B14's completed another great year of cricket that ended most disappointingly. B14's failed to reach beyond semi finals for the second year. This year the team was made from last year's B12 and B14 teams. We had the talent to win the championship this time. But as they say there can be only one winner at the end of the day. We started the season really well making 300 hundred odd runs every innings. This over confidence factor brought us down at the end. We were so confident that we would win the tournament and at times perhaps we fail to give the respect the opposition deserved. When we were on top of our game, we failed to put the opposition completely out of the game. There were lots of positives to come out during the season. Chris White maintained his magic bowling performance claiming 55 wickets at an average of 7 per wicket. Along the way he claimed 2, 10 wickets per match and a hat trick performances. Matt Bracken established himself as an opening batsman and his consistency with the bat with an average of 43 runs per innings earned him more than 500 runs for the season and rewarded with the batting award. Charuka started the season with lot of promise with an unbeaten 150 runs and maybe fell short of delivering the promise he posed at the beginning. Edward continued to improve his wicket keeping skills and his ambition to be the winner of the six hitting competition brought his downfall many times with the bat and in the end he fell short of being recognised as a batsman in the B14 team. However he managed to hit 14 sixes and to be the winner of the six hitting competition. Michael Homsy proved he is second to none by sharing the new ball responsibilities with Whitey. Homsey claimed 38 wickets and he proved that he could bowl spinners if that is what is required. Further, Homsey took arguably the catch of the season at slips by hanging on to a one handed blinder. Sacha Fernandez featured as an all rounder in the team. His less than run a ball unbeaten 50 against Seven Hills was his best performance. Ian Chatman built a reputation as a partnership breaker and claimed most of his victims with the first ball of his spell. His deceiving pace and accuracy undid many good opposition batsmen. James Chatman yet again proved his class in the field by claiming the fielding award two years in a row. At a time when Baulkham hills were 4 wickets for 3 runs against Kings Langley, James turned around the situation to win the game for us. Braith demonstrated to all of us how to be committed at all times in the game. Braith narrowly missed the fielding award this year and his 55 not out against Seven Hills and sharing an unbroken 200 run partnership with Charuka was his outstanding performances. Chathura started the season well and was well within reach of re-claiming the batting award for the second year. Unfortunately cricket no longer became a priority in his life and he decided to leave the team. This made a huge negative impact to our batting as a team. Andrew Mahoney brought much needed variety to the team with his leg spinners. Keith Morrison, Reece Jones, Jake Gorman, Duminda, Daniel Chatman, Graham Baker and Nathan Blake represented B14s and their contributions are highly appreciated by the B14 team. Overall, all of us brought lot of talent and variety to the team. We had great fun during the season. However to miss-out in the semi finals was heart breaking for most of us. It would not be appropriate if nothing is mentioned about the semi final. Statistics proved that Baulkham Hills bowled out their opposition less than 94 runs per innings and on average Baulkham Hills scored 215 runs per innings. This proved that had we played to our potential we should have won the semi finals easily. The game was lost when the opposition got away during the middle of their innings and posted a total of 180 runs and we had to bat out 40 minutes on Saturday. During that time we lost 4 crucial wickets. When we made 9 for 114, most of the senior players thought the best thing for us to do is to declare and get the Pendle Hills out cheaply and chase the runs quickly. Although it was forecasted to rain whole day, we had 2 hours of uninterrupted play and many of us thought rain would hold off. Further, to add to our confidence, 3 weeks ago we have bowled the very same team for less than 60 runs within an hour. For us this was a do or die situation and we backed ourselves to bowl the opposition within an hour and get the runs. To add to our bad luck the game ended at the declaration of our innings due to rain. There were doubts of whether declaration was the best thing to do. At 5:30 pm, the rain completely stopped and there was possibility of play. We will never find out whether Baulkham hills could have hanged on to their last wicket to hold on to a miraculous draw. B14 team has grown to be a strong team during last two years. Most of the guys are keen to come back next year and hoping to go 2 steps better next year.
