2005/2006 Report - A Reserve Grade

Grand finalists after moving up 4 grades. Most teams would be happy with that but you can't help but feel a little disappointed. I can say with confidence that without the turf pitch bias brought on by the inclement weather in grand final week, we would have had a new hat this year.

This team is still developing and learning each others games so I am hoping that we can improve and go one step further next year and take the title. Here are the usual suspects in order of career earnings.

Robert "Mr. Cricket" Simpson - The consummate professional and the first man I've seen with more warm up exercises than Oz Aerobics. A real class act and is the man to look for if we are after a big innings. Bobby got plenty of crook decisions this year and suffered a broken finger mid-season. These were the only two things that kept his batting average below 40. Led the team admirably in the finals series and his bowling is much under-rated and under-used. Racing below his class here, expected to hit his straps next season after a few starts. Always amongst the favourites.

Andrew "The Pitts" Pittman - About as fashionable as a Hypercolour T-shirt, it's hard to tell if Pitts was happy with his season or not. I can say that the rest of us were very happy and he is a welcome addition to the team. Without his straight bat we would not have been a chance of making the semi finals and would have been embarrassed on many an occasion. He opened the innings all year and provided the rock type display that held our batting order together. A dour stayer that will plod all day. Look for him in the longer races.

Nathan "Metro" Blake - Questions were asked when he slid head first under the pitch covers chasing a stationary ball in the outfield in his first game. As the season wore on he proved to be an invaluable member of the team, leading the bowling attack and ripping the heart out of many batting orders with his accurate genuine pace. Stole the show with a hard hitting half century in the last game of the season consistently piercing 10 metre gaps on the boundary. Showy galloper with speed to burn, Group One horse with claims.

Trent "Bag" Hession - Plenty of starts with the bat but couldn't convert them into a big score. Picked up the odd lucky wicket with the ball and held on to a few easy catches. Expect more, I know I will. Lightly framed sprinter that saves his best for the big races.

Glenn "Ritchie" Kennaway - Was legless in his first game after a tigers win, was legless in his second game after ripping his knee apart. It is no coincidence that when GK plays, we win. This is the bloke that you hope is walking to the crease to join you when the pressure is on. Confidence is always the key to his batting as there is no doubting his ability. Won us the game with his partner in crime that got us into the semis. His one liners are second to none. Lightly raced galloper that was sent to the paddocks mid season after pulling up lame, vet report revealed fetlock injury.

John "J-Dub" Walters - Work commitments had a heavy influence on J-Dub's season and I'm working at the moment to get him fired for next year. He was not settled all year with the bat in his hands but still handled the gloves well taking 16 catches, even if he hates doing the keeping. Also did the dirty work getting a team together every week. A quick heads up to opposing teams, I have this funny feeling that next year may be very big with the bat for J-Dub, don't say I didn't warn you. Has the talent to win a Group One race, no doubt that bigger things are to come.

Nick "Little Nicky" Connellan - Provided his renowned disappearing act in the semi final sending a shock wave through the team. An up and down season for Little Nicky with both bat and ball. Moments of brilliance were evident highlighted by the left handed hook shot to the boundary. Promises to stand on the other side of the bat next year giving us a left-hander in the middle order. Did the difficult job of leading this team throughout the year. Old stager that is asked to carry a heavy weight here. Will always be in the finish.

Glenn "Mulva" Mulvaney - After reports that Mulva wasn't getting enough bowling, he took matters into his own hands with the longest over of the season, an 11 ball cracker. This is a bloke that you can never right off as he will always perform at a higher level than expected. His efforts in the field are without pier. 100%, every ball, every day, without question. He also showed the uncanny Nostrodamous ability to call a wicket. Under-rated galloper that can race at all levels. However, he can get spooked in the mounting yard.

Simon "Teflon" Smith - Says nothing and has the ability to do everything. Teflon has the Mark Waugh attitude and is more laid back than a Lazy Boy recliner. Showed his talent smashing a fifty in the opening match, promising a big year. A safe pair of hands in the outfield as long as he hasn't had a big night the evening before the game. Unpredictable galloper. Each way claims.

Michael "The Lip" Delfino - Never short of a word, if only this bloke would hurry up and reach his potential he would challenge Bobby for the batting award. His class with the bat shone in the semi-final with a faultless innings that was a pleasure to watch. Whenever he got a chance, his spin bowling took valuable wickets at an impressive strike rate. Promises so much, expect more from him in the bigger races, definitely a dark horse.

Phil "Philbo" Woods - First season ever that Phil has taken more catches than he has dropped. A typical solid year for Philly with steady runs and wickets. Highlight has to be his season saving innings batting at 11 that got us into the semis. I'll never forget the six over the bowlers head to tie the game and the same shot the next ball to win it. Always the top weight, consistent performer that won't let you down.

David "Top Deck" Byrne - Struggled to crack it this season, even when he was trying to smash a window after he locked his keys in his car. Dave may have had his fingers in too many pies bowling express pace, medium pace, leg spin and off spin all to an expert level. A leg spin average of about 5 may indicate something. I guarantee you that we will win the comp next year if this guy fires, that's how highly he is rated. Highly talented galloper that is yet to dominate a race. Ignore the form guide, a definite chance.

Hilton "Paris" Byrne - A Reserves Fan Club number one ticket holder. Played the occasional game and substituted in the field when required. Who could forget the goiter on his leg after stopping a full blooded drive with his shin. Season disappointment would have to be not scoring another two runs in his only innings to match his son's season batting average. Saturday arvos in summer would not be the same without Hilton around. Companion pony that is only unveiled for one race each season. Untapped talent.

Craig "Wolfman-Scarlet" O'Harae - Wolfman's best contribution this year was a newborn baby, however he had to wait for a full moon for the birth. A pleasure to play cricket with and an all round top bloke. Experienced galloper with limited racing this season. Needs consistent starts to show true potential.

Mark "Hoges" Hogan - Prepared a new bat in the off-season with meticulous craftsmanship only proceeding to spoon catches to the infield in his traditional style. You gotta love his work. Only a few starts this season and has claims at long odds. Blame cannot be put on the farrier this year.

Justin "Sal" Field - A one-game wonder. His presence was missed both on and off the field. Looks to be moving towards stud, let's hope he hasn't run his last race.

Jen "Books" Byrne - Jen had one game off all year and the opposition proceeded to destroy her painstakingly maintained scorebook. Teams don't function properly without people like Jen. She scored for us all season and sat through all the highs and the lows. Her contribution to this team is of the highest value and we appreciate her efforts immensely. Maintains form guides with aplomb.
