2004/2005 Report - B9 Grade

On paper, this was a disappointing season for the B9's. We had an impressive team, but couldn't get near the wins we should have, and missed out on the semi's.

However, the whole team should know that it had the potential to beat any team in the competition, and we will realize that potential next season. The most important thing at this level was the friendship and good team spirit that we all experienced, which made the season enjoyable despite some disappointments. When our performances match our potential, the team will be the total package.

We started strong, with a convincing win in the first round. However, our batting in particular lacked consistency throughout the season, particularly in the first innings. We fought hard on several occasions, and were left looking back on numerous games thinking, "if only we'd scored 10 more runs, or taken that one last wicket". It was a bad luck season, but one which we can learn from, and improve upon, so that luck is no longer a factor.

There were some good batting performances however, with Matt and Jimmy opening their accounts in the first game, and Goony and Wetta showing off some of the most dominant batting you will ever see, treating the bowlers with disdain.

Whitey again led the way with the ball, but he received good support from Wetta, Jimmy, Matt and Andrew. The bowling and fielding was overall quite impressive, often dismissing highly ranked opposition teams for meager totals. But those small totals are often the hardest to chase, and we too often fell short.

Hope to see you all back next season guys, when we do bring it all together and go all the way. Thanks also to Matty for his captaincy, it was his first time and he handled it brilliantly, to Ian for organising us all on numerous occasions, and to Daniel, Sean, Trent and any juniors I've forgotten for helping us out and really contributing to the game when you were there.

Player Profiles

Matthew Bracken (Captain) - In his first year as Captain, Matt lead from the front with some big batting performances. His performance in the field was, as per usual, first class, and he also contributed with some valuable wickets from his pace bowling.

Ashish Ahluwalia - Ashish had an interrupted season, but definitely showed his potential, particularly in taking three wickets in an over, and possessing one of the best economy rates in the team.

Ian Chatman - Age does not weary him, as the senior Chatman showed the young'uns how it's done. Ian was effective again in breaking important partnerships, active in the field, and showing improvement with the bat.

James Chatman - Jimmy again dominated the votes for the fielding award, his spectacular efforts in taking wickets and saving runs in the field noticed by all. Despite some good early innings, it wasn't his best season with the bat, but he made up for it with his bowling, particularly when he got a shot at the new ball.

Jeremy Daniel - He may not have Jimmy's energy in the field, but some of his catches at mid on/mid off were just as spectacular. Jeremy also showed promise as an opening batsman, with some solid defense and a good array of shots. But he's hiding his bowling talent - look for this man to be the leading wicket-taker for 05/06.

Martin Daniel - the senior Daniel brother is a little more aggressive with the bat, and often raised the ire of the opposition with his booming drives, cuts and pulls. Martin also bowled some effective medium pace, and dominated the gully position, cutting off countless runs.

Shehan Goonesekera - Goony impressed with his big and clean hitting, often punishing entire bowling attacks. His keeping was also from the top shelf, which was a great service to the bowlers. Just don't let him in the outfield.

Chris Jones - Chris was also keeper for the team, which was a great luxury. He was sharp behind the stumps and with the bat, showing the signs of a batsman with great technique.

Andrew Mahony - was the reason the B9's required twice as many balls as any other team, but not in a good way. His spin bowling, whilst often ending in the creek also ended in some useful wickets. Enthusiastic and talkative in the field, but still a bunny with the bat.

John Vijayaraj - John's first season with the team started slow but definitely heated up, as he played a useful role in several partnerships, and showed his prowess in the field. Will definitely make an impact next season.

Adrian Wettasinghe - Adrian took a short time to reclaim his old form. His pace bowling proved dangerous, and complimented Whitey's, but he was most impressive with the bat, amassing plenty of runs, including three big hitting partnerships with Goony.

Chris White - Never fails to disappoint with the ball, and again, despite niggling shoulder injuries, was our strike bowler and major wicket-taker. Was particularly effective in breaking partnerships or cleaning teams up in his second spell, and, as always, made useful contributions with the bat and in the field.
