2004/2005 Report - Under 15/1

This season was one of change for the 15/1's. With the loss of five personnel from the previous year we welcomed Kartik, Neeraj, Pramod and Blake to the team giving us a bare minimum of eleven players. We also said farewell to Jeff Warland who stood down as coach due to work commitments. After a great win against Kings Langley in round one, individual commitments meant we often ended up playing short in a number of rounds, which greatly affected our performance. To the boys credit they never gave up and showed great determination and fighting spirit to come back from the brink on many occasions. Once the reality of our situation was accepted the team really turned things around towards the seasons end to record a couple of great victories. This culminated in our best performance beating Cabravale Diggers in the final round. The highlight for me personally was the ability of the boys to bond through adversity, enjoy their cricket and have fun.

The Team

Ryan Buckland: performances were down from previous seasons however always gave 100% in the field taking a couple of great catches. Could always be relied on to provide words of inspiration. Champion of "Backyard Cricket". Hated wearing shoes at training.

Pramod Chandra: Started the season in fine form with the bat top scoring with a quick fire 56 in a one dayer against Cabravale which almost won us the game. Batting improved with experience on turf. Only given limited bowling opportunities with a best of 2/7 against Kings Langley.

James Frank: struggled with the bat for the majority of the season but persevered and found runs in the last three matches including a magnificent 54noagainst Wenty Waratahs. Worked hard on his keeping but kept his bowling prowess under wraps until the last game taking 3/6 and almost a hat trick.

Kevin Hesse: after a fantastic 47 in the first match Kevin's bat deserted him until the second last game. Could always be relied upon to take a wicket virtually every time he bowled, saving his best till last taking 2/16. Safe slips fieldsman and deserved winner of the fielding award.

Blake Jones: Joined us from baseball for his first year of cricket and a definite improver as the season progressed. Bowling was a highlight especially a fantastic spell against Wenty Legues destroying the heart of their batting taking 3/13. Always safe in the field taking some great catches. Team fashion guru.

Tanveer Joshan: Relished the responsibility of opening the bating and bowling. Played some great innings especially 62no against Greystanes when it looked as if we were headed for an outright defeat. His 56no in the last match was also a stand out. Bowled with good pace and accuracy claiming 14 wickets to take out the bowling award.

Neeraj Joshi: Top scored with a fine 56 against Seven Hills and chipped in with runs on a couple of occasions. First year on turf and hopefully learned from the experience. Only given limited bowling opportunity but picked up an unbelievable 2/0 against Wenty Leagues.

Tim Littlejohns: Always a good team player willing to move up or down the batting order. Struggled with the bat at times but made up with aggressive running between the wickets. Bowled well before Christmas claiming 3/21 against Cabravale, then unfortunately suffered as back injury.

Luke Palmer: Started the season with his best ever figures of 5/27 against Kings Langley, which gave him a great confidence boost. Continued to pick up wickets when given the opportunity and took 2/11 in the last match. Worked hard on his batting and contributed to some useful partnerships in the lower order.

Matt Scholz: Given the extra responsibility of leading the team this season, Matt performed well with both bat and ball. Could usually be relied upon to get a start and form a partnership when needed. Picked up some vital wickets with accurate bowling. Quiet, unassuming and never one to seek attention.

Kartik Yardau: Always gave 100% during a match or at training. Missed the first couple of games whilst in India, but once he got a few overs under his belt his bowling really improved. Picked up a best of 3/2 against Kings Langley. Limited opportunities batting down the order but chipped in with some valuable runs.

Many thanks to everyone who assisted throughout the season, especially to Robin for keeping the scorebook so neat and tidy. Doug for umpiring when available and Karyn for expanding my waistline by stocking the canteen with fingerbuns. Special thanks to Bob Dokter for covering McLaughlin every Friday night and to Tom Warland who filled in for us on short notice.

Thanks to Rick for ringing to check our results every time I forgot to submit them.

Last but not least I would like to thank the boys who helped me learn throughout the season. At times it was frustrating but training was always enjoyable and I look forward to seeing everyone return for our final year of juniors.
