Well what a great year we had again this year. It was our third year together and after getting a taste of the semi-final action last year we took a further two steps and won the title. This was a fantastic effort considering that two years ago we missed out on the semi-finals by just one point and last made it to our first semi-final, this was quite an achievement. The team started off the year in good form with the bat and ball but were starved of some practice after a long Christmas lay off. In the second half of the season our top order batsmen struggled a little, but the sign of a really good team is when the other team members put up their hands and dig in and that is what they did. The one thing that continued to improve, much to our opponents' displeasure, was our bowling and attitude in the field. This is really what won us the grand final as our opposition could not put continual pressure on us like we did. Another sign of a good team is when they learn to do things for themselves. This year the team picked who they wanted as captains for the final series, being Robert and Kieran and it worked superbly. What was most pleasing is that this is what we have been practicing to do for the last two seasons and it paid dividends. Guys, here is an extract from last year's Annual Report which proved to be on the mark; "Well done team, you deserved your place as semi-finalists and next year you are capable of going all the way." This team has a very special fan club that would often embarrass our opponents. They are all the parents, grandparents and extended families that would turn up every Saturday and actually enjoy watching their kids play and enjoy the company of the other parents. You guys made the semi-final and grand final feel like a real family day out! I know the kids really appreciate your support and I am sure that they made you proud with their efforts on the field. Of course a big thanks to Chris Luther who has managed the team superbly for the last 3 years, both on an off the field. Thanks mate for your efforts as always. A special thanks goes again to Margaret Daines and Joe Vassallo who helped out with the scoring all year (with very little need for an eraser according to the condition of the scorebook!!). Also thanks to Peter Brown who took on a couple of training sessions at short notice during the year as the coach would find himself struggling to get of dam work commitments! Now let's have a look at this champion team a bit closer. Matthew Vassallo - Matt has continued to improve again this year, particularly his bowling which is really starting to bother the opposition. I can see Matt being a real star of the team next year if he keeps up the practice that he put in this year. His batting continues to improve with a personal best achieved against Norwest in our semi-final. His best fielding position was either mid-on or mid-off. Matt too took a great catch in our grand final match which helped us win the premiership. A great team member. Nelson Brown - Now just when you thought this young man could not improve his talk on the field any further, somehow Nelson found a way again this year! Nels really knows how to talk it up, which proved to be one of the key ingredients as to why the team achieved so much this year. His one handed catch against Norwest will go down as one of the best catches that I have seen from a junior cricket player. Nelson continues to improve with the bat and will be ready to score a lot of runs next year as he has had a fair amount of time at the crease this season. Just a little bit more patience and Nels will have it mastered. Paul Costi - Paul came back to the team this year after having a year off and fitted in just perfectly. Paul took some great catches in the gully position this year. Now with the bat this young man loves to hit out at the ball irrespective of whether it is the first ball he faces or whether it is right on the stumps, Paulie will hit out! One of the most memorable moments was against Wenty Waratah with the team chasing a small total Paul was sent into bat with Luke. Paul simply hit out at every ball and it wouldn't have mattered if Wenty had a 100 people in the field, Paul's still would have found the space. But he did the job and won the game for the team. Once Paul found the right length with his spinners, he would often claim wickets. We had to bring Paul on in the grand final to see if he could get his hat trick from the previous game! Mason Hemmings - Mace has been an integral part of this team for quite a few years now and is one of the players that our team looks to if in trouble. This young man has an incredible amount of talent both with the bat and ball. For some strange reason the ball didn't come Mace's way that much this year, probably because it would have been caught every time. Mace contributed with a great knock of 21 with the bat against Norwest when we were in trouble. His bowling was still outstanding, particularly when he came off a longer run up. His support of the team was outstanding when he played injured during our grand final. Your bike will be chained up next year before the semi-finals!! Daniel Gibb - Daniel too continued to improve this year and is an integral part of this great team. The respect that the team has for Daniel is simply amazing! Every ball that Dan picked up and every run he stopped was supported with a huge amount appreciation from his team mates. A great moment this year for Dan was against Wenty Waratah when he was thrown the ball and took a double wicket maiden in his first over! A great team member who will only continue to get better each year. Adam Luther - Yet another great year this young man has had, both with the bat and ball. Adam continues to improve every season and has now established himself as a first class opener in the team. His season with the bat has earned him the batting award for the second season in a row with 298 runs at an average of 29.80. With a couple of half centuries and a top score of 80 not out it is no wonder that Adam continues to head up the team. With the ball Ad was equally lethal with his in-swingers often rattling the stumps of his opponents. His courage is also a credit to him, particularly the way he came back out against Seven Hills after being hit where it really, really hurts! Kieran Houlahan - This guy stepped up another level again this year, particularly with his bowling and general leadership of the team. With his run up finally sorted his pace was incredibly fast, taking the most wickets of the season with 28 with an average of just 6.50. His batting was again quite solid when the team was in trouble, scoring a couple of half centuries and a top score of 73 not out, with a total of 266 runs and an average of 29.56. This young man is an example of what can be achieved through sheer determination and attitude. One memory for the year was his superb catch to remove Kellyville's strike batsman in the grand final. That broke their backs and set us on the road to victory. Luke Woodman - Now this young man came to the team this year for his first season of cricket. Having coached Luke (or Lukie as known to his team mates) in soccer last year, we knew that he wouldn't compete with Nels on the talking stakes but we had no idea the level of contribution that he would bring to the team. Luke in his first season of cricket has taken out the bowling award ahead of our strike bowlers with 23 wickets at an average of just 5.39. It was his bowling that really set up our semi-final and grand final wins. Luke produced two incredible spells of bowling in those matches being on a hat trick on both occasions. Simply outstanding!! Even with the bat Luke top scored with 43 against Kellyville. The way the team cheered him off the field in our semi-final match against Norwest was something special. Cameron Daines - Cameron took on the role of wicket keeper for the season and did a fantastic job. The thing that Cam loved to do was to stump the batsman and after a thousand attempts during the year he did claim his share of victims. Cam too would often compete with Nelson to see who could annoy the opposition's batsmen with good hearted banter! Cameron proved on a number of occasions that once he got his eye in with the bat then he would cause havoc. His 72 against Wenty Waratah was a highlight of the year and also his quick fire 22 against Kellyville in the grand final that helped set up victory. Cam put on 200 runs at an average of 22.22. Robert Slater - Rob certainly stepped up a level with his batting and bowling this year. Rob's 57 against Norwest in a record 127 run partnership was outstanding, but I think it was his leadership with the bat in the grand final against Kellyville that was the highlight with 23 unbeaten runs. Overall Rob amassed 146 runs at an average of 24.33. Rob would often open the batting with Adam and get the team off to some solid starts. His bowling also improved to become a real good first change bowler. His change of pace after our quicks would often deceive the opposition. Great young leader. Chiranjeev Narula - Chiran is one of the team's favourite players mainly because he continues to give a 110% effort. Chiran is a pleasure to coach and it is great to see him get the rewards for his efforts during the year. His catching is first class even though they leave his hands ringing a little! Often Chiran didn't need to bat when the team was going well and that suited him just fine, but when it was required he gave it everything he had. A great team member and incredibly well respected by his team mates. Keep up the good work mate. Tiarne Kleyn - Tiarne in just her second year with the team proved to be quite a leader, not by what she would say but by what she did. This young girl would have to be the most naturally talented female cricketer that I have seen. Her catching is second to none, her batting improving out of sight and her bowling action simply textbook like. She took some great catches again this year in the square leg area. Tiarne's batting really came to the fore particularly in the second half of the season with a top score of 21 against Norwest. Next year will be Tiarne's year as she gets used to more time at the crease and more time with the ball. Christian Millgate - It was Christian's first year with the team and proved to make a solid contribution particularly in the field taking some great catches in the slip and gully area. Once he found his line and length with the ball wickets never seemed to be far away. Christian was another good talker on the field which made it difficult for the opposition. He did however prove to be a little nervous with the bat and would often get out playing a big shot at the wrong ball. With a bit of patience and confidence Christian is capable of piling on quite a few runs.
