Senior Registrar's Report - 2003/2004

Another season has drawn to a close and as usual the Senior teams excelled in this year's competition. We started the season with 15 teams, with 8 teams making it to the semi-finals: B4, B5, B6, B7, B8, B9, B12 and B14. Unfortunately, B4, B12 and B14 did not go on further, which left us with 5 senior teams in the Final. Congratulations to B5, B7 and B9 for winning the Final and to B6 and B8 for reaching the Final.

In total we registered 228 senior players in 15 teams, our grading was fairly spot on but being forced to have an A Grade side and a C Grade side was most probably our biggest hurdles as both teams were really never in the same leagues as their opponents. Care will need to be taken next season that we get the right mix of players to ensure that we have competitive sides to show the true strength of Baulkham Hills. Rest assured that a Club of our side will be required to fill A and C Grade sides. Our aim is to ensure both of these sides are loaded with players who are capable of competing at these levels. I ask all players to consider this when selections start for next season.

As with each year there were some disappointing aspects, not least was the apathy of some teams' failure to supply umpires, either during the home and away series or the finals. As an example, of the 7 teams (82 registered players) who did not make the finals, only two players umpired for the semi finals. It was left to a non-player to umpire a semi final at the expense of not having anyone to run the canteen for our own teams in the afternoon. This attitude does not bode well for the name of our Club. Players are asked to support the Club, as we, as your committee, support you.

On a brighter note, our usual events occurred throughout the year the first being the Senior Double Wicket. Although poorly attended, those who did turn up had a grand day. Many a player quenched their thirst and hunger with the food and drink supplied by the Club. The standard of play was outstanding with some big hitting by some of the players.

The Bankstown Challenge was also a huge success with Baulkham Hills winning the Seniors' challenge. This day was one for the heat record books and although our mighty captain, Malcolm Currey won the toss and elected to bat, many, in hindsight, thought this to be the wrong call, as the heat intensified by mid afternoon and the spirit waned in some of the younger players. A big thank you to Neil Boyle and Rick Thomas for their sterling effort at the BBQ, Leigh Griggs for scoring and Peter McLoughlin for umpiring. A special thanks to all the players who persevered in the stifling heat and made the Bankstown team feel at home.

Our thoughts must now turn towards the next season, and as mentioned earlier, selecting competitive sides in all grades. Our first aim is to ensure that we have the right mix of experience and youth in our A and C Grades. And a mechanism to ensure they are supported throughout the season. We may well say that they are just two of the teams in our Club, but these are teams we MUST fill, the rest of our teams we can grade accordingly. As such, I ask each and every one of the senior players to seriously consider the options of playing in one of these two grades. And if selected by the Grading Committee you will understand why we considered you. Until next season, have a great break.
