Chasing what must have been a record 4th consecutive Grand Final win, season 04 - 05 will probably be remember by most of the team as the on that got away. Although we took the minor premiership we fell 30 odd runs short in a final where we all knew that 100 runs on the board was easily defendable. As it turned out that would have got us home. However even though this year it was not to be, that doesn't take the shinning off another great season from the team of Baulko stayers. This team has shown what staying together and playing with guys you know and trust can do for cricket and also for the club. For yet another year we had a player score 500+ runs in a season, another take 50+ wickets, 2 players in the top 5 crickets of the year for the club and we placed highest of all senior teams in the team of the year running (Damn Juniors). And as always 4 or 5 players rather than 1 or 2 were fighting for the batting and bowling awards. When you add to that the fact that we have 4 or 5 players in the team who've cleared 10 years of service (2 of them aren't 20 yet) well, enough said. I cannot emphasise how much this team enjoys playing cricket with each other week in, week out and although it may not have got us all the way this year, its certainly reflected in our overall results. We'll be back next year to give it another crack. Jason Currey (vice captain) - Jas probably had his best year of cricket since ive played with him. Although he may tell you he wasn't as consistent as last year, he pulled out some big scores when we needed them including a great unbeaten knock in the semi final to get us home. His glove work behind the stumps was also a vast improvement on last year, managing to take some seemingly untakeable catches. A great player to have in your corner, the kind of opener every team wishes they had. Simon Joyce - Had another great year with the bat, piling on runs throughout the year. Hit 3 great tons this year, bringing up at least 2 of them with 6s. Was probably under bowled a little this year but still managed to pick up wickets as soon as he was introduced. His fielding continued to shine in the true Joyce way and this in turn seemed to rub off on other members of the team. Simo has developed himself into an on field leader and makes a captains job so much easier, another great season. (Simo also discovered Alcohol this year at the ripe old age of 21........ The team continues to rejoice, no punn intended) Andrew Joyce - Junior shone this year having his best year of cricket yet. Continually lethal week after week with the ball, this year he backed it up with the bat. He was unlucky to fall 4 runs short of a ton towards the end of a season with an electrical/hail storm stopping play. Junior has turned himself into a true all-rounder. Great season. Dave Massingham - Masso continued as he does year in year out to come along and play his cricket with 100% commitment. Was shifted around a bit this year but spent most of his time seeing off the new ball with Jas. This man is lightening between the wickets and when he does get the pull shot out, he can use it to great effect. Another great team player that you couldn't dream of not having in your team. Adam Shearman - Ads is another player who's experience is immeasurable, especially in the field. He's that player you have at Mid on (or mid off) that's continually in your ear, always dishing out positives when your heading downhill. His never give up attitude and over the top celebrations helped us win a few games this year we might not have deserved to win. He probably wont be as happy with his batting this year as there wasn't a repeat of last years 20 sixes, but when a batsman like Ads can come in anywhere from 4 to 7 and hit up a 50 in no time, well he can just completely alter a match. Look to see more runs from Ads next season with the big hitting on its way back. Mark Griggs - Griggsy had the unluckiest year of any cricketer ive ever known. After starting the season with a broken collarbone, he spent the first few rounds watching from the sideline. Then after a brief return he re-injured the same shoulder-mucking round with of all people Homesy. When he did get back to back games he showed he hasn't lost any skills in the field (his runout in the semi probably won us the game) and continued to display that aggressive Griggsy style of batting we've come to expect. With consistent game time this guy will be back around the top of the batting stats next season, he more than has the potential. Chris Hush - Hushy had an up and down season this year. His batting was well up on last year, he scored more runs in the first game this season than he did in all of last year's regular season. However where his batting increased his fielding he may want to forget. However while he dropped a good 9 or 10 throughout the season he took probably one of the best ones in the final, which came along with a facial injury, attached. However unlucky he was on the field his batting continued to impress and if he takes that confidence into next season, expect to see him as a regular in the match reports. Jono Bocking - I don't know what more there is I can really say about JB. Having played 6 or 7 season with him he still continues to pull off the untakable catches. His fielding is uncanny at the best of times. When given the chance with the bat he took the opposition attack to town with some big, quick hitting. His bowling along with his batting was up on last year. In any other team this guy would probably bat 5 and bowl first change. Another top all rounder. Dave Smith - Smitty was one of 2 new players brought into the team this year through our recruiter Jono. Tall lefty with a big hit and some demon pace with the ball. Had a great first season in a team that probably hard to just walk into. Bowled with raw pace in had some of the better batsmen in our comp on the back foot. His fielding was top class and his batting continued to improve as the season progressed. Another player your likely to see as a regular on the weekly reports next season, but a great first season for Baulko. Paul Paciulla - Pauly started the season off badly, missing the first game or 2 without telling anyone. However when he did start turning up we were able to see what he could offer. Pauly can field anywhere and take catches that he shouldn't be getting within 5 metres of. Started wearing running spikes in the outfield after complaining about the lack of traction at the home of cricket. Batted with a matchstick and although not too many runs were score, most of the ones that were score were from batteries. Great first season from another newie. Sacha Hilbrink - There isn't really anything you can write about Sach that most of the club patrons don't already know. This man puts his heart into the team and club every game and without fail, he delivers. An injury early in the season probably stopped Sach from picking up a few more wickets. However this guy has so much influence on the team and has such an attitude towards everything that you can't imagine playing cricket without him. Sach will spring back next year with a flood of wickets and a few more runs, an in-swinging genius. Matt Joyce - Baby filled in a few games for us this season and continued to display no fear of moving from juniors into the afternoon game. Bowled a great 6 over spell of 0/11 in a game where other bowlers were being hit round the park. He's a big hitting cricket and the only one of the Joyce's that seems to show any emotion when he's playing his cricket. Good young cricket to call on when needed and with his junior cricket now finished, look for a fair few teams to be queuing up to sign this boy onto their squad. Pat Mamo (Captain) - The cap had a bit of an up and down season. His bowling was well up on last year and he enjoyed taking the cherry whenever he could. However his batting was a bit lacklustre and he probably threw his wicket away on a few occasions when a steady knock was there for the taking. Still quiet happy with his season and keen to pile on a few more runs next year. Special thanks must also go to J.Chapman, Bargy, Micky D, Homsey, John Jerome, D.Nethery and Ian Renton for filling in throughout the season. Also to Mama Griggs for again scoring all the runs this year and Grandma & Grandpa Joyce for turning up to a host of games both home and away this season to lend their support, much appreciated by the whole team.
