2004/2005 Report - A Grade

Wow...what a season! To sum up the season in a few words would be "exceeding expectations....with a little help". The expectations we exceeded were mainly our own. Finishing 4th and playing in an A Grade Semi was probably the last thing in our minds in September! The "little help" came from the extra 13 players to our squad of 14. To those of you who played above their grade, thank you. You will get a couple more opportunities next season to play "A's" with 2 bucks parties and weddings already planned for next season.

This seasons squad was made up predominantly of last seasons A Reserves with the addition of last seasons "A's", Chris Springall, Nick Connellan and Steve Sarlog to "the Kookas". Here is season 2004/05.

Round 1 was against Hills Barbarians, losing by 3 wickets (S Kalia 48). Next game was versus Wenty Leagues with mother nature calling it a draw on week 2 (C Springall 38 & J Thompson 37). Games 3 & 4 were the bucks party & weddings of Craig Sinclair & Jason Thompson. Game 3 had 7 of our usual squad missing against Guildford Leagues. Despite losing on first innings, the boys made a miraculous come back to win outright. (J Walters 47, T Hession 31no and match bowling figures of 5/29 together with N Connellan 5/38 and second innings figures of 3/9 for S Joyce). Game 4 at Kings Langley had 5 regulars out, defeating Kings Langley by 5 wickets. (C North 57, C Springall 46, N Connellan 4/45, A Denlow 3/15 & S Kalia 5 catches in the field).

Round 5 against Seven Hills was a 53 run loss (C North 64) with round 6 our first win together as a full squad, beating Wenty Waratahs by 18 runs (S Kalia 34 & 3/28 & D Cope 3/19). A second innings commenced with C North 80 & C Springall 50 putting the result beyond doubt. Our round 7 game figured an unusual result...a tie! Both Greystanes and ourselves were all out for 130. We batted first and was all out at 4pm (S Kalia 51) and they ended the day 3/89. Day 2 we dug deep to take the remaining 7 wickets for 41 runs, tying the match (R Cope 4/44). Their 130 included a "dubious" run, one that no other team in the competition would have taken. Match 8 was the first of the one dayers against Hills Barbars and we managed 8/176 off our 42 overs (C Springall 35 & J Thompson 30). We started poorly with 25 runs going off David Cope's first 2 overs. His next 8 overs were much better, ending up with 6/44 in total including 3 wickets in 4 balls, Barbars all out for 160, even though we did have them 8/88. 3 points off the lead at Christmas...who would have thought!!

We must have had too much Christmas cheer during the break, losing the next 4 matches. Despite losses to Wenty Leagues by 2 wickets (S Kalia 43, P Micali 37 & R Cope 3/32), Guildford Leagues by 3 wickets (J Thompson 75 including 7 sixes and 4 fours & R Cope 4/36), Kings Langley by 3 wickets (G Fewell 42 & N Connellan 3/29) and Seven Hills by 76 runs (S Kalia 4/37), we were still in the four! Results from other teams below us had been favourable but they were starting to catch up.

We knew the last 2 games were must win. We jumped the first hurdle against Waratahs by 31 runs (J Thompson 46, G Fewell 4/33 & P Micali 3/24) and the second against Greystanes, who were coming 5th, beating them by 42 runs (C North 97, desperately unlucky not to get a ton! & G Fewell 5/47).

Off to McCredie for the semi!!

We started with no luck, losing Glenn Fewell, Nick Connellan & Craig Sinclair before a ball was bowled. Our bowling stocks were low and Guildford Leagues capitalised, reaching a massive 6/362. In reply, we could only manage 158 (C North 51). Never mind, there is always next season!

This seasons batting honours deservedly go to Chris North with 497 runs @ 36. Other figures of note were Chris Springall 303 @ 21, Sumit Kalia 251 @ 17 and Jason Thompson 243 @ 22.

The bowling honours were taken out by Nick Connellan with 27 wickets at a miserly average of 12 - well done Nick! Other mentions go to Richard Cope with 20 @ 23, Sumit Kalia 18 @ 20, David Cope 15 @ 21 and Glenn Fewell who only played 5 games with 12 wickets @ 14. Hopefully Glenn will be available for a few more games next season.

The fielding award goes to Sumit Kalia with 12 catches, not bad for a non "keeper". This included 5 outfield catches in 1 game! A close second was Chris Springall with 10 catches.

Well, apart from the semi and a later round game against Seven Hills, we were always competitive, dispelling our own visions of chasing leather, game after game. We deserved our 4th spot and hope to improve on that next season. See you then!

The 12th man.
