2004/2005 Report - Under 16/2

Once again a season comes to the end and I think what this team could have done. If success is measured by the amount of fun a team has, then this was probably one of the competitions highest achievers. While it was disappointing to only win a few games, there were 5 other games where we scored more runs than our opposition off the bat and only lost because we conceded a ridiculously high number of sundries.

This was also a difficult season for the players with a squad of 13 and two players being promoted each week to the division 1 side to help make up the numbers. This proved very disruptive to not only our team but also the division 1 side. After Christmas this problem was alleviated when Lokesh and Lakshey volunteered to stay up in then 16/1's for the rest of the season. Thank you to both boys, as I am sure it helped both teams.

Once again special thanks to Terry Webb who coached this team for the 6th year.

Without his assistance it would have been near impossible for us to keep this team on the paddock every week. I would also like to thank Sharon Whittaker for generously supplying morning coffee and cakes/biscuits/cookies, which definitely make the job of scoring a lot easier. Thanks also to Chris Meakins and Phil Whittaker for helping with scoring and Craig Jones and Greg Gibb for umpiring when terry had other commitments with the women's team. I am also sure that the players enjoyed having a band of supporters cheering them along (in amongst lots of groans) each week.

I have enjoyed the 6 years I have been managing the team and I should apologise to any parents for my organisational lapses, but generally we always managed to get to the right game at the right ground on the right day. It has been fun watching the players grow up and develop many good friendships that through cricket will be long lasting.

The Team

Tim Carter: "Captain Courageous" Stepped up to the role of captaincy this year and no doubt like anyone who has captained a team fond it a lot harder than he expected. Tim's batting was not as consistent as last year and with the ball took 12 wickets for the season with his unique bowling style. Tim always went flat out at every thing he did.

Michael Carter: Michael was developing into a good opening batsman and was able to hold an end up for long periods of time. Michael took some classic catches this season and he bowled only a few overs and did not get to show what a damaging bowler he could be.

Chris Gibb: Chris continued to improve as the season progressed and now that his feet are moving more runs should come. He only had limited chances with the ball, but took the wicket of a century maker from Seven Hills.

Ravi Jayanetti: Ravi missed a lot of the season with a bad back. When he was on he was one of the quickest bowlers in the competition. With the bat he always looked good but kept getting the good ball or the great catch. Ravi always looked to be enjoying his cricket.

Bryce Jones: Bryce had his best season with the bat scoring 123 runs to be third in the aggregate. He played many good innings and has developed the habit of scoring 22 runs every 2nd innings. Bryce featured in a 40 run partnership with Kate against Pendle Hill for the 7th wicket that guided the team to a good win. The big score will certainly come. With the ball he bowled many good spells, but suffered from dropped catches. Bryce is always reliable in the field.

Reece Jones: Reece started the season slowly with both bat and ball, but following Christmas he showed what he could do. Reece scored an excellent 78 versus Kings Langley on a very slow ground that was almost certainly worth a century on any other ground we played at this season. With the ball, he was our leading wicket taker and by far the most accurate bowler in the team.

Lokesh Kumar: Following an excellent season last year, Lokesh had no luck with the bat. As an opening batsman you cannot help getting a good ball early. Lokesh continued to develop well with his leggies.

Lakshey Kumar: Lakshey improved with the bat this year being not out 4 out of eight innings. This was the result on an improved defence. Lakshey continued to bowl quickly but had no luck narrowly missing the stumps on many occasions.

Keith Meakins: As the teams wicketkeeper he was given a good workout behind the stumps. With the bat, Keith had a disappointing season except for one good innings of 43. Keith starred with the ball taking 5/26 including a hat trick in amongst a score of 310 by Wenty Waratahs

Brent Miller: Brent is another cricketer who threw himself into the game with everything he had. He played several very quick cameos and would have finished the year with a strike rate of about 200. As a bowler, Brent was very fast and this caused plenty of problems for the batsman and our fieldsman behind the stumps.

Simon Ruxton: Simon had an unlucky season with the bat, but still played some good innings, with the ball he kept improving and finished second in the bowling averages with 16 wickets and he was unlucky not to get a 5 for in the last match.

David Smith: David had an unbelievable season with the bat to take the trophy by a considerable amount. He is one of the cleanest hitters in the competition. David bowled some great spells and was outstanding in the field. David is another cricketer full of enthusiasm and enjoys every moment of the game.

Kate Whittaker: Kate had a fantastic year with the bat and featured in 2 century partnerships. Kate scored 119 runs for the year and probably batted for longer than anyone else in the team. An excellent defence has led to this improvement and moving up to number 3 in the batting order. In the field Kate is very fast and chases everything down No matter how fast the ball is coming Kate always manages to get part of her body behind the ball and stop it. Kate only had limited opportunities at the bowling crease.
