President's Report - 2004/2005

It is a great honour to be able to present my first report as President of Baulkham Hills Cricket Club. I hope that I can continue the fine work done by previous presidents. My predecessor Neil Boyle must be congratulated on the fine job he did during his term as President. Together with the committee, I look forward to the challenge of keeping Baulkham Hills among the top Clubs in the Parramatta District Cricket Association.

This year our Club fielded a total of 29 teams, one less than last year. This comprised 13 senior and 16 junior teams, maintaining our position as one of the largest clubs in the district. A total of 16 teams qualified for the semi finals, made up of 10 senior sides - A Grade, B2, B4, B5, B6, B7, B8, B11, B12 and B14, together with 6 junior sides - U14/1,U13/1,U13/2, U12/1, U11/1 & U11/2. There were 3 minor premiers, B4 and B5 in seniors and the U13/1 in juniors, who remained unbeaten for the third successive season. After the semis, we had 7 teams playing for the premiership. Unfortunately 6 of these - B5, B7, B11, U14/1, U12/1 & U11/1 finished as runners-up, after putting up a great fight. Three of these teams - B7, U14/1 and U12/1 came within 10 runs or so of victory. With a little more luck they could have come out on top. Congratulations go to the U13/1 team, who once again showed their class with a wonderful victory. It must be said that the team had a major scare in the semi, when a batting collapse saw them struggle past the victory target with only a single wicket in hand. There were some very nervous parents, not to mention the coach and manager. While this result was well short of last year's tally of 6 premierships, the large number of teams who made it to the finals showed that Baulkham Hills were very competitive in many grades. Hopefully this is a good omen for the coming years. Before finishing on this season's results, it would be remiss of me not to mention our A Grade team. Although at first, reluctant to play in the top grade, the team showed great spirit and skill to make the semis. Well done to the team management and the players, especially those who filled in during the season.

Our Club was again well represented in the representative teams. We had a total of 14 players in the junior teams, as well as 4 players in senior teams. It is pleasing to be able to report that both the U19 Durham Shield and U12 Cawsey Shield were victorious in the finals of the Inter District Competition. Baulkham Hills was well represented in both teams, with three players and the coach in the U19 team and four players, the coach and the manager in the U12 team. The U13 team was runner-up, with another two players in this team.

The Have-A-Go program was again run this season. It was held at Charles McLaughlin Reserve on Friday night and around 50 5 to 8 year olds attended. It was well supported and this year a feature of the program was the use of three of our junior players, who hold Level 1 accreditation, as coaches. The youngsters also played at Telstra Stadium during a Woman's National League match and at the SCG during a domestic one dayer, which featured most of the NSW test players. Thank you to all those who helped make the program a success - not only the coaches, but the other helpers as well. It was pleasing that Shawn Bradstreet was able to attend the final night and present the awards.

The financial side of the club continues to be healthy. This can be attributed in the main to the fund raising activities of the club. The social committee are to be congratulated on their efforts, with the Trivia Night once again a great night and well supported. Both canteens did extraordinarily well this season, so a vote of thanks goes to those who worked so hard to run these. On a disappointing note, both the Melbourne Cup trifecta and the Saturday night meat raffles were nowhere nearly as well supported as in previous years. It is an area that needs to be looked by the committee.

The playing facilities are very important and the committee were recognisant of this. The new synthetic pitch was installed in the lower area at Charles McLaughlin and it was used by two of our U10 teams. The standard of the turf wicket at Charles McLaughlin showed a marked improvement after Council purchased a new, larger roller. Council are to be congratulated on this. With the prolonged drought, the quality of the playing surfaces has shown a marked deterioration and we can only hope that some moderate rainfalls help to revitalise the grounds. The new oval at Masonic School should be ready for the new cricket season and we will be applying for the lease of the ground.

The annual challenge matches against Bankstown Sports Club were held at Bankstown this year. While the weather was again hot in the extreme, it is pleasing to be able to report that we were victorious in both the senior & U11 matches. We thank Bankstown Sports for their hospitality and look forward to the return matches at our grounds next season. In January, a match was held against a visually impaired team at Ted Horwood Reserve. This proved to be as most interesting game and it is planned to play a game against the NSW side later this year, as a warm up for their participation in the National Championships.

This season has seen the introduction of the service awards, as recognition of those players and officials who have been a part of this Club for many years. Of special importance this year, is the induction of two new life members. Both Neil Boyle and George Wasyluk have given many, many years service to this Club and we are indebted to them for their efforts. Well done Neil and George

The Management committee will also need some new blood this year, with both George Wasyluk, our Junior Secretary and Malcolm Currey, our long term Treasurer stepping down. Thank you both for a job well done.

I would like to thanks all the senior captains, vice captains and mangers, the junior coaches and managers and all those who helped make the running of the Club much easier. I would like to thank Baulkham Hills Sports Club for their continued support, both financially and with the provision of their facilities during the season. A pleasing note this year was seeing some of our younger senior players prepared to coach our junior sides. It is to be hoped that others take up this challenge in the coming years.

In closing, I would like to thank the Management Committee for their hard work in running the Club this year.

Congratulations to all the trophy winners and our premiership winning team.

Peter McLoughlin
President
