President's Report - 2003/2004

It is with some regret that I present my final President's Report. There comes a time when all organisations, whether they be in business or sport, need an injection of new blood and ideas in order to continue to thrive.

This was yet another successful season for the Club, which saw a slight decrease in numbers, with 30 teams taking the field. This comprised 15 junior and 15 senior teams. Despite this decrease, we remain the largest club in the Parramatta District Cricket Association.

We had 14 teams qualify for the semi finals with eight senior sides and six junior sides. There were 7 minor premiers - B7, B8, B9 and B14 in the seniors and 12/1 (undefeated), 13/1, 14/1 in the juniors. After the semi-finals, we had 9 teams playing for the Premiership. Commiserations to the B6, B8 and 11/1 teams who all put up a great fight on the day but unfortunately came second. Congratulations to the teams who prevailed on the day. I congratulate the 6 premiers for season 2003/2004, the 12/1, 13/1, 14/1, B5, B7 and B9.

This number of premierships meant that we could not fit them all onto the Honour Board presented by the Horwood Family, so the committee decided to rework the Board, the result of which can now be seen in the downstairs area. We now have enough space to accommodate 300 premiers, and with the current count being 118, the challenge is there for the coming seasons to try and fill it up again.

We once again ran the Have-A-Go program with nearly 70 5 to 8 year olds attending. After the searing heat of the previous season we moved the time slot to the slightly cooler Friday evenings, which seemed to prove a success. A highlight for this next generation of cricketers was that they invited to demonstrate their skills on the hallowed turf of The Sydney Cricket Ground before 35,000 fans during the lunch break of the second day of the Australia/India Test Match. This was thrill for all those involved and will be something they will not forget. They also had the opportunity to play on Bankstown Oval during a Women's cricket match.

The Club continues in its efforts to provide the best playing and practice facilities for its players. Following the concreting of the Crestwood nets at the end of the previous season, new Astroturf was laid there during the off season, being used for the first time during pre-season practice. The next improvement is the construction of an Astroturf wicket in the flood retention basin at Charles McLaughlin. As this basin is for the 1 in a 100-year storm, I doubt we will lose much playing time there, although no one would mind with the current drought conditions. We are hopeful of commencing construction in mid August with the wicket being ready by the start of next season. With this area being in close proximity to houses, we will only be using it for the younger junior teams. As this is a costly exercise, we are hopeful of receiving a grant from the Department of Sport and Recreation to help offset the cost. We are also planning to widen the doors in the Amenity Block at Charles McLaughlin to enable the use of a trolley to transport the covers to and from the turf wicket. I would like to thank the Baulkham Hills Shire Council for their assistance in conducting these current and past ground improvements.

The standard of the playing surface on most fields continues to be a concern. This situation will not improve until Council staff realise that not only is long grass not suitable for cricket, but by encouraging this type of growth, the grass does not mat together properly during the growing season, thus providing a better and more durable surface for both summer and winter sporting codes.

On the representative scene we were once again prominent. There were 15 juniors and 4 seniors selected to represent the PDCA in the various Inter Association Shield competitions. Unfortunately, none of the junior teams reached the semi final stage, however the seniors were involved in the winning Under 19 Durham Shield competition.

On the financial side, the Club remains in a healthy position. This has been achieved through great support in our major fund raising activities, namely the Melbourne Cup trifecta, the Trivia Night, the 2 canteens and the Saturday Night Meat Raffle. On behalf of the committee, I would like to thank those who organised and ran these events and those who so enthusiastically supported them.

One of the problems facing the club over the years has been the difficulty in holding pre season practice for the juniors on Saturdays, with so many being unable to attend to due involvement in the final weeks of their winter sport. The decision to move these practices to Sundays was well received and proved a great success.

After being washed out the 2 previous seasons, the Annual Bankstown Challenge was held on a day with temperatures soaring over 40 degrees. For the record it was one win for the Seniors and a loss to the Under 11s. We look forward to travelling to Bankstown next season when it is their turn to host the games.

The committee has decided to implement a scheme to recognise those players and officials who have provided years of continuous service to the Club. It was hoped to have this in place for this weekend, but we decided to re-check the figures before implementing the scheme.

I would like to mention that our long serving Secretary, Peter Touzel is standing down, to follow a career in Netball administration. I wish to thank him for all his efforts over the years and wish him well in his endeavours.

I would like to thank all senior captains, vice captains, junior coaches and managers and all those who helped in the smooth running of the club during the last season. I would also like to thank the Baulkham Hills Sports Club for their continued support both financially and in providing meeting and function facilities during the year. I would also like to especially thank the Management Committee for all their hard work in running this Club.

Finally, congratulations to the following players who were the best in their individual grades:
