone as we lost our first game of the season by 3pm on the second day to Guildford Leagues. Guildford Leagues only won two games of the season and both games they won against us. A few highlights to the season was Jerome Furtado's 96 in an epic match against Norwest. The eventual bowler who took his wicket peppered Jerome with bouncer after bouncer (I think the bowler bowled 20 overs would bowl 5 bouncers out of 6 deliveries and be sent to the boundary for his only decent ball of each over. We had one memorable match against Kings Langley at North Rocks Park. The Kings Langley captain decided it was a good idea to send us in with only 7 players available on a hot stinking day in January 2004. The idea seemed like a good one at the time, but much to his disappointment, Baulkham Hills decided to last their 35 overs and put on quite a good total in the heat. The Kings Langley players trudged off the ground after chasing the red leather for close to 3 hours in the heat. The Baulkham Hills players were that fired up that they cleaned up Kings Langley for 42 in less than 15 overs. It was one of the finest moments in the season. A special mention must go to our illustrious captain Peter Khoury who missed one match in the season, led from the front, had the best average in the side, and lasted more innings than any other player. Thanks Pete for looking after the side, ringing up player after player week in week out, always striving to achieve the best from his players. There were many newcomers to the side and two that should get a mention are John Young and Marty Daniel. Both players were very much welcomed into the side as they took most of the wickets and had good batting averages as well. John did not think he would be available to play each game, but managed to shift his work commitments so he could concentrate on this side and I thank John for that. Marty was used as a specialist batsman, but showed his potential with the ball that much that he ended up taking 21 wickets for the season and had the best bowling figures in any game 6/9 off 4 overs. Another disappointing season, we started off pretty poorly, only winning a handful of matches, where we lost more matches then what we won. Hopefully that grading committee will be lenient on us again, drop us down to B11's or even lower, give us more full time players would also help the cause. In two seasons for Baulkham Hills, we've managed to use close to 50 players with a nucleus of 5-6 players. Not an excuse, but more full time players will definitely help the cause for the upcoming season.
