President's Report - 2006/2007

Well, we are at the end of another busy season and it is an honour to be able to present the President's report to you again. Baulkham Hills is a great club and I am proud to represent it.

This season, the club fielded a total of 28 teams, two less than last year. This was made up of 11 senior and 17 junior teams, which maintained our position as one of the largest clubs in the PDCA. A total of 16 teams, over 60% of the teams who play finals, qualified for the finals, This was made up of 7 senior sides - B2, B4, B5, B6, B11, B12 & B14 and 9 junior sides - U16/1, U15/1, U14/1, U13/1, U13/2, U12/1, U12/2, U11/1 & U11/3. There were 4 minor premiers, B4 & B14 in seniors and U14/1 & U11/1 in the juniors. After the semis, we had 7 teams playing for premierships. Unfortunately, B6 & B11 in seniors and U12/2 & U11/3 in juniors finished as runners up. The U12/2 game was very close and the result could have been reversed. Congratulations go to our three premiership winning teams B4, U14/1 & U11/1. After two winless seasons in seniors, the B4's comprehensively won the title with an outright victory by an innings. The U14/1's retained the trophy won last year. The team included four players from last year's winning team and made it 5 successive titles for coach Nigel Bertus & manager Ian Chatman. The U11/1 victory was an absolute nail biter! We made 93 & then Norwest reached our total with 9 wickets down. We then proceeded to bowl 5 maiden overs in a row (very rare in U11), before getting a LBW. This made the game a tie & as we had finished minor premiers, we won the premiership. An amazing game & when the bowler who bowled the last over was asked why he didn't bowl a wide, he replied "I was too scared"!

We had a number of players represent Parramatta in the NSW Districts Cricket competition. The U14 Moore Shield won their third successive title. The team included five Baulkham Hills players and was coached & managed by Baulkham Hills members Nigel Bertus & Ian Chatman. In the open age Martin Shield, Sumit Kalia from our A Grade side was a standout performer with the bat & the team lost the final when he was overseas! Out of the eight Parramatta teams, Baulkham Hills had 3 coaches, 2 managers & 18 players. We also had seven players in the A.W.Green Shield competition - six in the Parramatta team and one in the Sydney University team.

The Have-A-Go program was again run this season. It was held at Charles McLaughlin Reserve on Friday night and 70 children, 5 to 8 year olds attended. This was an increase on last year's numbers. The coaching this year was carried out by a number of Baulko players - both senior and junior, as well as some parents and other helpers. Special mention must be made of Evan Platt from the U16/1, who was there every week. Thank you to Co-Ordinator Jeff Warland and all those who helped make the program a success - not only the coaches, but the other helpers as well.

The financial side of the club remains healthy. This can be attributed in the main to the fund raising activities of the club and the continued support of Bankstown District Sports Club. The social committee are to be congratulated on their efforts, with the Trivia Night once again a very successful and well supported event. The NSW cricket raffle was held again and was reasonably well supported and gave us around $2000 profit. The canteens were again a great source of income and we thank those who assisted in the running of them. Thanks to the social committee chairperson Karyn Springall and committee members Leigh Griggs, Steve Hobbs & Jeremy Billings. It would be remiss of me not to mention the many hours of work put in by Leigh Griggs, not only on the social committee, but more importantly in the running of the canteens. Leigh, we thank you for all the time and hard work you put in the carry out these duties.

This year the Colts v Seniors game was held at Charles McLaughlin and was played as a Twenty/20 match. The game was a thriller, with the Colts scoring 2 off the last ball & making the match a tie - 173 runs a piece!

On the subject of playing facilities, this season has seen an improvement in the standard of the parks. The prolonged drought and the damage caused by the winter sports have made the task of Council quite difficult. However the grass cover was improved significantly during the season. But, and it must be said once again, the length of the grass on the grounds is not acceptable for the playing of cricket. It makes the scoring of runs hard, unless you want to go "over the top". The standard of the turf pitch at Charles McLaughlin continues to improve and a vote of thanks goes to groundsman Paul Harris and his team. With a view to improvement of facilities, we held a meeting with council in March. We are hopeful of some improvements and upgrades and are looking into the construction of an additional set of nets to relieve the logjam during training times

The annual challenge matches against Bankstown Sports Club were held at Bankstown on a wet Sunday in February. This year we won the U11 game, but the seniors was won by Bankstown. In December, we again played a match against the NSW vision impaired team at Ted Horwood Reserve.

The service awards continue on and this year we presented Ron Moye with a 30 year award. Well done Ron.

After many years, the use of the storage facilities provided by Arthur Scarf came to an end when he retired. We now have moved our storage to Charles McLaughlin Reserve. The facility has been fitted out with storage shelves, thanks to the hard work of Chris Springall & Rick Thomas. While on the subject of equipment, I must thank Terry Webb for his efforts as our equipment officer again this year.

The Management committee saw a few changes this year, with Sally Rich & Graham Howard joining the committee after the AGM. However, Graham moved to Armidale at Christmas time and was replaced by Ram Raja. Thanks to all these people. However, the role of Secretary remained unfilled during the season. Although it was tough at times, we got by and this was in no small way due to the work put in by Rick Thomas, who added some of the secretarial duties to his already busy schedule as the Results Steward, Owzatt Editor and Webmaster. If you have not looked at the website, I suggest you should go to www.baulkocricket.com.au and spend some time looking around. To all the committee, I personally thank you for the time you have put in during the season. I know it is time consuming and that your families suffer. Your efforts are much appreciated. For the continued successful running of a club as large as Baulkham Hills, we must have a full compliment of committee members and I ask you to consider taking on a role on the committee.

PDCA is looking at changing the management structure and as a club we support this and believe it will be good for the Association.

I would like to thank all the senior captains, vice captains and mangers, the junior coaches and managers and all those who helped make the running of the Club much easier. I would like to thank Baulkham Hills Sports Club and the manager Mr. John Baresic, for their continued support, both financially and with the provision of their facilities during the season. The building program at the Sports Club is underway, with Bankstown Sports Club providing over $8 million for these extensions. We look forward to the completion of Stage 1 works, then hopefully Stage 2, leading to a bigger and better Baulkham Hills Sports Club.

Congratulations to all the trophy winners and our premiership winning teams.

Peter McLoughlin
President
