2003/2004 Report - B4 Grade
It was a season of rebuilding our team after three premierships in a row we lost some key players including an opening bowler, opening batsman and wicket keeper. Then Ed Wouters, our other bowler, broke down with a back injury and was out for the season, then Gary Creighton broke his arm which put him out for six weeks ... if it wasn't for bad luck we'd have no luck at all!! So we did all right to be a shandy off the semis. It was a very close season with six teams still in contention for the semis in the last round, but it wasn't to be this time.
There was some highlights to come from it, firstly chasing two scores successfully of 250 runs which we hadn't done before. Two new guys Andrew Nix and Peter Zuvela showing plenty of promise for the future.
THE TEAM
Gary Wheway: The Skipper had his best ever season particularly with the bat scoring 719 runs at 65.36 with two centuries and 3 large fifties including a highest score of 163 no and match winning score against our arch rivals. He was consistent right through the season only failing twice. Also chipped in with his best bowling figures of 6/47.
Ken Poulsen: Buckets had a sound season in his usual opening spot, grinding the bowling down in his normal fashion. Ken also had some very useful bowling spells picking up multiple wickets and probably fooled the batsman with his one step run up!
Rod Fletcher: Rocket had the bowling attack on his shoulders this season with the lack of bowling depth but still you needed a court order to get the ball out of his hands. He ended up with two bags of five wickets as well. Rod batted with more responsibility and has very safe hands taking the most catches this year.
Andrew Nix: Nixie in his debut cricket season performed very well with bat and ball and is very much an all rounder. He bowled some long spells and didn't shirk the issue. He has a baseball background and can hit and throw a ball a long way.
Andrew Eves: Chucky came back from semi retirement to help out and wicket keep. His keeping lifted the team on many occasions and he featured in a number of partnerships with the bat.
Graham Poulsen: The Poulse played a key part in our team this season, playing an all rounders role once again. He featured in many middle order partnerships and did a good job with the ball.
Steve Wheway: Steve played some important innings at various stages throughout the season but none better than the highest partnership of 92 with his brother to set up a win chasing 250 against Parra L.C. where niceties were at a minimum. He fielded soundly at his own mid off position.
Gary Creighton: Gazz was used as a third opener batting at three, where he wore the bowling down and steadied the ship if required, he also fielded well and has plenty of encouragement for his team mates. He even fielded with a broken arm one week.
Adam Dalton: Cliffy opened the batting with Ken for most of the season, where he likes to go after the bowling from ball one ... and that does aggravate most opening bowlers. Cliffy took three of the best catches you'll ever see as well.
Peter Zuvela: Pete also another debutant with good hands in the field, taking some very tidy catches. He likes batting at no.11 but certainly is better than that. He held on in a memorable last wicket partnership of 20 to win a run chase. He also showed a lot of promise.
Andrew Gray: The bloke had a "Murphy's Law" season with the bat, if someone wasn't taking a blinding catch to dismiss him, an umpire would give a dreadful lbw decision. But he still trooped on regardless and maybe the Gods might be on his side next time. He also took some good catches.
Ed Wouters: Ed's season was over before it started, breaking down with a back injury early in the season which was unfortunate because Ed is our opening bowler and has won the last two team bowling awards, so he would have been involved heavily. I hope it's better soon!
