2006/2007 Report - Under 16/1

The boys finished their junior years with a great season. They finished third in a very high standard competition. There were no easy games, every game was very evenly contested and often came down to the last few overs. Evidence of this closeness was the fact that the boys had two tied games in a row. One tied game is unusual but two is unbelievable. They were consecutive games as well, the second against the eventual premiers. We would have lost both games but for the sensational fighting spirit of all the boys. In the first game, after all seemed lost, the tail batted magnificently to snatch the tie from a seemingly hopeless position. In the second game the eventual premiers appeared to have the game in control until our bowlers showed they could also respond to pressure and took the last few wickets while conceding hardly any runs. The boys played all their games with this intensity, which lead to some excellent cricket being played.

The boys also showed great sportsmanship throughout the season. It was obvious they were playing because they loved the game as well as wanting to win. They were certainly a credit to their club and themselves. The boys' parents also need to be congratulated. Their support and encouragement throughout the season was always there. It made my job as coach so much easier to have such a fantastic bunch of parents. I would especially like to thank Brad Astill who did a great job as manager, everything just happened with a minimum of fuss. I would also like to thank Jill Mihalyka who shared the scoring with Brad. Between them they kept the neatest, most detailed score book I have seen. Thanks so much.

Tim Platt
Coach

The Team

Jacob Astill: He is a cricketer with a lot of potential. He opened the bowling and batting with great results. He showed a lot of mental toughness when it was most needed. His innings in the semi-final was first class.

Adam Bailey: He is a very keen cricketer who didn't get the opportunities he deserved. When he was given the chance in one of our tied games he took it with both hands- he hit two great boundaries and saved us from defeat. He was a very fast outfielder.

Owen Butler: He is a talented all rounder who is good in a crisis. He is a very quick fielder who has a great throwing arm. He is probably the quickest bowler in the team and when he found his line was virtually unplayable.

Matthew Gunton: He is a great team player. His constant chatter certainly lifted the spirits of all the boys. His enthusiasm in the field was infectious. He provided some stiff resistance in the tail. A delight to coach.

Alex Mihalyka: He developed into an excellent top order batsman this year. He played some great innings this year and worked hard on his defensive shots. He was also very good in the field.

Luke McNaught: He was an excellent captain who led the team by example. His bowling continued to improve to the point where I believe he was the best fast bowler in the whole competition. He should have taken many more wickets but he was just too good for the batsmen to get an edge.

Hari Raja: He was beyond any doubt the best spinner in the competition. His main attribute is he is unflappable. It didn't matter what happened his next ball still hit the "spot". Also probably the most improved batsman in the team.

Evan Platt: He is an excellent all rounder who held the team together on many occasions. This year he finally got the runs he deserved. His bowling was first class as usual.

Alan Sala: He is the bowler in the team with the most potential. He has devastating left arm swing. When he learns to control it he will be brilliant. He has a terrific eye for the big hit but needs to pick the right ball rather than every ball.

Chris Slaveiro: He did a great job as one of our two wicketkeepers. He was also a very reliable opening batsman. He provided a solid foil for the other opener. He was very committed in whatever he did.

Andrew Woods: He was our other excellent wicketkeeper. He loved keeping to the spin of Hari and they formed a potent partnership. He has excellent technique with his batting. He also proved to be a most effective slip fieldsman.

Azaan Vhora: He returned to the team this year and played as if he had never left. He had an excellent season both with the bat and ball. He has a lot of ability but doubts himself at times.
