Like a 500-1 outsider that bolts out of the stalls early only to be rounded up by the favourites early on, characterises the season the B17 team had. Our first game should have been a sign of a good season ahead but acted as more of an aberration. Quality partnerships, good tight bowling provided the team with a first up win. A bye followed in which we savoured our first win. Going into the third round, expectations were high of another good showing. Again we posted a solid score and went about securing a first innings victory. The turning point of our season came rather early, but in second week of round three, we capitulated against the same attack that we had played so well the week before. With a little over an hour left, the rampaging opposition scored more than 100 runs to secure an outright win. Confidence was destroyed and round 3 was the last time we would gain significant points from a match. There was no doubting we had the talent to score more wins that we ended up accruing but our trouble stemmed from the fact that could not put the same 8-9 core players on the field every week. Captains were constantly having to scour for players and a look at our statistics that during the 12 rounds reveals that 36 players played a game for B17. Sounds like the beleaguered England team of the nineties shuffling in players in a vain attempt to wrestle back the ashes. Week in week out, we would do well in one area and fail abysmally in another area. Take for example a one day match where brilliant bowling on a fine hot sunny day saw our opposition bundled out for 60. When we batted, we could only manage 40 odd runs. Another instance was against the competition leaders where we batted extremely well to post 170 runs and had them struggling at the end of the first day with a few early breakthroughs yet they came back the next week and secured a win quite comfortably. A recurring theme it seemed, the ability to snatch defeat from the claws of victory. While the results were not outstanding, we did have some consistent performers. On the batting front, we had Charuka posting another 300 run season. Without some of his contributions we would have suffered quite a few inglorious outright losses. On the bowling front, Adam Meakins had a strong season. His left arm opening stints often had the batsmen wondering and wandering and despite playing only a handful matches was able to capture 32 wickets. Sacha shared the new bowl with Adam and collected the bowling award by capturing 30 wickets for less than 12 runs a piece. Mick Barton could always be counted on in the field and his dives and hard chasing, saved us many runs. The rest of our fielding effort by and large was exemplary, sure there were dropped catches and the odd recurring case of the ball going through the legs of particular fielder for 4! Another positive to come out the season was seeing the next generation of young men coming through. Our future in the senior ranks look bright as the 'kids' had the opportunity week and week out to play with the adults. Our thanks goes out to the boys that quite often played twice on a Saturday and helped plug the many holes in our roster. A season of mixed fortunes, some outstanding performances without being able to put together more wins. For the most part we all enjoyed ourselves and enjoyed being involved in a mildly competitive and structured set of cricket matches. While the bats are oiled and the bodies are rested, I am sure we are all counting the days until the season comes around once more (2 months to rego!) and we can don the whites(almost whites) and travel the Hills area with the hope of scoring some runs, grabbing some wickets and conjuring up more wins than losses.
