President's Report - 2005/2006

Well, we are at the end of another busy season and it is an honour to be able to present the President's report to you again. Baulkham Hills is a great club and I am proud to represent it.

This season, the club fielded a total of 30 teams, one more than last year. This was made up of 15 senior and 15 junior teams, which maintained our position as one of the largest clubs in the PDCA. A total of 14 teams, over 50% of the teams who play finals, qualified for the finals, This was down from 16 last year & was made up of 9 senior sides - A Reserve, B4, B5, B6, B7, B8, B9, B15 & C Grade and 5 junior sides - U15/2, U14/1, U14/3, U12/2 & U11/1A. There were 4 minor premiers, B4 & C Grade in seniors and U15/1 & U12/2 in the juniors. After the semis, we had 7 teams playing for premierships. Unfortunately, both senior sides, A Reserve & C Grade and three junior sides, U15/1, U12/2 & U11/1A, finished as runners up. All of the games were reasonably close and the results could have been reversed. The U15/1 & C Grade were the standout teams during the season, but unfortunately, as happens from time to time, they fell short at the last hurdle. The C Grade was a combination of the U15/1, a sprinkling of other juniors and the elder statesmen/fathers. The A Reserve were the success story of the seniors, if you can call a lose a success. They jumped 4 grades from last year, knocked out the first placed team in the semi & then had the opposition struggling in the final. But just when victory looked possible, the turf pitch stopped helping our bowlers and a rather unfortunate run out decision went against us. So close, but yet so far. Well done to the team, let's go one better next year. Congratulations go to our two premiership winning teams, U14/1 & U14/3. The U14/1 certainly had unusual season by their standards. They lost, for the first time, not once, but twice and they also had a tie. And all by their finals opponents Wenty Leagues. So the win was that much sweeter. So they continued their run of premierships, making it four successive titles - U11, U12, U13 & U14. A magnificent performance. Not to be outdone, the U14/3 also won their final. They were comfortable winners and it was a just reward for their performance over the last few years. Well done both teams. So the challenge is there for the seniors. Two successive seasons without a title. Who can step up next season?

We had a number of players represent Parramatta in the NSW Districts Cricket competition. The Martin Shield (Opens) & U13 Gee Shield, well represented by Baulkham Hills players, were successful in winning their competitions. The Gee Shield team, which is coached & managed by Baulkham Hills members Nigel Bertus & Ian Chatman, repeated its success from the previous year in U12. Out of the eight Parramatta teams, Baulkham Hills had 5 coaches, 2 managers & 19 players. We also had 3 representatives in the Parramatta A.W.Green Shield side.

The Have-A-Go program was again run this season. It was held at Charles McLaughlin Reserve on Friday night and around 50 5 to 8 year olds attended. It was well supported and this year a feature of the program was the use of some of our junior players, who hold Level 1 accreditation, as coaches. Thank you to Co-Ordinator Jeff Warland and all those who helped make the program a success - not only the coaches, but the other helpers as well.

The financial side of the club remains healthy. This can be attributed in the main to the fund raising activities of the club. The social committee is to be congratulated on their efforts, with the Trivia Night once again very successful and well supported. The NSW cricket raffle, which replaced the Melbourne Cup Trifecta, was reasonably well supported and gave us around $2000 profit. The canteens were again a great source of income and we thank those who assisted in the running of them. However, on the other side, the meat raffles were not held this year, due to a lack of support. It would be remiss of me not to mention the many hours of work put in by Leigh Griggs. Not only did she run the canteens, but she chaired the social committee. Leigh, we thank you for all the time and hard work you put in the carrying out these duties.

This year saw the re-introduction of the Colts v Seniors game, which hadn't been played since the 92/93 season. It was played as a Twenty/20 match & was narrowly won by the seniors.

On the subject of playing facilities, this season was not without its problems. At the last minute, we lost two nights of training at Yattenden Oval. This was done without any consultation by Council and caused major problems, as we had already allocated practice times for our juniors and seniors, on the basis of previous years lease arrangements. The new Masonic Oval was opened this year and we were unsuccessful in obtaining the lease for it. Council maintenance programs caused major problems this season. The removal of large patches of turf on a Thursday at Ted Horwood and the failure to replace it before the weekend was a major cause of concern for player safety. The placement of large volumes of sand at both North Rocks Park and Ted Horwood Reserve on a Thursday and Crestwood early in he Season, made the surfaces more like a beach than a cricket field and made them unplayable. A junior match had to be abandoned after one day & a senior match had to be transferred at the last moment. With some advance notice, we could have made other arrangements earlier. Whilst we understand the need for maintenance, especially in these times of drought, and the problems with getting contractors on time, we were most disappointed in the lack of consultation by the relevant officers. Despite meeting them, talking on the phone and providing contact details, no consultation with us occurred prior to the works taking place. We assume that these works were planned in advance. On a positive note, we did have a meeting the Mayor and General Manager Services Delivery to discuss the allocation of facilities and maintenance matters. We trust this was of some benefit to both parties. We look forward to better consultation next season.

The annual challenge matches against Bankstown Sports Club were held at Charles McLaughlin this year. The weather was kinder to us this year, although it was still warm. It is pleasing to be able to again report that we were victorious in both the senior & U11 matches. We look forward to next season's games. A planned match against the NSW visually impaired team, as a preparation for their National Championships, was unfortunately washed out in December. A wash out is a rare occurrence these days.

The service awards, introduced last year, continue on and this year Terry Webb was presented with a 40 year award. A truly amazing feat of loyalty to our club!

The Management committee saw some changes this year, with Peter Gunton taking over the role of Treasurer, Ian Chatman stepping up to the role of Junior Secretary and Jeremy Billings joining the committee. The work done by both Peter & Ian in these roles was carried out without a hitch. Someone who does not get credit for their effort is Rick Thomas. Not only is he the Results Steward and Owzat Editor, but he is our webmaster extraordinaire. If you have not looked at the website, I suggest you should go to www.baulkocricket.com.au and spend some time looking around. The hours spent by Rick are enormous. To all the committee, I personally thank you for the time you have put in during the season. I know it is time consuming and that your families suffer. Your efforts are much appreciated. Of course, it was not all plain sailing on the committee this year, with the resignation of Secretary Bob Dokter in November. Bob was a big loss and we thank him for his work over a number of years. Congratulations on making it to your 50th birthday, celebrated with a surprise party at the Sports Club in February.

I would like to thank all the senior captains, and vice captains, the junior coaches and managers and all those who helped make the running of the Club much easier. I would like to thank Baulkham Hills Sports Club and the manager Mr. John Baresic, for their continued support, both financially and with the provision of their facilities during the season.

Congratulations to all the trophy winners and our premiership winning team.

Peter McLoughlin
President
