2004/2005 Report - Under 13/2

Well what a great year we had again this year. It was our second year together with a couple of new players making an excellent contribution to the team. We went one step closer to that elusive grand final after missing out on the semi-finals by only one point last year.

The team really knew how to put away the opposition once they got on top, resulting in 3 outright wins for the year and several very close matches against the eventual premiers Pendle Hill Colts "B". Once we got the opportunity to get into the semi-finals, we produced an excellent effort only to go down in a real nail-biter!

Well done team, you deserved your place as semi-finalists and next year you are capable of going all the way. A special thanks needs to go to Margaret Daines and Joe Vassallo who helped out with the scoring all year (keep those new pencils sharp for next year guys!!!).

Also thanks to Peter Brown who took on a couple of training sessions at short notice during the year. Again a big thank you to Chris Luther who managed the team and helped with the umpiring out on the field. Thanks mate for your efforts as always.

Last but not least, a big thank you to all the parents who made the effort to stay and watch their children compete in a team environment. I am sure that they appreciate your support as I did throughout the year. Well done to all. Anyway let's give you a bit of background on each of our fantastic players.

Adam Luther - What a great year this young man had. He took on the responsibility of opening the batting and opening the bowling for the team. Adam's batting was simply outstanding and deserving of the batting award. His sweep and pull shots were a delight to watch. It was only fatigue from batting so long that saw him lose his wicket. Solid in defence and lethal in attack. Now with the ball in his left hand, Adam formed an excellent bowling attack with Kieran with his massive in-swingers. The team never had to wait long before a wicket fell. The most memorable moment for Adam, his teammates, coach and parents was his final ball wicket to pick up our third outright win of the year. Even bigger things to come next year.

Kieran Houlahan - Another player who really achieved excellence this year, both with the bat, ball and in the field. Kieran would often come in to bat at No 4 and would usually find his mate Adam still at the wicket. Now when these two boys came to the wicket they would demoralise the opposition with their fast running between wickets. The opposition could not afford to blink otherwise these guys would be off. Kieran's bowling improved this year immensely. His control of his out-swingers was a joy to watch. His shouts for LBW were also something to behold!! Another player who will really cause some damage next year.

Matthew Vassallo - Matthew was one of our most improved players this year. His fielding in the mid-off position was faultless, along with his enthusiasm for the game. Matthew's bowling was the most pleasing aspect taking some great wickets when brought into the attack. Often Matt would claim his wickets generally in his first or second over of bowling. It was simply outstanding stuff to see a young man rewarded for his efforts. Watching Matt put in such a lot of practice in the nets with the bat, I can't help but think some runs will flow from his bat next year.

Nelson Brown - Now this boy can really talk it up both on and off the field! Nels has no problems in letting the opposition know how he thinks they are going, generally all good hearted stuff. Now this lad has shown potential with the bat all year when practising in the nets but just couldn't quite get it together on match day until semi-final day when Pendle Hill thought they had broken through our batting order, Nelson came out and blasted them around the park for 8 great runs. This is another young man ready to step up to the plate next year.

Mason Hemmings - Mace is known to our team as "Mr. Casual"! His demeanour never waivered not matter what the circumstances were when he came into bat. Mace shows real talent with the bat once his confidence is up and with the ball in his hand, he destroys any opposition. Mace made the perfect first change bowler, with his slow run up, but deceiving pace once he let those big shoulders go. One of the best catchers of a cricket ball that I have seen in such a young man. Can't wait to see him go at it again next year.

Daniel Gibb - Daniel is Mr. Consistent of the team. He always gave a 110% effort every week out in the field. There are two memorable moments during the year that sums up Daniel's commitment to want to do his best. The first was against Wenty Waratahs and the team was pushing for another outright win, but Wenty was digging in until their batsmen hit a solid shot down to deep mid-off. The ball was heading straight for Daniel and instead of taking cover, Dan took the most spectacular catch which helped the team achieve its outright victory on the day. It was great to see the team run to congratulate him on a great effort. The other was with the bat in achieving 7 not out against Kellyville. A great team player and one you know will always be there.

Aleem Khan - Aleem was one of our top end batsmen and whilst he did get amongst the runs every week, his contributions often helped the team secure either a first innings win or an outright. His work behind the stumps was excellent and proved to be a real team player and a pleasure to coach. I am sure that Aleem will be a force to be reckoned with next year with the bat and his bowling only continues to improve. A great person to have in any team.

Cameron Daines - Now this boy has the largest repertoire of balls when he bowls that I will ever see. One thing is for sure that the opposition batsmen will never know what is coming next!! You can't help but like Cam for his humour and talent that he shows out on the field. His batting improved immensely this year with a good half-century and a series of solid starts. Cameron will make an excellent top end batsman next year with a little more patience with his shot selection.

Tiarne Kleyn - Tiarne was a new member to our team this year and didn't she make an impact. Firstly it was just her presence that kept the boys in line! Secondly her attitude and manner was exceptional. For a person who was playing her first year of competition cricket, I will struggle to find a young lady with so much natural talent, particularly with the ball in her hands. Tiarne has one of the most graceful and technically sound bowling actions that I have seen and possesses a great set of hands. She managed to take some superb catches during the year in her standard mid-on and square leg positions. I can't wait to see her back again next year to see how much she will improve.

Robert Slater - Rob was yet another real improver this year both with the bat and the ball. With a slight change to his bowling action, Rob became a great partner with Mason taking over from Adam and Kieran as the first change bowler. His fielding at point was simply outstanding, taking some of the best catches of the year. Rob's batting also improved to contribute as a real all-rounder. This year Rob gained some real confidence with the bat and will make a real impact again next year. Great job as joint captain for our semi-final match.

Joel Celnikier - Joel really came of age this year for the team. His general fielding was nothing short of exceptional. Joel took some great catches, saved a stack of runs by cutting off certain boundaries and contributed to a number of run-outs with great return throws over the stumps. His batting also continued to improve by staying out their with good defence and always thinking of his partner who was finding the middle of the bat. Many times Joel was a member of double figure partnership at the tail end of the batting order, frustrating the opposition continually. Joel's bowling improved out of sight. With a good straight arm, Joel took a number of wickets to clean up the tail on a number of occasions. His improvement this year was a pleasure to watch.

Chiranjeev Narula - Chiran was the other new member to the team this year and fitted in really well. His fielding at square leg was outstanding. More than once Chiran would take some fantastic catches that many a person would be excused for dropping, but not Chiran!! His medium paced bowling proved the perfect break through for the team just when the opposition looked to be settling in. His batting effort against Winston Hills when the team was under pressure was a memorable one. Chiran hit out at the ball and came away with 20 superb runs. Looking forward to seeing Chiran again next year. Well done mate.

Stuart Ainscough - Stu was a real character of the team in this his first year of cricket. I think this game is a bit too slow for Stu, but he stuck at it (or his Mum stuck at it!!) and made a valuable contribution to the team. After being asked at least 10 times at each training session and after every 3 overs on game day, "Hey Russ - what's the time?" I know what Stu needs for Christmas.
