About Baulko

A new season and there was an air of excitement, as the team made up of mostly last year's U16 played their first year of senior cricket. On paper the side looked to have plenty of talent. The boys had drafted in an old bloke to be captain and to give them someone to beat in the averages. The season saw us with two outright wins, nine first inning wins and only one first innings loss. Season highlights were numerous. In the batting, a maiden century by Greg McLoughlin (actually his maiden 50!), a magnificent innings of 60 by Michael Perry in the final, an unlucky 93 no by Andrew Wilkins, when he carried his bat and ran out of partners, 76 by Matthew Hardy, 64 by Ben Dooley and a good innings of 56 by Joel Bridgwood. The bowling was magnificent all season - everyone bowled (except the old blokes) and all took wickets - even Hilton! Matthew Hardy's 6/51 was the best, with 5 wicket hauls to Ben Dooley, Michael Perry and Jared Mohr. The team's fielding was an absolute standout. The ground fielding, catching and throwing were brilliant, with Patrick Barclay, Jared Mohr, Matthew Hardy and Ben Dooley amongst the best. So to the semis and we faced Norwest. A good start saw us get to 0/39 before a disastrous collapse saw us tumble to 9/78. But a great 10th wicket partnership of 46 by Patrick Barclay (11) and Troy Higginbotham (19 no) got us to 124 and gave us something to defend. But, with 83 overs to bowl, it was going to need some tight bowling and fielding. And we did, as we kept them under control until the rain came. After a delay of a couple of hours, they needed 70 odd runs in 75 minutes to win. We took wickets regularly to have them 8/75 and 9/95, before a last wicket stand got them to 117. Troy again came to the rescue, bowling the last batsman, with just 7 runs and 10 minutes to spare. Best bowling figures went to Jared Mohr with 5/17. The final pitted us against Hills Barbarians, the only team to beat us during the season. They batted first and our bowlers did well to have them 3/12. They then built some partnerships to finally get to 143, a reasonable total on the slow outfield at Ted Horwood. Eight bowlers were used and they all took wickets, in a good team performance. Greg's run out of their No 9, led to a bit of controversy, but Jared soon assisted the batsman to make his exit. We batted on day 1 and after being 1/10 and 2/32, Ben Dooley and Michael Perry steadied the ship to get us to 100, before Michael fell for a magnificent 60, including a six that landed on the tennis courts. At stumps we were 3/113, with Ben given a life with a dropped chance. Day 2 and the plan was to take no chances as we chased the 31 runs to pass their total. Unfortunately Ben and Greg conspired to see Ben run out for 41. Then Matthew Hardy got a very poor LBW decision and Greg was caught and bowled and we were 6/131. A few nerves in the shed, but Will and Jared were the men of the hour and got us past their total, before Jared fell with the score on 151. Finally, they conceded, with Will and Troy at the crease and the premiership was ours! THE TEAM Michael Perry: Highest score: 60, Best bowling: 5/13, Catches: 4. A new arrival to the club, from over the Tasman, Michael is hard hitting opening batsmen and a very handy medium pace bowler. He was instrumental in our final victory, with a great innings. A good fieldsman. Andrew Wilkins: Highest score: 93 no, Best bowling: 2/15, Catches: 5. Andrew had a good season and was unlucky not to score a century, when left stranded after carrying his bat. A solid batsman, with sound technique, he is also a useful spin bowler and a good slips fieldsman. Ben Dooley: Highest score: 64, Best bowling: 5/10, Catches: 11. Our standout pace bowler, who at times was unplayable. Also a class batsman, who always looked the goods and got a number of scores from 30 to 60, without making a century. A good fieldsman, with a strong arm. Matthew Hardy: Highest score: 76, Best bowling: 6/51, Catches: 13. Matthew had an outstanding all round season - 36 wickets, 242 runs and 13 catches. It was great to see him back to his best and enjoying his cricket. A magnificent outfielder and a great team player. Greg McLoughlin: Highest score: 115 no, Best bowling: 3/17, Catches: 4+1S. The highlight of the year for Greg was scoring his maiden century, in fact his maiden 50. Did not need to bowl too much, but did well when called into the attack. A solid fieldsman. Jared Mohr: Highest score: 28, Best bowling: 5/17, Catches: 9. When the going gets tough, Hero is the man you want. Always valued his wicket highly and his bowling was great. An outstanding fieldsman and another great team player. Joel Bridgwood: Highest Score: 56, Best bowling: 3/30, Catches: 17. Our skipper in the finals, Joel led the side well. He did a Gilchrist by keeping and then opening the batting. A very fine keeper and an excellent batsman. Well done Joel and good to see you come over from the dark side. Patrick Barclay: Highest Score: 22, Best bowling: 1/1, Catches: 3. Patrick is a team player. Showed some form with the willow and the ball, but his fielding was a strong point. A good arm and always talking up the boys. Loves to butter up the "coach". William Cartwright: Highest Score: 30, Best bowling: 2/13, Catches: 7. A very solid season by Will. Some good innings and a very promising season with the ball, backed up by some great close in fielding. Good to get another premiership cap to add to his junior collection. James Thomson: Highest Score: 27, Best bowling: 3/9, Catches: 5. James generally opened the bowling and was very quick at times, although a back injury limited his bowling. A batsman with a very good technique. Very quick in the field. Daniel Richardson: Highest Score: 31, Best bowling: 2/17, Catches: 1+1S. Another Kiwi, who joined Baulko this year. Did not play as many games as most, but showed good skill with the bat. Opened early season and was a big hitter. Handy bowler and got a good stumping when he kept. Graeme Hardy: Highest Score: 2, Best bowling: DNB, Catches: 0. Graeme was a great support to me and to boys in general. Always willing to fill in when asked. Season highlight was hanging around with Greg when on his way to his ton. Thanks for all your help Graeme. Peter McLoughlin: Highest Score: 9 no, Best bowling: DNB, Catches: 4. A tough season for an old bloke who can't really bat, has only ever bowled 5 balls and tries hard to look good in the field (hard in this team). Season highlight - batting at 11 and staying with Greg while he got the 20 runs needed for his century. Thank you to those who filled in for us during the season - Troy Higginbotham, Simon Smith, Hilton Byrne, Graham Baker, Michael Delfino and Rod Farlow. Congratulations to the boys on a great season. It was an honour to captain the team, in name at least. I have had a most enjoyable season. With the talent in the team, hopefully they will aim to play for Baulko in the highest grades in the years to come. To those who are leaving to play at higher levels, best of luck and hopefully we will see you back one day.
