About Baulko

We selected this side with the future of the Club in mind. A group of talented young men who had risen from the ranks of the Juniors with some having a few senior years under their belt. We also blended in a bit of experience from ex-Shire players and senior players. The team finished 6th with a 6 win, 7 loss and one outright loss to their names, but the results did not portray the closeness of some of the games. The team has tremendous potential which I am sure will hold them in good stead in the next season. What let us down the most was the inconsistency in our batting and allowing too many sundries to go by. With a field set for off side bowling it was remarkable how many balls went down the leg side. However having said that, it was surprising to note that the majority of our wickets were bowled, followed by LBW then caught. A straighter line will have all the future oppositions in dismay. Another factor was the loss of Des Pillay (opening bowler) and Will Dokter (No. 3 batsman) both ceased playing due to work commitments. Without a doubt, retaining these players would have made a huge difference in where the team finished. Noting we lost one game by 1 run and another by 5, both to the top team in the competition. A special thanks to Bob Dokter, Greg McLaughlin and Josh Rich for filling in when the team was short. They all contributed one way or another to the team. Also, a thank you to Ann Denlow who assisted with the scoring, it was very much appreciated. THE TEAM Keenan Galas: Captain - Keenan opened the bowling and it was not until the 5th game that he took any wickets (5/25). From there the floodgates opened and he produced some excellent spells, finishing with the most wickets for the team (29 for an average of 15.72) His batting let him down by playing too many loose shots, but I am sure that he will benefit from this year's experience. Brendan Jansz: Vice Captain - By far the most consistent batsmen of the team, finishing with 573 runs at an average of 38.2. His highest score was an impressive 154 against Winston Hills in Round 13. Brendan was also very agile in the field, covering the mid wicket area resulting in 5 run-outs and 5 catches. Brendan was the steadying influence on the side and is a natural leader of the future. Talks about going back to Grade, which will be a huge loss to the Club. Andrew Denlow: Opening Batsman - Showed a lot more consistency this year and had more power in his shot selection. Andrew stayed around for some useful partnerships and benefited by opening with Brendan. Took an absolute screamer of a catch in first slip to have Greystanes in trouble. He will continue to improve with each season and will hold his own in any team as an opening batsman. Stephen Denlow: Opening Bowler - Starting to become more of an all rounder than an opening bowler. Took some very useful wickets and finished with a healthy 19 wickets for the season. He backed this up with a fine 199 with the bat for an average of 18.09. Needs to tighten up on the bowling with a habit of bowling down leg. A slow down in pace may see him be more consistent and take more wickets. Will Dokter: Batsman - A talented batsman who is good to watch on his day. Top scored with 106 against Parramatta Leagues, Round 2. Handy in the field with some good catches and strong throws from the outfield. Filled in as our keeper when our regular keeper quit for a job. Kept well and took 5 catches. Steve Hobbs: Opening Bowler - Steve stepped up to the position of opening bowler when Des left. Good for about 6 overs and very effective in taking wickets. Took 28 wickets for an average of 11.57 by far the best average. He also batted well and nearly won us a game with some lofty hitting. Overall he scored 218 runs @ 18.17. Good first or second slips and also filled in as our keeper. Proved to be one of our better all rounders. Gavin Jansz: All Rounder - Gavin typifies what an all rounder should be able to do. Come in and bowl when wickets are not falling, bat when wickets are falling. He took a healthy 19 wickets @ 16.68 and scored 317 runs @ 22.64. A big hitter who timed the ball nicely, however, he mostly got himself out by playing soft loose shots. Had a mini contest with Steve Hobbs on who could hit the most sixes with Gavin winning with 12, five clear of Steve. Keith Morrison: Bowler - Keith who also played in the 16/1's joined the team after the Christmas break. He had a nice introduction to seniors with his first ball being hit for 6. But he recovered well to start producing some fiery innings near the end of the season. He is one bowler that will develop more as he gets older and is worth looking out for in the seasons to come. Tarin Piskulich: Bowler - Tarin also played in the 16/2's, but this is considered well below his standard. Tarin was under-utilised as one of our bowlers, who was capable of opening or bowling at first change. He took 15 wickets @ 13.27 to be our second most economical bowler. He was a stump-to-stump bowler who caught batman sleeping thinking they could hit him out of the ground. The year's spell in the B3's will do him the world of good and he is definitely one of the club's better younger bowlers. Dean Rebiero: Keeper - Dean joined the team with his cousins, Brendan and Gavin. Didn't really have, by his standards, a great season, but ended up putting on the gloves after Ashley, and then Will left. He did an excellent job as our keeper and improved with each game. Greg Ursich: Batsman - Greg joined the team just before Christmas to take over from Will. Greg settled into the team well and after a shaky start, his batting improved and he put on soon very handy innings. Suited more to a field that lets the ball run, he had a bit of trouble coping with the longer grass on some of the fields. Ended up with a very healthy average of 22.29. Greg also has a pair of safe hands resulting in some excellent catching. Mitch Walters: Batsman - Mitch came to the team with a nice spin action but was not used much, due to the smaller grounds that we played on. His batting did flourish, although he threw away his wickets sometimes when he looked settled in. Mitch finished with the third highest aggregate of 237 @ 16.93. On the last game he decided to bowl medium pace and picked up a handy wicket. This may be a thing to come from Mitch and he proved very economical bowling pace.
