The Good, The Ugly & Really Ugly: The season of 2005/06 held so much promise, but failed to deliver at the very end. Coming from B12's and losing in a hard fought semi final with Winston Hills, the youthful boys were promoted to B11's. We had our home ground changed from North Rocks Park to Crestwood Oval thinking that a change in venues might change our fortunes and unfortunately it did. With so much promise having PDCA Cricketer Of The Year in Grant Korny being made available to us week in week out, or so we thought as we lost Grant to B5's for the first game and lost him for a couple of matches after that didn't upset the resolve of our team. Grant's desertion meant that we were in a position to use other resources and that included the brother of Chris Thorndyke (Matt) a handy left arm opening bowler and opening batsmen. Game 1 brought so much promise as it was our first home ground game. Maybe it was too much practice before the game, the toss was lost and we were sent in. At 9-61 off 18.4 overs it was up to the last wicket stand to make a fight., and after 32 overs we were 9-123 with 10 & 11 being 11* & 45*. With so much spirit and spark in their approach, we ended up bowling out Wenty Waratahs for 107 off 19.2 overs. A great win for Baulkham Hills and what would look like such a great season was before us. Matt Thorndyke ended up taking 4-20 off 6 overs which was a very pleasing moment. Unfortunately we didn't see that much of Matt after that as he had commitments with both secondary studies and relaxing time in the Gold Coast. That was our best moment, and maybe we peaked too early as we lost our next couple of games badly which hurt us at the back end of the season. The ugly moment would thus follow with our match against rivals Merrylands Social in Round 4. I have been playing with this club for the last 4 seasons and can guarantee that every game against this side has always been eventful, and I wasn't disappointed. I missed out on the game but managed to be on the sidelines in the second week. Our spirited opening bowler John Young is generally a quiet person, but when push becomes shove, John is never the bloke to take a backward step. With compatriot Brad Boland at John's side and with Merrylands Social being the side they are, it didn't take them much for getting their backs up. An argument thus followed about the placement of scorebooks and scorers. John did not like the positioning of Baulkham Hills scorer, confirmed with Merrylands Social scorer that it was ok to reposition the scorebooks. Merrylands Social's Captain did not like the scorebooks being moved and approached John quite vigorously. To John's credit a backward step was not taken and a heated exchange thus followed. This was the ugly moment in our season but the ugliest was to follow. It was conceded that John Young was the instigator, (the judiciary confirmed that) and awarded John an 18 month sidelined break with Brad to receive a 15 month break. To John's dismay, the appeal committee did not see in his favour and his appeal for a reduced sentence was declined. Brad was fortunate enough to get his sentence reduced but in John's words "What have I done wrong?" were never truly answered. PDCA Cricketer of the Year "Grant Korny" ended up with a career high 148 in a game which our side made over 300 runs. Now for our side to make 300 runs in two innings is quite an achievement, so to do that in one innings was quite remarkable. The innings concluded on the second day as Baulkham Hills declared 8-309. Merrylands Social conceded defeat, being bowled out for 265 (close but not close enough.) Our ugliest moment thus followed with our next match against Parramatta Leagues. This was a vital match and had to be won convincingly and convincingly lost it was. We were bowled out for 63 and were fortunate to bowl out the opposition for 68 on the same day. Our ugliest moment was to follow with being bowled out for 33 on the second day after being 0-8 at stumps on day 1 of our second innings. The duck tie is awarded to the individual who makes the most ducks in the season, and in this game there were 14 ducks in two innings with the opposition contributing to six. We were always noted as a bowling side but having one opening bowler take 8-8 and PDCA Cricketer of the Year make a pair, things were going from bad to worse. Round seven followed where we were able to make good use of John Young who took a spirited 5-32 off 16 overs which left us with a chance of taking outright points. Unfortunately outright points were not achieved but a first innings win we did manage. Round 8 saw Wenty Waratahs take revenge in windy conditions against a weakened Baulkham Hills side. Our number 11 could not produce the same resolve as the first round match and Baulkham Hills were bowled out or 45. 1-5 was the closest we came to winning this game as their number 3 made 40 off 20 balls and the last 20 came off 8 deliveries. Christmas break was fast approaching and we were happy to see the end of 2005 season. The beginning of the 2006 season started the same way 2005 finished with another bad loss in a one day game. The only joy was Ash Jolly's 7-25 against Norwest. We badly needed this effort and were thrilled that we didn't have to chase so many runs at home. We only lost 3 wickets to achieve 59 runs which was pretty good. What was expected to follow was another good win in a one day game, but that did not happen. Again we were bowled out for a low score, a hard fought 44 by our illustrious Captain John Weatherall was the only pleasing thing. Maybe this was the turning point in our season, but unfortunately this did not happen. The next round saw us against Merrylands Social at home. With our strongest side named in the starting 11 with John and Brad sidelined, this was our chance to hammer the nail against this opposition. This did not happen as we had yet another batting collapse and were bowled out for 139. The opposition made our first innings but managed to take quite awhile in getting there as they were 2/61 after day 1 and only needed to make a further79 runs to get there. As slow as the day was only a first innings result could only be made. You could here a pin drop out there in the middle as no words were exchanged on day 1, but day 2 saw a different light as a controversial run out decision just after tea and with Merrylands Social being in an awkward position only needing 6 runs for first innings points. The square leg umpire (opposition umpire as only central was provided) managed to not see his brother being run out by a good metre, confirming that the sun was in his eyes, allowed a not out decision. Another heated exchange followed and after further debate with the Captains, it was noted that the square leg umpire was not going to be replaced. As with all bad things, and with the opposition finding composure, they managed to make the required runs. Yet another disappointing day out there in the middle and with our season ending quite quickly, outright points were desperately required to have a slim chance in a semi final berth. This did not happen as we lost outright again to Parramatta Leagues at home ending our dismal season. A special mention must be made to Marcus Robertson who managed to only miss one game in the season. I thank the team for their hard work in the season and look forward to seeing them on the field in 2006/2007. Yours in Cricket
