2005/2006 Report - B8 Grade

The B8's were surprisingly promoted from B11 last season but still performed well in a very close competition. The new player to the team, Brad Green, proved a standout and deservedly won the batting and bowling awards and performed well in the field with seven catches. Baulkham Hills had a good bowling attack and was one of the better fielding teams in the competition. However, our batting was not as strong as other teams.

Greg Leeson had another good season with the bat with 336 runs at 24. He made runs most weeks and was clearly the class batsman in B8. Brad Green's big hitting and cool head under pressure meant that he was able to amass 339 runs at the excellent average of 31. The highlight of the season was our outright victory over Pendle Hill. A record tenth wicket partnership of 161 between Brad Green (159 not out) and Adrian Cox (25) inspired the victory.

As a team, we only reached 200 on two occasions and most of our victories were low scoring affairs. Often these victories were set up by fast new ball bowling. Brad Green (52 wickets at 10) and Adam Fahey (23 wickets at 16) worried most teams. They were well supported by Dane Sparks (27 wickets at 13) who came of age as a first change bowler. Dane's first five wicket haul (6-27 against Pendle Hill) for the club was largely responsible for getting us into the semi-finals.

Other highlights during the season were Greg Leeson's keeping, Adam Fahey's improved batting, Chris Mills's fielding and some spectacular catches by Brad Boyle.

Thank you to Don Crawford, Craig Sparks, Damien Norris, Phil Bromage, Nick Burke and Brad Tolson for filling in during the season.

THE TEAM

Greg Leeson - Captain. Scored 336 runs at 24 with a top score of 75 but will be disappointed not to score more runs. Took some excellent catches behind the stumps and is able to put pressure on the batsmen by standing over the stumps to the medium pace bowlers.

Paul Morris - Vice-captain. Missed a few games this season but contributed well with wickets, runs and catches at various times through the season. His improved defensive technique meant he was able to bat higher in the order and helped stave off outright defeats with dogged batting.

Ian Cox - Oldest member of the team but also one of the keenest. Only player to play every game. Surprising led the bowling averages with two wickets in the last game of the season.

Ian Renton - Third leading runscorer with 183 runs but one of many batsmen to score less runs than in the previous season in B8. Took ten wickets with his offspinners and some good catches at first slip.

Dane Sparks - Had his most successful season yet with his first five wicket haul for the season. Excellent first change inswing bowler who bowls lots of maiden overs. Took some good catches during the season.

Brad Green - Outstanding first season for the club with 339 runs, 52 wickets and 7 catches. Starred in a record tenth wicket stand of 161 with Adrian Cox. Worried all batsman with his pace and bounce.

Brad Boyle - Starred in the field with some brilliant catches during the season. Always looked good with the bat but will be disappointed not to score more than 133 runs.

Adam Fahey - Worried all batsmen with his pace but will be disappointed to finish with only 23 wickets during the season. Most improved batsman of the team. Scored 135 runs at 15. A superb late order innings of 41 not out in ten overs meant we fell just 6 runs short of chasing down 215 against Winston Hills in a one-day game. Was sorely missed in our semi-final loss.

Adrian Cox - Reliable defensive batsmen but can hit out with the bat when required. Scored an invaluable 25 runs in the record ten wicket partnership of 161 against Pendle Hill.

James Attard - Missed several games but acquitted himself well when thrust into the opening role. Bowls accurate left arm orthodox spinners.

Russell Howell - Had an unhappy season with the bat in 2005/06 but he was not the only one to score less runs this season than the previous season. Enthusiastic fielder.

Chris Mills - Missed several games at the end of the season due to injury. Always a star in the field with run-outs and diving catches inspiring the rest of the team. Took a while to get going with the bat but made a valuable 18 not out against Wenty Leagues to help us go from 7-87 to a match winning 145 in a one-day game.
