It almost feels like deja vu writing this captains report, for unfortunately we were just nipped in the bud again when it came to winning a premiership. Last year saw this mighty team make it to a final for the first time in its long history, slipping into the semi on an aggregate of .002 higher that of 5th. This year we entered the semi with a little more breathing room coming in clear 2nd; in both semi-finals we have played teams that have defeated us in both rounds of the season and won. Unfortunately in both finals we have lost by less that 20 runs. This year saw the return of a much refreshed and thinner Cameron Booth after his gallivanting around Europe last year (why during cricket season is anybody's guess). From the word go Cameron was on the boil and slipped back into the team as the handy left arm bowler complimenting the exciting Roger Deane and the slowing Dean Stapleton in the opening slots. This competition for the opening bowlers brought out their best with the stats showing us to be the hardest team in the comp. To score against with a solid second row of bowlers to follow up if needed, with the likes of Darren Tipton, Brett McLaren, Brett Stapleton (over bowled) and Brian King amongst others. We also saw the introduction of two new players whilst some of the fold had a year off for different reasons (none of them worth printing). The first character was Mick Smith, Mick's batting style was clearly invoked by the great Adam Gilchrist with his eyes lighting up at every ball, unfortunately Mick was not blessed with the same cricketing talent as Adam. Mick had two saving graces however, the first is Mick's quite a competent fielder and got better with the season, the second is Mick's partial to the odd ale or two after the game and was able to slot into the team nicely. I look forward to Mick's company next year. The second character was a Brett McLaren, when Brett came to the team there was promises of a competent batsman (more that Brett Stapleton would have been nice) and in the first two games of the season that promise looked to have been delivered, all to soon though we were to discover it was an illusion and whilst Brett was unlucky with the bat we were to discover he is extremely handy with the ball, taking a hat-trick in round 4 (great another bowler). Brett also has a tendency to enjoy the club after a game and as with Mick we knew he would fit into the team well (can't bat, loves a beer). Again I have enjoyed my time at the helm and would take this opportunity to say thank you to all the team for a great year and plenty of laughs, in particular my vice-captain Brett Stapleton and the team's manager Jeremy Billings. As a team we have continued to mature as cricketers (it's what sort of cricketers that we are maturing into that has some concerned), and whilst our reflexes are not what they were a decade ago the mind is still willing and the passion still burns, where that will get us next year is anybody's guess but one thing for certain is we will be back.
All the best lads
