This was a great season with the boys getting through the preliminary rounds undefeated and deservedly winning the minor premiership. We acquired some new blood in the team this season which strengthened our side's all round ability. Jacob Astill was a great acquisition from Seven Hills as was Chris Slaviero from Wenty Leagues. Alan Sala was promoted from the second division and gave us a very handy left arm bowling option through the year. All newcomers fitted into the team extremely well and one of the main attributes of the team was its spirit and harmony. Led very ably by Luke McNaught and Tom Gurka, opportunities were granted to all boys in different games to bat up the order and bowl with the new ball. Responsibilties were rotated around so that all players got a fair go. Such was the depth of strength in the team that our success was not compromised by this approach. As a result, success was not dominated by a single player and runs and wickets were shared by all. Semi-Final: Our semi-final reflected our earlier season success with an easy win over Pendle Hill Colts. A solid 139 on a two-paced Charles McLaughlin wicket was too much for them as they struggled to be all out for 61. Hari Raja proved to be lethal (as he had all year) taking 4/15 off 9 overs. Final: Unfortunately, the final ended up being our first and only loss of the year. Kings Langley played a solid match and we didn't play up to our usual standard. Chasing 177, we were looking good at 1/61 but then proceeded to lose our last 9 wickets for only 37 runs. Thus, the premiership we so looked forward to was denied and left to be fought for next year. We would like to congratulate the boys on their exemplary behaviour on and off the field all season. They played the game in good spirit, supported each other at all times and demonstrated a mature approach to the way they played. Thanks to Jill Mihalyka and Brad Astill for their assistance in scoring (so neatly) and to Tim Platt and Brett Wood for their assistance in umpiring. Appreciation to the mothers of the boys who assisted with canteen duty during home games especially Priscilla Gunton and Rhonda Sala. Finally - a huge thanks to Brett McNaught for coaching the side. His faith and belief in the boys' ability to do the job never faded and he was always a source of encouragement and motivation for them. Luke McNaught (captain): Did a great job as captain of the team. Demonstrated good vision and trusted his judgement with confidence. Had a great year with the ball, usually opening the bowling and taking 18 wickets at 7.72. A high percentage of his wickets were bowled indicating his great line and length. Represented Parramatta in the Weblin Shield Tom Gurka: Terrific all-round cricketer considered by the coach to be the best in the district. Great year with the bat scoring 357 at average of 40. Also took valuable wickets and some great catches in the field. As vice-captain he provided great support to Luke in leading the team. Captained Parramatta Weblin Shield, represented Parramatta in Green Shield and invited to U16 NSW Emerging Blues trials. Jacob Astill: New recruit to the team and fitted well into the side. A player with great all round ability and solid performances through the year. Consistently took wickets with the new ball and a very useful run getter, being able to bat anywhere in the order. Represented Parramatta in the Weblin Shield. Evan Platt: Probably had his best year in cricket to date. A very good, consistent all rounder who works really hard on his game and sets himself high standards. Has a nack of taking a bag of wickets when needed through great line and swing bowling. Took 17 wickets at 9.65. Dogged middle order batsman who played some very useful innings. Hari Raja: Great leg spin bowler who deservedly took a mountain of wickets. All teams struggled to play his well-flighted leg breaks. Took 33 wickets at 7.18. A solid middle to lower order batsman who can hold up an end when needed. Represented Parramatta in the Weblin Shield and ended up leading wicket taker. Invited to U16 NSW Emerging Blues trials. Owen Butler: Another very useful and talented all-rounder who contributed significantly to the team's success. On his day is probably the fastest bowler in the team and he put in some lethal bowling spells which tore the opposition apart. Top order bat who made some useful scores. Rocket arm in the field. Alex Mihalyka: Hard hitting middle order batsman who top scored in the semi-final and ensured a good team total. Excellent change bowler who has a great ability to break a partnership just when needed. Safe hands in the field and took some freak catches. Represented Parramatta in the Weblin Shield. Alan Sala: New recruit to the top side from second division. Melded into the side very well and proved to be a very handy left arm swing bowler. Has great potential to develop into a top line bowler. Entertaining and valuable hard hitting lower order batsman who played some important innings late in the season. Luke Dempsey: Missed many games early in the season due to injury. Made an impact with some high scoring innings especially his 70 off 43 balls against Kings Langley in Round 10. Didn't get much opportunity with the ball. Talented fieldsman. Represented Parramatta in the Gee Shield as well as U14 NSW Emerging Blues. Chris Slaviero: The third of the new boys to the team. Was our first string wicketkeeper and had a highly successful season with 16 dismissals. A versatile batsman who is just as much at home opening the batting as batting down the order. A popular member of the team who fitted in very well. Matt Gunton: Played a number of useful innings with the highlight being his 19 against Seven Hills following which he came off the field saying, "I didn't know I could drive!" Terrific team player, great sense of humour and usually the main source of entertainment amongst the boys. Andrew Wood: Greatly improved cricketer who worked hard on his game during the off-season. Useful with both bat and ball and performed consistently, the highlight being his 37no against Seven Hills. Made the most of limited opportunities in a strong side. Also a very handy wicketkeeper behind the stumps having taken 3 catches and a stumping.
