2006/2007 Report - B4 Grade

After last years script involving us scraping into the semis and then having a heartbreaking loss to the premiers by less the 10 runs, I was surprised to see the team bumped up a grade when others had stayed put. However none of that really seemed to matter at the end of the season with the B4s claiming the minor premiership along with our 4th grand final to boot (High Four!). The team underwent some more reshaping with new recruits Steve (Papa) Sarlog, Troy (Rowdy) Higginbotham and Matt Smith all placing themselves in the highlights reel at various points of the season.

At the start of the year I couldn't have really pictured us being as competitive as we wanted to be in this grade, however these boys continue to prove me wrong. This season built a lot of character in some players who have always had the ability but not always been able to show it when it counts. I couldn't be prouder at how much these lads have grown in cricketing ability and also displayed themselves out on the cricket field. They are a great bunch to captain and good fellas to boot. A great season from every one of them…… Let's bring on number 5 next year.

Jason (Jas) Currey: Jas will probably sum up his year as a frustrating one. He hit over 200 runs for the year but couldn't crack the 50 mark. His work behind the stumps was again solid resulting in his 20 catches and he was always strong in seeing off the new ball with the bat. Look to see Jas with 50s to his name next season, they're coming mate.
Season Highlight: 44 v Norwest in the Grand Final, patient innings that took the pressure off all the batters who followed.

Steve (Papa) Sarlog: What a find this guy was, and the whole package to boot. 350+ runs and 20+ wickets are just things you can't buy. He also has the mature head on him that a captain loves. Goes about his cricket in a fair manner and his attitude rubs off on those around him. His bowling and batting saved and won us games at many times during the season. Top Bloke and Great Cricketer.
Season Highlight: 78 v Greystanes in round 4. Half the team was at a wedding and he came in at 3 with the score at 2/10. He stayed there until we were well into the 3 figures mark then came out and took 3/19 to win us the game.

Adam (Ads) Shearman: Ads got back into the runs this year after a leaner than he would have liked one last year. Ads scores runs quickly, with his preferred option being over the rope and not through it. He has the ability to turn a game around with powerful and demoralizing hitting. Rolled his arm over again on a few occasions and took his customary 2 wickets. Good to see the man back in the runs.
Season Highlight: 84 v AKA in round 13. Although Ads was one of 2 players to score tons this year, this innings was by far more spectacular. After being rolled for under 50 and then rolling AKA for 100 we needed quick runs. Ads took it upon himself to tear the opening bowling attack apart 8 6s and 5 4s in an innings that didn't last 10 overs. It was great to watch.

John (Billy) Jerome: Billy was back in the runs again this year and showed much more maturity in his batting this year. He's backing his ability to make the right shots and build the big innings. His fielding as always was top notch and was a deserved winner of the fielding award. Billy is developing into a great all round cricketer so watch this space as more good things are on the way for this young lad.
Season Highlight: 70 v Norwest in round 5. After turning up to cricket looking like he was on deaths door (from the previous nights festivities) he went on to smash our eventual grand final opponents to all ends of the park. This has prompted us to try and get Billy drunk every Friday.

Michael (Pockets) Homsy: Pockets is simply one of those crickets every team needs. When you need someone to stay with you to build a partnership, or make a breakthrough when you're getting smashed around the park, you call on this guy. Great all round cricketer who enjoys every aspect of the game.
Season Highlight: 5/49 v Greystanes in round 11. Came on when Greystanes were getting the better of us and made the breakthrough, then ripped through the tail. Great spell

Chris (Chippa) Hush: Chris is another one who will probably say he wasn't as happy with this season's performances, however in his defense he probably didn't have the opportunities he's had in previous years. Chris is a handy cricketer who has the ability to stick around and build an innings, something that is a little rare in our squad. Another one who'll be back in the runs next season.
Season Highlight: 1st ball in the Colts v Seniors game. With 8 of the team playing in the game there was always going to be some rivalry. Ads decided he'd opening the batting so the new cherry was thrown to chippa, who proceeded to send Ads on his way with the first ball of the day. We still haven't stopped hearing about it.

Mark (Griggsy) Griggs: The big man really stood up this year and showed the potential in his batting that's always been there. He didn't make as many runs as he has in previous years but he made them when the team really needed them, and without showing any fear for the opposition or the situation. Went through a weird period of getting a duck followed by a 50+ score. Good signs for this club stalwart as he continues to mould himself into a great cricketer.
Season Highlight: 75 v Merrylands in round 7. Playing the last team that had beaten us in a grand final Mark played an aggressive innings leaving our opponents wondering where all this skill was the last time we played.

Jono (The Excitement Machine) Bocking: Finally...Jono showed the rest of the club what the team has known for years, he's a great all rounder. Various times throughout the season JB won us games with his explosive batting. He then backed this up with his bowling and showing more control with the ball. Another player along with Ads who can completely change the course of a match in the blink on a eye. Great season JB
Season Highlight: 50no v Hills Barbars in round 2. Jono was reminding everyone that he had still not been dismissed yet after walking off with a 50 to his name. Hard hitting at its destructive best.

Troy (Rowdy) Higginbotham: Another newcomer to the team to make an immediate impact before the season had even started. This impact was with a red ball and chippas face during a Sunday training session and to this day I think the mark is still there. Rowdy brought something to the team we haven't had in a very long time, raw pace. He bowls very quickly and often has batsmen 2 and 3 times his age jumping to all areas of the pitch. Learned to control the ball more as the season went on and that resulted in more wickets. This man also has one of the best slow balls I have ever seen in cricket. Look for this mans name popping up in the A Grade results in years to come.
Season Highlight: 3/6 v Guildford Bowling in round 8. Last game before Christmas and he was unplayable bowling a great 8 over spell. His efforts in the Grad Final came a close second.

Sacha (Sash) Hilbrink: There's nothing I can really say about this player that everyone doesn't already know. Sacha is a great team player who has amazing control of a cricket ball along with fielding and battling skills to boot. Always in your ear with some reinforcement when the opposition appears to be getting the better of you, Sacha is worth his weight in gold and I can't imagine cricket without him.
Season Highlight: 5/36 v Merrylands in round 7. Gave Merrylands a master class in inswing bowling, it was a great 12 over spell.

Dave (Home wrecker) Massingham: Masso had limited time with the boys this year mainly due to him blowing his knee playing indoor soccer after round 5. His limited appearances were always solid and he was always around at the fundraisers for us to take his money (thanks Dave). Masso will be back next year bigger and better.
Season Highlight: Saturday night at "Howl at the Moon" on the end of season trip.. No comment.

Brad (Murph) Murphy: Murph was a late inclusion this season and filled in on many occasions when we were short. His batting matured a lot over the season and was the in form batsman going into the semis. Was left out of the grand final in probably the hardest decision I've had to make as a captain. If we can coax him back next season look for Murph to be piling on the runs.
Season Highlight: 63 v Greystanes in the semi. Was part of back to back 50s where brad led the way with a smart and aggressive innings.

Matt (Matty) Smith: Matt made an immediate impact scoring a ton in his first match for the team. His work meant he didn't play regularly but when he did he was scoring runs and taking wickets. Player with a lot of talent who gelled into the team nicely and was a good replacement opener for Masso after he picked up his injury.
Season Highlight: 100no v Guildford Bowling in round 1. Carried his bat to score a great ton in the 32 over smash-a-thon, picking it up with the final ball of the innings.

Pat (Paddy) Mamo: The cap started the season off well with the bat and pretty poor with the ball, which isn't great when you're a bowler. Form picked up with the ball and the business end of the season and he finished where he wanted to be. Didn't bat as much as he would have liked and wasn't batting with the aggression he has shown in previous years. Look for that to change next season.
Season Highlight: Caught and Bowled v Norwest in the Grand Final. I didn't know I could get down that fast; there is photographic proof for any doubters.

Special thanks must go to Grant Korney, Will Dokter, Joe Gurka, Pat (Fezza) McPhee and M. Marjoniemi for filling in at various times throughout the season. Special thanks also to all the lovely ladies up on the Gold Coast who put up with our shenanigans on the end of season tour. But the last thanks has to go to Leigh (Mama) Griggs for putting up with our crap week in week out, sticking up for us while we're out on the field and helping us decide if the dumbarse fines are warranted or not. Her assistance is immeasurable and we all thank her very much for it.
