2003/2004 Report - B7 Grade

Well what more can I say about this team that hasn't already been said in previous years reports. They are continuing to produce high quality cricket and perform above the expectations set by the club, captain and even themselves in some cases.

The team only had 2 losses this season. One being the loss to Norwest by 8 runs and the other being the loss of our team mascot "Will, the ferret". It was no coincidence that these 2 events occurred on the same day. We won the final in a 2-day heart-stopper by 2 runs. The rest of the season was a highlighted with a new player or 2 making their mark, a new team high score and what we think is possible the most number of six's hit by a single player in a PDCA season. All players had a great season and I think the team really moulded together and enjoyed their cricket.

THE TEAM

Jason Currey: Although Jas will probably tell you this season wasn't as good as last year, I think the rest of us would disagree. Jas has cemented himself as a high-class opener and he bats the way a good opener should. Was given the gloves for the season filling his dad's shoes and did so well taking some amazing catches. Was under bowled like many others in the team but when given the ball he always produced wickets. A great season from the VC. Highlight: 73 vs North Parramatta. His class and patience out in the middle was deserved of a ton.

Simon Joyce: Showed himself to be a true all rounder this year. Hit the team's new high score of 143 no and also had an 8/34 against his name with the ball. Hit almost 500 runs and took 19 wickets yet didn't get an award. This man is a phenomenal cricketer with a cricketing brain that can always be picked when asking for a different option. Highlight: 143 no v Seven Hills. It was a great display of batting; I'm still to this day regretting declaring on him.

Andrew Joyce: Finally this season we saw Andrew's batting potential emerge. After telling everyone he scored the first ton in the family we were beginning to doubt the truth in the tale, but he proved us wrong. His bowling continued to improve and he became a strike force in the team. I think he really enjoyed his cricket this season. Highlight: 121 no vs Greystanes. First game of the season and he's promoted to opener due to a player shortage. He then proceeds to carry his bat and produce his highest score for the club.

Terry Joyce: Terry signed up as a reserve to play some cricket with his sons and ended up taking the field in the opening game of the season. He would later go on to only play one more game with us and in the process, tear his Achilles heal. Terry is a great cricketer (like all Joyce's) and showed a few of the boys a thing or 2. We do hope he will return next season (PLEASE MRS JOYCE!!!) but if he won't, we'll just have to see if his daughter is interested in rolling the arm over. Highlight: 32 v Wenty Leagues. A classy batting display against our grand final opponents that got us out of a potentially disastrous score. Oh yes, and THAT RUNOUT!

Matt Joyce: Matt was another of the Joyce's who signed up as a reserve but due to a few injuries to other players he ended up playing more games than some of the full timers. Player who has great potential that will surface next season now he's used to playing guys 3 and 4 times his age. Enjoyed his batting and got us out of a few tight situations in the process. Great first season in seniors from Baby Joyce. Highlight: 20 v Wenty Leagues. Batted with his dad and produced a very entertaining display of big hitting.

Simon Rogers: Would have to take home the most improved trophy this year, along with the most unlucky bowler trophy. His batting continued from where it left off in last season's semi and he was a deserved winner of the batting award, averaging over 50 runs an hour. His bowling was top shelf and at times unplayable by opposing batsmen. With figures like 0/5 off 6 and 1/6 off 5, he was just too good for the batsmen. Look to see this man collect more wickets next season as we hit a higher grade. Highlight: 76 no v Greystanes. It was a 6-a-thon between Simey and Ads that saw them put on almost 70 runs in under half an hour. He was unlucky to not make it to 3 figures.

Adam Shearman: New player to the team who proved to be worth his weight in gold. A great batter with a huge hit. Hit 340 runs this season of which 120 of them were in 6's and was another who averaged over 50 runs an hour. Takes a lot of heart into every game as is always there to gee the boys up. A great set of hands, this man slipped right into this team and we hope he's with us for many years to come. Highlight: 94 vs North Parramatta. Deserved a ton and was very unlucky not to get it. Big hitting at its best.

Sacha Hilbrink: Sach again had a phenomenal season with the ball. The amount of inswing this man can produce is unexplainable. Had outstanding figures throughout the season like 6/21, 5/28 and 7/20. He also produced his second hat-trick in 3 seasons. Batting when given chances was good but like all tailenders was usually in there to either make quick runs or bat all day. Highlight: 7/20 v Wenty Leagues. He had the eventually grand finalists mesmerised. It was an amazing spell.

Mark Griggs: Griggsy had a decent season. Had a few high 30's that he probably wished made it to 50's. His batting this year was much more controlled. He played with a level head and waited more for his shots. He was rewarded towards the end of the season with a great 107 in a 194 run partnership with Joycey. His fielding continued to be first class and this helped him enjoy his cricket more. A great season from the dread-locked assign. Highlight: 107 vs Seven Hills a great knock, patient yet aggressive. Pure batting class.

Chris Hush: Hushys will tell you he wants to forget everything that happened this season up until the final. His season with the bat was well down on last year and he just kept failing to make starts. This was what amazed us about his final's appearance. On the verge of being left out of the final he was included due to previously missed finals. He ended up winning us the final by grinding out 2 of the best innings seen by the lanky boy in a few years and putting the final out of Wenty's reach. He also doubled his total runs for the season in that game alone. There's talent in the cricket and when it appears, it's a treat to watch. Highlight: 22 and 20 v Wenty Leagues. His 2 patient innings saved us from what would have been a devastating loss. He looked solid at the crease the whole weekend and was enjoying his cricket.

Jono Bocking: Jono's season was mixed mainly due to the fact that he went overseas and missed exactly half of the season. His batting was again solid and probably better than the last few years. He was under bowled again, but when bowled he showed more fire and aggression than in previous seasons. His fielding as always was top notch. This man seems to have the uncanny ability of stopping the seemingly unstoppable. Good cricketer who's fielding prowess was missed during his absence. Highlight: 21 no v Wenty Leagues. Came in during the final's 2nd innings and put the game beyond their reach. Hit the flattest 6 I've ever seen in the process.

Dave Massingham: Scruffy's season was full of ups and downs. His fielding this season was well up and he became more vocal in the process. His batting was a bit down on last year however as some freaky dismissals got the better of him. Experimented with batting lower down the order, which produced some great results. The talent is there for Dave, he just needs a bit of luck on his side. Still a top season from the cricketing encyclopaedia. Highlight: 23 v Westmead. An out of character aggressive innings from Dave that managed to get both him and the spectators pumping.

Jeremy Kerrigan: Keggs is the most laid back cricketer you will ever meet. He has a good set of hands and a keen eye. All that's left for Keggs to learn now in cricket is the infamous "Block Shot". Had some great big hitting innings when promoted up the order and took what may have been the catch of the season in the final. An easy going cricket that can see the lighter side of any situation and always lighten a dull mood. An asset to the team. Highlight: 30 v Seven Hills, After having Sach beg for his promotion up the order he was granted a raise and produced an entertaining big hitting display that even had Ads speechless. Innings came complete with ball by ball commentary from Sach.

Pat Mamo: Learnt a lot from his first full season as captain. His bowling was down on last year though a mid-season injury didn't help his cause. Batted down the order and produce some OK displays when the option arose. His keeping improved as did his slips fielding. Will look toward improving his batting next year along with some of his captaining skills. Highlight: 24 no v Wenty Leagues. Highest score of the season came in the final batting out the afternoon to put the final beyond their reach.

Special thanks to Hilton Byrne, Ron Moye, P Fitzgerald and a few of the B3's for filling in for us when needed.

Also special thanks must go to Mama Griggs, The scorer we can't do with out and an asset every team should have.
